  1. And the next night Budos Band is at the Red Room. a 2 night funky run!!!
  2. Yet another reason to polish product, folks! The few tracks on the MySpace page sound great! I'm glad you're working the dream, Shain.
  3. I'd suggest that you actually go to blockbuster to find it. It's not a rare movie. I saw it about 3 times on the Movie Network after seeing it elsewhere on TV. It's an accessible introduction to quantum physics. The only new ideas I had found in that movie were the water crystal exercise, the '2 places at once' and the approaches to these topics. I am by no means a quantum physics geek (kinda wish i were...heady shit) but none of these topics were very heavy on my sensibilities as they weren't new to me. I agree - cheesy production, but since there needs to be plot and CGI to keep most peoples' attentions nowadays it was entirely important even on a lower budget.
  4. I spell it with a 'Y' So - Robby New Boldy? If we find a Boldy then it could be a fitting phrase
  5. I had asked if anybody knew, not how to get to find it myself, nor did I ask anyone to research for me - but again, I appreciate the legwork.
  6. Defined by what kind of computer you have? I find there's a difference between users and it's likely more akin to logic and the way one interacts with thoughts much like different languages or the creative processes in the arts. is geography more important than english? This whole deal is silly - especially when i always see the PC users fighting about how crappy macs are instead of mac owners wishing they could be heavy gmers.
  7. it wasn't hub. Hub is 100% recognizable - like questlove is a unique looking dude. Hub looks like he could dish out some heavy shit on someone done rub him wrong. hub isn't tall and skinny and generally plays a black jazz bass with a maple neck. It was a smug looking skinny dreaddy with a sunburst P-Bass. Phat. nobody?
  8. wolfmother v. rose hill drive - I'd presume that it's because the tracks on their website sound thin. I was making music of my own on saturday. glad you had a good time.
  9. tabbed browsing is th way to go momack. it's easier and faster than having multiple instances of the same program
  10. I can only imagine that they're having an absolute blast!
  11. Iran - Far Away I am continually amused by these 'international issues' are distracting us from focusing on our own country. Definitely interesting but also a distraction. Other than to make up my mind how I vote or shop, it's always the same old crap. Sorry guys, but how is this any different than any other large scale war for profit?
  12. very cool. too many restrictions for me. cool band. rock is back?
  13. I hope the bar/radio station will create a discerning audience rather than merely cater to an easily consuming one. Loads of potential to put Ottawa on the map for something other than being a capital city or having the world's longest (potential, now) skating rink.
  14. Hey Ross - If you check this board semi-regularly then it looks like I'll get an email from you. I'd like to have a chance for 2 for 1 tickets if I want to go Dick's on Sunday. What's the story with RHD?? do you have one?
  15. Dima - i said 'neat' Halloween was a great party. that youtube video was a bit different than i remember him live. perhaps he was a bit shy.
  16. Opened the Pnuma trio Halloween show at the fairview. very neat. somebody should get on the same bill and have him guest.
  17. why not get a carload of crazy fuckers to go to London? I'm sure you could find a sofa to crash on.
  18. I don't disagree but I'm sort of an idealist. The issue with the $20 American band is often times a more established act than our Canadian acts. Why else would they come to Canada? I'm generally impressed more often than not when I go for a bigger ticket. When I go out on a limb for a smaller act it doesn't always live up to the bigger show. Now, that being said, if I were on the fence about going to a show at the fairview I'd stay home for a show that was $15 cover. If It were just another night out compared to a show that I'd be planning to see that would be the dealbreaker. I am absolutely aware of the fact that few venues/bars are even nice to the musicians. I don't know of any bars that will work a door/bar deal or even like working with guarantees.
  19. Okay...so here are some more. It's definitely more 'indie' as I got this from Stillepost but at least they're doin' it. Some of these bands are fucking awesome. You Say Party, We Say Die! are super energetic and Geoff Berner is a bit shocking (and a great accordion player). Check it out. 21. Some news about Vancouver's RedEye "They have scored an opening slot for G Love and Special Sauce for 19 dates all through the US and A. Gabe (from Redeye) has known G Love for a little while and worked some magic to make it happen" So there's some great news for some Local Boys!!! What else is happening for Vancouver music? Who else are some real contenders? Hey Ocean? Sekoya/1LUV? Motion Soundtrack? Kinnie Starr? Zubot and Dawson? Fond of Tigers? Baked Potato? Mother? Five Alarm Funk? Threat from Outer Space? Green Room? FreeFlow? Jackfruit? Parlour Steps? Go Ghetto Tiger? I'm sure I'm missing a lot of great Vancouver acts. This town is full of great players trying to keep busy and I hope that if you'll add to this list.
  22. Well, Deeps you are right from one perspective. Another perspective is that more bars should allot a budget for paying entertainment and pay the guarantee out of the till, and split cover and pay out a percentage of bar profits to the entertainment. Want to play canned music? pay SOCAN fees with a sliding scale based on attendance and bar sales. Want to show PPV? do it. Want a Jukebox? do it. I want to keep seeing great bands in my town but I still think that the climate should actually keep entertainers warm rather than have to rely on cover to pay the acts. Cover should really only have to be charged for promoted events and I didn't even see much action on the messageboards, let alone postering. The bar did their regular calendar flyer but unless it was flyered in other neighbourhoods around East Van and by the University, downtown was sadly missed. I'm not JUST a cheap dick that likes to complain about everything. If you look back I did comment about fair pay and the fact that I wasn't drinking much. Personally, I'd like to see more local action getting to a point where fans and the local media actually make live entertainment a stronger force in Vancouver. Travelling bands are great but they don't really reflect well on Vancouver. Most of the acts that I want to see plan their tours for a mid-week show and play California on the weekend cause the NorthWest is very sleepy. I would like to thank JSB and Jackfruit for starting my weekend off right and cramming the dancefloor, bar, and seating. great turnout for a fantastic party.
  23. It was a solid JSB show but I was strangely uninterested in the dancefloor but did manage to catch up with some friends and hear some flawless playing. incredible. As for Jackfruit, they stole the show. A bit sad when the opener is more impressive than the headliner, but it was for a different reason than I am generally impressed by JSB so 'upstaged' is definitely not something that is going to be said and I'm not really sad, nor should anyone else be for that matter. $12 for cover was a bit excessive but I wasn't drinking much and these bands deserve to be paid fairly. They were great.
  24. Make it out to the Fairview Pub on Broadway (at willow) for a hot night out! www.thejimmyswiftband.com
  25. they're great. and very loud. be prepared.
