By 1971 Dave Torbert had replaced Lesh, and Spencer Dryden, formerly of Jefferson Airplane, had joined as the group's permanent drummer. One of the many gigs with the Dead included the Trans-Canadian Festival Express with Janis Joplin, The Band, and other American and Canadian artists like Ian and Sylvia, who had with them a brilliant, innovative pedal steel player named Buddy Cage. When Garcia's busy schedule made it increasingly difficult for him to play with the New Riders, the talented Cage was the perfect choice to fill the pedal steel spot. He moved from Toronto where he had been working in Anne Murray's band, to California in the fall of 1971 to join the New Riders. The New Riders, signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis, released its eponymous first album in September 1971 to widespread acclaim. In the next 11 years the band toured and released over 12 albums, selling over 4 million recordsDavid Nelson was an important figure in the musical vanguard of the influential Haight-Ashbury music scene that spawned the Grateful Dead. He played guitar on three of their pivotal albums, Aoxomoxoa, Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. Both Nelson and Garcia are credited with being the forefathers of the San Francisco scene. Nelson, who sang one of New Riders' biggest hits, a cover of bluegrass great Peter Rowan's "Panama Red," went on to write songs with longtime pal Robert Hunter after the band's demise. Not only has Buddy Cage sold over four million records in his ten years with the NRPS, but he has also performed on many gold and platinum albums during his distinguished career including Blood On The Tracks (Dylan), Biograph (Dylan), The Official Bootleg Tapes (Dylan) and various releases with Ann Murray. Cage has also recorded with John Cipollina (Quick Silver Messenger Service); Mario Cipollina (Huey Lewis and The News); Rick James; Rick Danko and Garth Hudson (The Band); David Rea (Fairport Convention and Mountain); Ian and Sylvia (Great Speckled Bird); The Shondells; David Bromberg (with Bonnie Raitt)' Pappa John Creach (Hot Tuna); Sly Stone; and Vassar Clements, to name a few.Rounding out the band in 2007 is guitarist/singer/songwriter Michael Falzarano (Hot Tuna - famed offspring of The Jefferson Airplane), Ronnie Penque on bass and vocals (Stir Fried), and Johnny Markowski on drums (Melvin Seals and JGB). Together their accomplishments include touring and recording with the likes of Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Copeland, Hubert Sumlin, Vassar Clements, Paul Simon, Dr. John, Peter Rowan, Robert Hunter, John Popper, Pete Sears, and Barry Sless.Hope to see you there!Ticket Information$25 ADV $30 DOS, available at Shady Grove, Spiritual Smoke, Pepper Jack's,and Looney Tunes in Burlington.
