  4. Write to the manufacturer: tell them how if they went to a different packaging scheme (e.g., a small plastic bag with a folded bit of cardboard stapled to the top of it) it would not only be more environemtnally friendly, but would actually save the manufacturer money (not just on the packaging materials for the items themselves, but on how much volume and weight they ship, along with the amount of time and effort it takes to put it all together) and increase their margins. If you could find a competitor's product that was packaged better, and point it out to them, so much the better. Aloha, Brad

    WHISKY!!

Recommendation seconded. Thanks, Schwa. This stuff is really nice, with a kind of sharp (peppery?) taste to it, and it imparts a really warm glow when you drink it. Aloha, Brad
  7. My main guitar is an Ibanez Roadstar II, as near as I can tell the same as this one: I like it a lot, especially the feel of it, but there's one thing that bugs me about it: the bridge. It's a vibrato bridge (but not a locking type, like a Floyd Rose), which I don't need or want, and changing the strings on it is a pain (requiring the removal of a little plug that holds the string down, then threading the string under and through fiddly little metal bits, and so on); further, I'm sure the bridge needs a bit of work. Would it be possible to completely re-vamp the bridge on it? I'm thinking about having the hole on the back where the springs go filled in with wood, and then install either a Gibson-style top-of-the-body bridge and tailpiece, or have it rigged for stringing through the body, like a Telecaster. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone doing this kind of thing, so I don't know how risky it'd be (especially to the feel of the guitar). Is this a really bad idea, or is it worth persuing? Aloha, Brad
  8. It's being shown on Bravo! tonight (Saturday) at 8pm. Aloha, Brad

    Happy Easter

From http://christiancadre.blogspot.com/2007/04/why-is-it-called-good-friday.html (which I found in yet another Google search) I think it's called Good Friday because of the bunnies. Any day that features bunnies must surely qualify as "good." Aloha, Brad
  12. I found one for the third of the three shows: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=523853 This recording is now available at the Live Music Archive: http://www.archive.org/details/dead2009-03-30.roseland.mc930.muletaper.flac16 (The Dead recently approved LMA uploads, except for soundboard sources, matrices, etc.) Aloha, Brad
  13. The line-up for this year's Westfest, which runs from June 12 to 14 in Ottawa's Westboro neighbourhood, was announced today. The main names that caught my attention were The Acorn, who play on Sunday, June 14, from 9:45pm to 11:00pm, and Ladies Of The Canyon who play on Saturday, June 13, from 7:15pm to 8:15pm. Aloha, Brad

  19. I entered a bunch of dates for Urban Preacher in the Toronto calendar today, including what looks like a Wednesday residency at Cadillac Lounge in June, and if people have the chance, I strongly recommend seeing them. I'd call them a soul/funk band, and they remind me quite a bit of Hiway Freeker: female singer (who can belt it out), great backing band (the guitar player lays it down solidly, then busts out mind-bending stuff at the drop of a hat), and truly engaging fun music. They also have a single horn in the frontline, a baritone sax, which you don't often see outside of a multi-instrument horn section, and it really adds to the soul feel (they played at The Rainbow Bistro in Ottawa last Wednesday, and did a great rendition of Artha Franklin's "Think"). They have a promo video available here. (Aside from the residency, they also have a couple of other upcoming dates in Toronto, and one in Waterloo, which I entered into the SoOn calendar.) Aloha, Brad
  20. Great report, Booche. I saw him at the Civic Centre back in 2006, and it was a blast, end to end. That was one was co-composed by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. Aloha, Brad
  21. There was a report that Brubeck had to cancel an April 3 festival appearance due to ill health (a viral infection). Here's hoping he gets better, and is able to get to Toronto. Aloha, Brad
  22. And given that Booker T. Jones is also on the schedule, and that Booker and DBT recently did a record as well as some shows together, I can't see them not collaborating during the festival. Aloha, Brad
