  1. Infinite Sadness blows. Of all the reunion options this is the least interesting for me. It almost makes me angry.
  2. I am grabbing this on Oink as I don't have the CD anymore. I heard Karate Man the other day and rocked the fuck out by myself.
  3. I saw Sloan with Jale opening in Grade 9 and I think that was my first "I'm cool" concert. Like blane though after OCTA I stopped paying attention for a while. I still like them but don't put on the albums much. Do you know who I do miss though? The Superfriendz.
  4. The next article about Israeli soldiers protesting the actions of the state does indeed give more meat to what Joel may have been saying. His piece is an editorial so the presentation of facts is secondary to his analogy though if he had some better ones it might be more believable. Strictly speaking you gotta hand it to Hitler for being a shrewd military strategist, and perhaps some the techniques used by Israel are in fact the same though you can't use Israel exclusively as an example. You'd look at the Iran/Iraq conflict, Serbs and Croats, Kosovo, Armenia and so on. So really were these strategies the sole property of the Nazis or is just that referncing Nazism is provocative enough to read this? While not making apologies for or defending Israel's actions I think their strategy was at first largely reactionary and is now an offensive one due to lack of options to negotiate, inadequate and completely corrupted palestinian governance and nearly as many corruption scandals on the Israeli side. Pro-Israel camps contain Zionist threads about arabs being dirt, fostering a culture of terror and wanting only the destruction of Israel but the economic disparity of Palesitnians (whatever the cause) is what encourages that. I don't think it's up to Israel to feed the Palestinian poor, it IS up to them to create options for self-sufficiency and to, where it's not a threat to their safety, stop fucking bombing things, people, farms, shops, power plants and essential services so that the majority of peace-loving and commerce-focused people can get on running shops and sending kids to school. I ask hard questions about both sides of the coin here; is Israel still, 60 years on, acting in self-defence? What options would I have, as Israel's PM, knowing that there's a culture of hate against my citizens that comes from elements of our palestinian neighbours but even larger elements from all of the countries that surround us? Remember also, and I'll put this as delicately as possible, there is a whole whack of crazies who have fucked everything up. Rabin and Arafat came very close in 1993, Rabin I think even formally recognized the PLO as a political party. Then an orthodox Jew killed him and presumably people who thought Arafat was a spineless traitor TRIED to kill him. Then there was Netanyahu who effectively reversed course on any negotiations. Then there was Barak, who with Arafat and Clinton again came close in 2000. According to Wikipedia that deal would've given them the majority of the West Bank and the gaza strip, partof East Jerusalem, and involved annexing 69 Israeli settlements that blocked major roads and throughways in the proposed palestinian state. Arafat not only refused, he didn't even make a counter-offer. Members of his own party quit the PLO over it because why on earth wouldn't they take it? Then Sharon was elected and confined Arafat like an animal to his own headquarters which, not coinicidentally, were intermittently bombed. To say resolving this is not easy is a massive understatement. Everything you think you know always goes out the window. How could Sharon on one hand be tried for War Crimes for indirectly resulting in the deaths of thousands of refuges during the Shatila Massacre, be the same man who later evicted Jewish settlers from contested areas and began withdrawing troops from the Gaza strip? The same man whose son is charged with corruption? The same man who begain constructing a physical barrier between Israel and the West Bank? I truly believe that Israel wants Peace but will only have it when security isn't a threat. I also believe Palestinians wan Peace but only when security isn't a threat. That doesn't move anyone any closer to Peace at the moment.
  5. Yeah ok well I haven't seen their reunion shows. I loved them too much in about Grade 9 when I was pretending to hate everything and everyone and "only live for the music man"
  6. That was an expected response. Chretien's English sounds like beautiful prose next to Dion's. AND Chretien had facial paralysis to contend with! Chretien's charisma also made his Frenglish easier to understand/absorb.
  7. Afro Poppa I think you should just delete your own posts and re-submit them after taking the maybe 10 minutes needed to read this. Dr.Evil you've made a good assessment that happens to mirror my feelings on this subject. The lastmost paragraphs seem to make sense and are probably what he was trying to get at:
  8. Shut up you, I would take any incarnation of Eric's Trip and I wouldn't criticize or complain about anything they did.
  9. The piece in last Saturday's Globe and Mail was insightful and I feel a bit more reassured. But as trite as it would seem to say it I think his Frenglish is a major stumbling block in securing the PM role.
  10. Make them with halibut and catch de taste! Catfish is good too because it's firm and can be marinated in something non-acidic for several hours without disintegrating. I love fish tacos so much, yet everyone I suggest it to thinks it's a disgusting option. Mike you should use your deep fryer to make fish tacos (since the fish pieces are usually deep fried). Marinate the pieces in buttermilk then flour and deep fry them.
  11. I made a Jack Spade lookalike man purse with the amount they gave me. If you work in weights I'd say 3 kilos, if in dimensions I'd say 8 feet by 9 feet of salmon skin. All from the same fish. Rough workday over here!
  12. Seconded (thirded?). Even if you question their roots on the ground and in development overall they're a very positive organization.
  13. LaPointe's will not charge you for a piece of salmon skin by the way, if you want to make a salmon skin roll which happens to be one of my favorites.
  14. I've had luck (and NOT gotten food poisoning) with Fish from LaPointe's for Tuna, Toro (Salmon Belly) , smoked eel and different kinds of roe. At Kowloon you can get the generic red roe in a little container for cheap. Frozen fish, roe and Edamame are all available from the store next to Suisha Gardens. I'm pretty sure there are other suppliers such as the Pelican fish market near the Bank St. Farm Boy who may carry it but I've never investigated. Kowloon has an astounding selection of interesting fish but I don't know I'd want to eat it raw as their hygiene practices are....how you say...different. Have you guys checked out www.ottawafoodies.com? It's new, and while the interface is a bit confusing at first it is ideal for answering questions such as "where do I find XXX".
  15. I am immmensely impressed with the Coachella lineup but realistically how many acts per day can I expect to catch? Something of this scale is going to require major sacrifices somehow. In any case it might be time to call up my cousin in LA and book some couch space. Adam
  16. Your mix reminds me how much I loved Konono No.1 at Bluesfest last year. I was awestruck by them
  17. I currently have "flu-like symptoms' from getting the flu vaccine yesterday. On a related subject because of international work travel I have had almost every vaccine available to Canadian individuals. My favorite was the Japanese Encephalitis. My least favorite was Typhoid because it was big and it hurt my arm.
  18. Great stuff Kev thanks alot. 21 is a bit too much dub for my taste but all three are on Katie's Ipod and she approves

