  1. I am so so bummed to miss them in the hometown! Love these guys. I suppose there are worst things than having to be in Norway for work...only consolation
  2. I scooted in for Terra's last song so I could be mistaken but fairly certain ersh was not playing with her.
  3. Not around for any of this but seeing Trampled by turtles tonight in Toronto. Been a few years!
  4. Me too. I was starting to have second thoughts/feel overwhelmed about even going with the start of a busy work term and bringing my son out so late on a school night yada yada. But I was really glad I went. I am definitely a new fan of Sturgil. I thought they had a raunchy rippin country sound with a hint of Elvis perhaps inspired traditionalism woven in there. Great mix of familiar tried and true and pushing things to a new edge. Great band great vocals and great songs. TTB are always a pleasure. I get so much enjoyment out of watching Derek play and Susan just has one of the best vocals of all time. I really enjoyed the flute jams. Kofi is such an asset to that all around talented band. The pipes on the back up singers are incredible. Some of the notes that were being hit...holy shit. And Willie. I thought he put on a great performance. As I get older and increasingly reflective on life and loss and love i appreciate all the more the rare treat to witness a legend like that that has spanned the ages like no other really. Connecting the generations and putting into words so eloquently the sentiments that are hard to express. Brought me to tears a couple times. Was thankful for the wind and dim lights to keep that on the down low. His sister is absolutely age defying on those keys. It's quite remarkable what they are still capable of. He was strong and assured. I was happy and admittedly proud that my ten year old understood what a special thing that was for him to witness.
  5. Particle Kid. Willie's other son's band.
  6. Heading to the show today. The promotion around this show has been a total gong show between fluctuating prices, artists dropping out, promises of more bands, then silently withdrawing that wording, poor communication etc. Nevertheless looking forward to TTB, the legendary presence of Willie and checking out Sturgill for the first time. Been quite a while since I've been to Molson amp/Budweiser stage
  7. The Washboard Music Festival....who knew? I am discovering that Ohio has it all. Apparently there is a precedent of accepting Canadian talent http://washboardmusicfestival.com/# https://www.cbsnews.com/news/washboards-the-laundry-tool-that-is-music-to-the-ears/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab6i&linkId=56334404 Who doesn't love a soulscrub?
  8. True, but we have had incredible luck with securing what has become "Camp Canada" at the back of the camping area. Only ones to keep us up back there really is ourselves jamming around the fire. I have a feeling the crowd varies significantly depending upon which event is being put on. I feel fairly certain I will be back there.
  9. Bwaha. I actually really needed that today. The slow mo freeze frames that are happening on my phone right now make his facial expressions and intensity all the better. Thanks brah!
  10. He's always up to something cool... https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-2018/mickey-hart-alzheimers-awareness.html
  11. Yes I really hope that this is nothing serious or lasting. Love to these boys!!
  12. I ended up having a pretty amazing weekend actually amidst periodic moments of licking our wounds. Thanks Camp Canada and our American hangers-ons. By Friday and in particular Saturday The Ledges was inundated with Curveball refugees and people had a lot of pent up energy to unleash. For those of you who may have forgotten or who haven't had the chance to appreciate Leftover Salmon they are still at it. I thought they brought some cosmic fire. Sweeney from Ekoostik Hookah sat in. He just exudes rock n' roll...the smoke, the slouch, the shag and the rip roaring unique approach to guitar. Was pleased to get the chance to see the Salmon again this summer after only getting to see half their set at Peach Fest so that I could head on over to see Phil & The Terrapin Family Band. Got up early enough for yoga on the beach, followed by a beautiful swim, a well-timed and always thoughtful breakfast sandwich from chef c-towns, another swim, a super restorative and opening round of thai massage, some more day trippin. Just in the zone. So much energy to lap up and radiate out. So many laughs. The Infamous Stringdusters were HOT!! Holy moly do they ever have a talented band. Every member. But dobro and fiddle especially. I hadn't seen them since 2011 at Delfest before they really broke. They were on the rained out side-stage at that time and essentially played to a small crowd in a small circle. I recall them really standing out to Schwa, c-towns and myself at that moment. And sure enough not long after they launched and scaled up significantly. It was a treat to finally get to see them again and they were absolutely loving and appreciating the crowd. They weaved in a bunch of phish covers including Free, Possum....and hmmm memory failing me at the moment but at least 1 or 2 more, in addition to Cumberland Blues, Terrapin tease, etc. and of course their own material. Just an all around great show. Wound down a bit to the super cute and wholesome Bluegrass Sweethearts that I was pleasantly surprised to find out were the parents of Jessica Lea Mayfield and David Mayfield. Jessica I have seen open for the Avett Brothers at a very young age, and David Mayfield whose current band I am less familiar with/drawn to was formerly of Cadillac Sky. I had the privilege of seeing Cadillac Sky years back with Mumford and Sons and without knowing who they were at the time they absolutely