TheGoodRev
"You've got to be crazy"Get it straight, buddy, that song is called Dogs, from the greatest album Pink Floyd ever released, Animals. If you've ever seen Roger Waters' "Live In The Flesh" DVD from his 2000 tour, the two lead guitar players are Doyle Bramhall II and Snowy White. Andy Fairwhether Low plays rhythm and also bass when Roger picks up the acoustic.

MarcO
Snowy White began his tenure as an ancillary player with Floyd on the 1977 Animals tour and also was part of the "surrogate band" that played alongside PF during the Wall shows in 80/81."You've got to be crazy"Get it straight' date=' buddy, that song is called Dogs, from the greatest album Pink Floyd ever released, Animals. If you've ever seen Roger Waters' "Live In The Flesh" DVD from his 2000 tour, the two lead guitar players are Doyle Bramhall II and Snowy White. Obviously, only "Shine On" made it (split in half)to the final product; "Have A Cigar", "WYWH" and "Welcome to the Machine" were worked up in the studio to complete the album. In 1976 they begna work on what would become "Animals" and both the remaining "new" songs were drastically re-written and given new lyrics: ergo, "Dogs" and "Sheep".YOU GOTTA BE CRAZYPink Floyd 1974Music and lyrics: Waters and Gilmour You gotta be crazy, you gotta be meanYou gotta keep your kids and your car cleanYou gotta keep climbing, you gotta keep fitYou gotta keep smiling, you gotta eat shitYou gotta be small to be a big shotYou gotta eat meat to stay at the topYou gotta be trusted, gotta tell liesYou gotta be able to narrow your eyesYou gotta beleive they've gotta beleive youYou gotta appear easy to see throughGotta be sure you look good on the TVGotta resemble a human being You gotta keep one eye over your shoulderGonna get harder as you get olderGotta fly south and hide in the sandGotta forget that you're gonna get cancer And when you loose controlYou'll reap the harvest you have sownAnd as the fear growsThe bad blood slows and turns to stone And it's too late to loose the weightYou used to need to throw aroundSo have a good drownAs you go downAloneDragged down by the stone Gotta be sure, you gotta be quickGotta divide the tame from the sickGotta keep some of us docile and fitYou gotta keep everyone burying this shit You gotta get you started earlyProcessed by the time you're thirtyWork like fuck 'till you're sixty fiveAnd then your time's your own until you die I gotta admit to a lot of confusionPain in the head is the child of collusionGotta resist the creeping malaiseYou gotta beleive in the way you get out of the maze But you, you just keep on pretendingYou can tell a sucker from a friendBut you still raise the knife toStranger, lover, friend and foe alike Who was born in a house full of painWho was sent out to play on his ownWho was raised on a diet of shameWho was trained not to spit in the fanWho was told what to do by the manWho was broken by trained personnelWho was fitted with bridle and bitWho was given a seat in the standWho was forcing his way to the railsWho was offered a place on the boardWho was only a stranger at homeWho was ground down in the endWho was found dead on the phoneWho was dragged down by the stone RAVING AND DROOLINGPink Floyd 1974 Music, lyrics and vocals: Waters Raving and drooling I fell on his neck with a screamHe had a whole lotta terminal shock in his eyesThat's what you get for pretending the rest are not real Babbling and snapping at far away fliesHe will zig zag his way back through memories of boredom and pain How does it feel to be empty and angry and spacedSplit up the middle between the illusion of safety in numbersand the fist in your facehttp://pinkfloydhyperbase.dk/unreleased/index.html#raving

SmoothedShredder
Anyone ever line up "Wish you were here" with the second part of Wizard of Oz? You pause the tape right when the cd ends... put in Wish you were here and press play at the same time.Shine on you crazy diamond doesn't have much syncronisity, but the alarm bells for Welcome to the Machine "wake up" Dorty and the Lion when they are put to sleep in the poppies by the witch... The First Deep bars of Welcome to the machine come in when they look up and see Oz... very effective... there were lots of other things too but I can't remember right now. ollie
so You've got to be crazy is the original title of "Dogs" ... I always wondered about why it was called Dogs, doesn't seem to have any reference in the song lyrics.I always took Animals to be a cynical indictment of the human race, describing 3 archetypes or entities, very broadly:Dogs - corporationsPigs - politiciansSheep - the populaceThe lyrics are on this album are among my favourite. Dogs in particular is incredible.

TheGoodRev
I agree Ollie, I understand the album the same way.Dogs are slick, heartless business types; the first part of the tune is written as if its one expert Dog teaching others how to operate:"Gotta sleep on your toes when you're on the street,Got to be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closedThen moving in silently downwind and out of site,You've got to strike when the moment is right without thinkingAnd after awhile, you can work on points for styleLike the club tie, and the firm handshakeCertain look in the eye and an easy smileYeahAnd in the end you'll pack up, fly down south, and hide your head in the sandJust another sad old manAll alone and dying of cancer"What a mammoth record. Some of Gilmour's finest work, too.
