Country music legend Willie Nelson was arrested for possession of marijuana Friday after a U.S. Border Patrol official smelled a suspicious odor on his tour bus during a routine stop. Traveling from California to his ranch near Austin, Nelson's bus was pulled over at a checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas, around 85 miles west of El Paso, when the officer found six ounces of pot. Nelson said it was his, according to reports. (Maybe he thought he was still in California, where marijuana for medical purposes is legal.) The 77-year-old singer was detained briefly along with three others. He was released after paying a $2,500 bond. Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West told the El Paso Times that Nelson could get 180 days in county jail (this is Texas, after all). "If he does, I'm going to make him cook and clean. He can wear the stripy uniforms just like the other ones do," West said. It is not the first drug-related brush with the law for Nelson, who is co-chair of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) advisory board, and has worked for years for marijuana legalization.
