  4. Hi Dustin, Thanks for joining this group and for posting some more info about the show. When I was in Welland last weekend visiting family over the Easter holiday, I came across the article about the show in the Welland Tribune newspaper. I didn't recognize the names of any of the players but I figured some people on this board probably would, and others might be interested in attending. Sure enough, in addition to the replies above, I also got an email from a friend who is going (along with some other friends). Nice! I wish I could check it out, but no such luck ... just too busy with other things this upcoming weekend. Good luck with this event; it looks like it's going to be an excellent one. Peace, Mark
  5. Happy birthday to both of you! I hope that you had a great day yesterday and that it continues today. And tomorrow. And the day after. And ... Peace, Mark
  6. I'm in the Niagara Region today and came across an article about this event in the local paper. Does anybody on this board know about this event? Is anybody going? It looks like a cool event. Peace, Mark ---------- Inspired by '73 Niagara musicians to re-create legendary concert which featured The Dead, The Band and the Allmans Posted By HANS NIEDERMAIR, SPECIAL TO THE STANDARD A group of Niagara musicians will be bringing out the Dead next weekend. And the Allman Brothers and The Band. Between Two Lakes, a collaboration of 15 Niagara-based musicians, plus a few special guests, will recreate Spring Jam '73, an outdoor concert held before 600,000 people in Watkins Glen, N.Y., that featured the trio of iconic, now classic rock groups. The show will be held over two nights at Robertson Hall in St. Catharines, with proceeds going to Canadian Red Cross efforts to provide disaster relief in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Kristie Robertson, who will provide the backing vocals during the Grateful Dead set, said most of the musicians in the group have about 15 years of experience playing gigs in Niagara. "Between Two Lakes is a musicians' collaborative founded four years ago with the intention of gathering local singer and songwriter talent to showcase their material," she said. Robertson said every performer in the show -- who range in age from their 20s to their 50s -- has been showcased at Between Two Lakes music nights at The Office in downtown St. Catharines, which take place about once a month on Th ursdays. "Everyone has been performing locally and we know each other from gigs we've played together in various bands," she said. "Dustin Mater, a co-organizer, knows each musician personally," added Ron Hoover, who will play lead guitar for the Allman Brothers set. "He seems to know everybody. He's the six degrees of separation guy." In organizing "Spring Jam '10," Robertson said the musicians were "inspired by what they were able to put together" after performing The Band's concert film, The Last Waltz, last August at Club LaSalle. "It caught everybody by surprise, the zeitgeist it had," added Hoover. "It went off so well that everyone said, 'What a shame it would be to leave it at that.' " Advertisement The group decided recreating Spring Jam '73 would be a logical follow-up because much like The Last Waltz, the original show featured a "collaborative spirit." "If you were going to choose a theme to build on that, Spring Jam would be as good as any," Hoover said. "A selling point for me was the chance to play this sort of music. I've played some of these songs before, but this is a chance to sit down and dissect it and really learn it." "There's a musical inspiration of this sort of music," added Robertson. "These three bands were so inspirational to music today." Like their rendition of The Last Waltz, Between Two Lakes won't play the songs note by note, Hoover said. "(The Last Waltz) was more interpretive," he said. "There was an effort to be faithful to the spirit, but it wasn't like Classic Albums Live, where everything is nuanced and every note replicated." While there are no recordings of the original Spring Jam, Robertson said the group will attempt to capture the mood and pacing of the 1973 show. "We looked at the original set list and stayed as close to it as possible. We listened to the bands' recordings from those times to learn the songs in the style they were playing them then." Shortly after plans for Spring Jam '10 were set in motion, Haiti was struck Jan. 12 by a magnitude 7 earthquake that left more than 200,000 people dead, 300,000 injured and about a million homeless. "At the time the show was being organized, a week later, the disaster happened," Robertson said. "Everyone involved in the show is passionate about community awareness and we've done other events to support Red Cross efforts, such as Shelter from the Storm." "A lot of us don't have the money to dedicate to the cause, but we thought we could provide the time and effort," added Angela Greer, one of the event's organizers. "I'm feeling pretty solid with the ticket sales so far." Greer said the show will feature two sets each night. The Band and Grateful Dead sets will be performed Friday night, following a musical prelude by violinist Beth Bartley and guitarist Mark Clifford. The Allman Brothers set and a jam session will hit the stage on Saturday evening. The Grateful Dead set will feature the show's musical director, Aidan Miller, on keyboard, bassist Chris Diraddo, Damien Smith and Nick Osczypko on drums, James Moore on lead guitar, Jesse Crawford on lead vocals and guitar, and Robertson on backing vocals. Miller, Smith and Crawford will return for The Band set, which includes Jake Zapotoczny on organ, lead guitarist Scott Sockovie, Tom Nemes on bass, and guest appearances by Kerri Michalica and Jesse Stull. Smith, Diraddo and Miller will also be featured in the Allman Brothers set with the keyboardist providing lead vocals, Hoover on lead guitar, Tim Mosley on guitar, and Ethan Mosley adding a second set of drums. Robertson said there is "definitely more to come" regarding shows in this spirit from the group. "We'll base it on the success of this one and it'll probably be inspired by another classic rock show," she said. - - - WHAT:Spring Jam '10. 7. Nice!!! The lineup looks sweet ... the best lineup that this festival has seen in ages, imho. Peace, Mark
  8. Great news! Congratulations to you both Margaret and Shane. Peace, Mark
  9. I wish I could be there, as I don't get to see or hear Dr. Evil nearly as much as I would like to. I wish Ottawa was 5 hours and 36 minutes closer. Peace, Mark
  10. Thanks buddy! I'll be there in spirit. Make sure that you pull out a few of your Tonin dance moves ... roll down some windows for me! Happy birthday to you Keri! And happy birthday to you Carrie! Peace, Mark