    iEverything

I have never been a Mac user, and I used to laugh at them. Now I can't stop drooling. But for every one of me there's presumably someone who thinks this is all a big marketing ploy, and that Apple gear (be it the iMac, the MacBook, the iPhone, the iPod, the iTV, iTunes, etc) is an overpriced, but nicer-looking box of the same parts that can be had on a windows platform. So are you with it or against it?
  20. Say it loud...still under a shroud!

    Prostate exams

I had one while 3 female japanese residents were doing their training at the clinic. It was unnerving. I'm under 30 but my Doc said it was worth ASKING your family doctor to take a look anyway during your exam. It can happen at a younger age than what they usually quote. "Looks like we're almost done here Adam" "Great, thanks. But if you have a few minutes would you mind fingering my ass?"
  22. I want to get one or all of these things and nerd out in my basement with them.

    Ireland

One thing you MUST MUST MUST do is go to the Aran Islands. Go to Galway first then take the ferry from there. I enjoyed Galway alot even with all the hype. Take the ferry out to the Aran Islands and stay at the hostel that's NOT in town, the one that's a short walk out. Their food was outstanding and a completely hidden surprise. Belfast was really fun, The music is great and so is the food. I did the black taxi tour as most do and it's probably wirth it now as rumour has it the murals are being painted over. Ireland is small and very drivable. I would spend some time in Donegal as it's probably the closest thing to rural Irish life you can get. It's calm and peaceful and there's lots of sheep to laugh at Skip Limerick. It's called stab city, so there's that to deal with, and even beyond the grittiness I didn't really see much to it. Same with Letterkenny. Surprise Surprise...Dublin has excellent pubs. Temple Bar is touristy but you'll still ind some fun ones. I can't remember the name of it but there's a microbrewery in Temple Bar (The Porter House I think) that is great. The best pint of Guiness in the entire country comes not from the guiness factory. It comes from the Palace Bar, Dublin 2 (21 Fleet Street). You're gonna love it in there. I would encourage you to walk North from the city and into Dublin 7. It's supposedly rough but I didn't think so and I lived there with no problems. Go to the Cobblestone Bar on North King St (near Smithfield market). It's dark and sketchy and it was firebombed during the height of the Troubles. There's celtic music every Sunday afternoon and if you think you hate celtic music across the board you haven't heard it at Cobblestone's.