blew me away. Their album Letters in the Deep is absolutely fantastic if you can ever get your hands on it... But unfortunately they disbanded not long after which was a real surprise and shame given their talent and unique sound. Anyhow I digress... Met some wonderful people, many of whom had traveled from the other side of the country for phish and luckily stumbled upon the sheer gem that is Nelson Ledges. We (The Blurry Pickers) had played there just a couple weeks prior, opening for John Kadlecik band which included Jay Lane on drums, keyboard player from Disco Biscuits and Wavy Dave (banjo player from Cornmeal) on the bass. That was also a fantastic weekend that I never did get around to posting around...but point is, you've got to get yourselves to the Ledges. Was hoping my post would have hooked a couple of you folks into making the trek over, but glad to hear it sounded like you fared well in your own adaptive capacities. It was a shocking jolt to have such a build up to the magic of phish, their music, and the collective energy of tens of thousands of people ripped out from under us. It really was something to grieve, but maybe something is gained from shaking things up and forcing people to change their trails and encounters and all that. Who knows... ended up feeling grateful that weekend thanks to good people, a great magical quartz infused venue and some kick-ass jamgrass bands. Sooooo happy we didn't just go home or I may have had one bitter rant to share instead. I sure hope we get another pitch thrown at us next year though...here's hoping
  13. Happy bday daveyboy!! Well a lot of people will surely remember this day.
  14. Yes this was a gut winding blow. Hard to accept. We found out just as we were crossing the border. Could have been way worse. About 10 of us diverted to Nelson Ledges in Garretsville Ohio. One of the most beautiful venues I've ever been to with big trees and amazing swimming and Sandy beach. Leftover salmon plays tonight and infamous stringdusters are tomorrow night. So there's that. But ya. Tough pill to swallow. Hearts out to those who ended up sleeping in a ditch or equivalent. Curveball alright
  15. Whole new album I believe the official release date is the 17th
  16. Not much chatter about this as of late... I imagine some are leaving today. We are getting on the road tomorrow. In addition to the music I look forward to festival yoga...always extra special energy, resets my scrambled mind straight and a relief from all the walking (which I actually didn't find too bad...most festivals I go to involve mountainous terrain so this is flat and easy by comparison and beats walking through the craze and congestion of the streets of Toronto that I do all the time without a second thought). I am supremely jealous of anyone who ends up under some trees though. Hope to see many of you and safe travels!
  17. Hey ya, I was there. I thought they put on a fantastic show. I was a more than a little worried about the opportunity for proper CRB collective vibe given the size of the tent and the rule of no standing anywhere under it...that was a little deflating and over the top when you bring in a band like that. Yet they just did what they do, and the pocket of folk that I was in was successful in disrupting the rules and were able to get our groove on....security eventually gave up and just rolled with it. Helped that Chris himself was encouraging people to remember that it was Saturday night and people should feel free to get up and dance. I was pleasantly satisfied with the length of set given it was a festival timeslot and a free show at that! I also found it a little odd that they didn't do an encore as there seemed to be 10 minutes left. I heard some grumbles that there were more people there than what was expected so cops/security wanted to start clearing the place out. But who knows... Very few bands consistently have me walking away with the level of feeling that I have every single time I see them. Can't wait for fall tour

    Grateful

Don't really have the words today on this 23rd anniversary. Feeling it more than ever for some reason. When the last rose of summer pricks my finger, And the hot sun chills me to the bone, When I can't hear the song for the singer, And I can't tell my pillow from a stone, I will walk alone by the black muddy river, And sing me a song of my own, I will walk alone by the black muddy river, And sing me a song of my own. When the last bolt of sunshine hits the mountain, And the stars start to splatter in the sky, When the moon hits the southwest horizon, With the scream of an eagle on the fly, I will walk alone by the black muddy river, And listen to the ripples as they moan, I will walk alone by the black muddy river, And sing me a song of my own. Black muddy river, roll on forever, I don't care how deep or wide, if you've got another side, Roll muddy river, roll muddy river, black muddy river, roll. When it seems like the night will last forever, And there's nothing left to do but count the years, When the strings of my heart begin to sever, And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears, I will walk alone, by the black muddy river, And dream me a dream of my own, I will walk alone, by the black muddy river, And sing me a song of my own, sing me a song of my own.
  19. Aww well hard to follow that brotherly love but I certainly remain grateful for the little forum that could. Happiest of circles around the Sun and thanks for keeping this alive.
  20. Along that vein, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood are playing for free next Sat. Aug. 11th in Kitchener at their Blues fest. So at least I get a little taste of Neal and Adam that way. First time CRB has come to Canada...actually scratch that I think they played New Brunswick a couple years ago.