  11. Here's a recent one that made it into class for discussion: Lindsay Lohan sues eTrade over commercial featuring Oakville toddler By Reuters, The Windsor Star March 11, 2010 NEW YORK — Actress Lindsay Lohan has sued eTrade Financial Corp for US$100 million, saying a "milkaholic" baby girl who appeared in a recent commercial featuring a toddler from Oakville was modeled after her. Lohan alleges that the online brokerage's use in the ad of the girl, also named Lindsay, improperly invoked her "likeness, name, characterization, and personality" without permission, violating her right of privacy. In her lawsuit filed Monday in New York, the 23-year-old actress seeks $50 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in exemplary damages. She also demands that eTrade stop running the ad and turn over all copies to her. Lohan's lawyer Stephanie Ovadia did not return requests for a comment but has suggested the name Lindsay is unique in the same manner as Oprah or Madonna. An eTrade spokeswoman declined to comment, saying the New York-based company had not reviewed the complaint. The ad was shown during the Feb. 7 Super Bowl, which, according to Nielsen media, drew about 106.5 million American viewers, a record for a U.S. television program. It is part of a series of ads featuring babies who play the markets. In the ad, a baby boy — played by McAllister Kerr from Oakville — apologizes to his girlfriend through a video chat for not calling her the night before because he was on eTrade. The camera switches to the girl, who asks suspiciously: "And that milkaholic Lindsay wasn't over?" It then switches back to the boy, who uneasily replies "Lindsay?" before another baby girl, presumably Lindsay, moves into the frame and asks, "Milk-a-what?" Lohan was ordered in 2007 to serve one day in jail, undergo an alcohol education program and spend three years on probation after admitting to drunk driving and cocaine possession. "It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs," she said in a statement at the time. Various problems have made the onetime child star in Disney movies a staple of Hollywood gossip pages and the paparazzi. A spokesman for Grey Group, which the New York Post said produced the eTrade ad, told the newspaper the "Lindsay" in the ad was named after a member of its account team. "Lindsay" was in 2008 the 380th most popular name for newborn American girls, according to the U.S. Social Security Administration. That was down from 241 in 2004, when Lohan's popular film "Mean Girls" was released. Link
  12. Wish I was in town for this, but I still haven't figured out a way to be in two desirable places at once! Have a blast folks! Peace, Mark
  13. In the bus case from above, suppose the facts end up showing: 1. the bus that was in the accident hadn't been properly maintained and its brakes were faulty, and 2. experts agree that if the bus had been properly maintained the accident wouldn't have happened because the bus driver would have been able to stop in time to prevent the accident. Should the bus company be responsible for covering any of the damages? I say yes. Having said that, lawsuits without merit do happen, and it pisses me off when people talk about suing to rectify a situation brought on by their own stupid behaviour. As a teacher, I sometimes shake my head at the things I have to do to legally cover myself in case a student gets hurt. As a music promoter and party host, I sometimes worry about what will happen if a person gets hurt at a party I am hosting. I think to myself "take responsibility for your own actions if you act like a fool." But the reality is that when people get hurt they and/or their loved ones want justice (and money is one way of getting some form of justice), and they want/need money to deal with the financial reality of the situation that they are now in (e.g. looking after somebody who needs lots of care). OK, time to think happy thoughts. Peace, Mark
  14. An interesting thread, especially for me given that we have been talking about some of these issues in my classes over the last few days. So true, and in civil law, this becomes very apparent when a number of different parties are determined to be partially at fault. Here is a link to a case which illustrates the point: link to article Peace, Mark
  15. I may still end up at the All Good Fest, but wanted to make sure I had a ticket in hand for the Artpark show in case I can't make it to the festival. I'm thinking the Artpark show will sell out. Peace, Mark
  16. Deeps, nice to read that things worked out well for you with this gig. Peace, Mark
  17. Thanks for the review ReDD. Your comment about the band's playing demanding the listener's attention makes a lot of sense to me. Peace, Mark
  18. Thanks for the clarification Kev, as I thought the Artpark venue was fairly small. Thank you mousepad for grabbing me a ticket for the show. Peace, Mark
  19. Exciting news, although this guy won't be able to make the journey down the 401 for these shows. Are there any other shows in the works, or is this it (for now)? Peace, Mark
  20. Thanks for that Todd ... what a great read ... it made me shiver with emotion. Peace, Mark
  21. Yes, that's what I'm thinking as well. I look forward to hearing from Velvet about it. Peace, Mark
  22. Wow, lots of great music happening this Thursday, with this show, the Sister Euclid show, Umphrey's in Buffalo, the United Steelworkers in Hamilton, etc. I heard about this band a while ago on CBC radio and and at the time I remember thinking that I'd love to check them out if and when they were in the area. Unfortunately, I won't be hitting up this show or any of the others mentioned above, as there is a major arts production happening at my school that I am involved with. Enjoy KevO, and let us know what you think of this show. Peace, Mark
  23. Wow, there is going to be an incredible amount of energy in the arena for that show! Off the charts I am sure. I'm curious how the energy and noise level will compare to the first reunion Phish show you were at in Virginia. Peace, Mark
  24. Ditto on the Rochester Highland Bowl venue ... I really enjoyed Phil Lesh / Levon Helm show there a couple of summers ago. Having said that, I won't be able to make it to Rochester for this show, as the timing doesn't work. Artpark is definitely possible though! Peace, Mark
  25. Hey Chris Steve - it is a decent article, that's for sure. I hope to make it to the Boathouse tomorrow night to check it out, but I have a school-event that I am a part of tomorrow evening so I will have to see how much gas is left in the tank after that. Do you know what time you will be on? Is there an opening band? Peace, Mark
