Exclusive: Phish On The Hook

I really don't think that Mike was up to anything underhanded. This is not a shady old boathouse by the sounds of it, apparently there were security guards around.

Being a dad myself i would not have my son at a Dead show at 1am...and if i did, he would not be going off on scooter rides with anyone.

This sounds like a horrible misunderstanding, and it really reflects upon the state of the world...peole instantly see mike as a kiddy fiddler when all evidence points to an innocent, if somewhat stupid act on mikes part.

i will still enjoy phish and their music - when you are famous, you have to watch your back.

Once again, Mr. Musicface has made a brilliant point. It is actually widely beleived amongst the less sensationalist, glory-seeking socoiologists that child abuse and molestation is in the decline. This is entrely due to the fact that it has had so much attention. Kids are being taught from a much younger age that it is wrong when a grown-up or other kid touches them in an akward place or hurts them. They are being encouraged to come forward and to not be afraid. Like Mr. M said, the attitude has changed from a kid's fault, let's keep it quiet and not dishonour the fmaily and community to one of facing the problems head on and stopping these people who hurt children. A great example is the priests of the catholic church who have probably been molesting alter boys since the middle of the first millenium, and only now are people bringing their stories to light and hopefully stopping some of this harrasement. Change is slow, but awareness must be had first before change can even begin.

And let us not forget the Socratic method which would have teacher's sodomize their students to enforce the dominant, submissive relationship. that goes back a long, long time.

I personally have a few friends with histories in their families of this sort of thing, and it has never, ever been talked about wven within their family. There is no way to measure the amount of this type of behaviour that has gone on in the past, and it is easy to believe that things are worse, when in reality, they might be better than before simply by teh fact that we hear about it more often.

In my previous post I brought up the rise in violent abduction-related sexual abuse of children, which I've just observed seems to be in the news monthly... that and internet child porn has been doing a booming business which shows a large interest in pedophilia by society... child porn is sensationalized in the news constantly which I feel is increasing interest... In doing some research, most government and private organizations agree that sexual and other forms of abuse and neglect involving children are actually on the increase... whether it is being reported more or there is just more of it... while some things such as rape have become easier for some people to report to the authorities, it is still largely not reported in cases of sexual abuse by family members or other authority figures because there are a lot of confused feelings involved... most sexual abuse involves family members or people trusted by the family... children don't feel they can or should try to get the authority figures in their lives in trouble... 40 percent of Canadian female prostitutes interviewed in 2002 (between the ages of 12 and 35) had been sexually abused at home... 30 percent of male prostitutes interviewed same deal

quote:

In Canada, the extent of child and adolescent physical and sexual abuse and neglect is difficult to ascertain given that no national standardized data collection system exists. Provincial and U.S. estimates, however, tend to indicate an increase in the rate of child abuse incidents over the last decade. It is not clear whether this is related to changes in reporting practices reflecting the broadening of the child abuse concept or willingness to report or to an actual increase in incidents of child abuse. Adding to the uncertainty is the fact that sexual and physical assaults are believed to be vastly under-reported, which further complicates the task of rendering any precise and valuable estimation.

Commercial Child Sexual Exploitation - National Association of Social workers

Canadian Youth Foundation - Family Context / Child Abuse

Council of Europe - "what is needed is a kind of supervision by society"

not to bum out anyone's day, just got looking for facts... best you can probably do for your kids is be honest with them, encourage and allow them to be honest with you... and never be afraid to directly ask anyone associated with your child if they have any wierd issues that may compromise your child's well-being... the fact that people feel they can't talk about unusual sexual feelings without negative repurcusions probably does the most harm...

glad things seem to be clearing up for Mike... I figured it was pretty innocent as Kung and Groove Fetish described... I've been at lots of fringe events with crowd savvy kids and have yet to witness a problem...

Yeah, Mr. Musicface described me as a 9 year old too. I used to walk up to really interesting and new things and want to try them (like asteroids and space invaders)

I guess these days, when your 9 the friggin' 2-wheeled 'lazy legs' is probably one of the neatest inventions out now.

Hey y'all

A couple of things as I read this.

First,

I think it's true that your perspective changes when you become a parent. You become irrationally protective. That's a good thing, it's instinctive, it's innate (I once saw a goose beat a guy to the ground for walking too close to a gosling) but it doesn't make it rational. The trouble is that our culture of fear has made it acceptable to promote this irrational behaviour. We seem to crave the destruction of some unseen evil force in order to quash our fears of something that will probably never happen to us. (unless, in this case, you are related to a damaged person or you're catholic). It makes us feel better because we can't actually stop something that isn't happening to us. It helps us feel like heros in an era when most people barely feel like anything.

Also, a lot of studies show that while publicity of crime is up 1000 percent, crime (including abduction) is actually down 10-30 percent throughout North America. For example, last year's "Summer of Abduction" (thanks CNN)actually had the lowest number of reported abductions in decades. It just so happened that there were acouple of pretty, white, telegenic kids that were UNFORTUNATELY assaulted and taken.

Next,

You don't become a pedophile at 38. It just doesn't happen. And you don't get away with it for twenty years unless you work for Maple Leaf Gardens, the Catholic Church or you only prey on your family. He just doesn't fit that profile.

Finally,

I am a teacher.

We don't go out of our way to protect ourselves from being alone with students because abuse is common. We do it because paranoia, hysteria and self-righteous vengence are common.

good points bald

- parental over-reactions are natural

- people who have compulsions towards children almost always have a known history of such

- the kids who got all the media attention when abducted were white child beauty queen types (didn't know abductions were down at the time)

I think the media is really what upsets me

this whole mike thing is crazy. EVEN WHEN i disregard the reported facts that clearly state that (i) the "victim in question's family" goes on record to say that it was a misunderstanding; (ii) this family goes on the record to say they specifically did not want this to become a media frenzy. and (iii) that there was no evidence of wrongdoing whatsoever (other than being stupid). and EVEN WHEN i disregard my general disdain for the sorry society we live in that is willing to believe everything (even a war!) that the consolidated right-wing media monsters that are now called the "press". and EVEN WHEN i disregard the past 12 months of working with mike day-to-day on his solo record (which happens to come out on tuesday!) where he showed an extremely rare passion for his art, that manifested itself through constant phone calls and daily emails with different creations including his music, his writings, his ideas, his movies and yes....his pictures!

EVEN WHEN i disregard all of THAT, there's one compelling reason that brings me immediately to his defense: mike gordon's our artist and he's our friend! helloooooo "innocent until proven guilty?"

Funny - that's a description of me both as a 9 year-old and as a 29 year-old. Some things never change, I guess... [Roll Eyes]

The contents of this story (especially as laid out by MSNBC) paint a picture in our collective heads that Mike was becoming or trying to become sexually involved with this girl. However, at no point did any story anywhere state this. An American is considered innocent until proven guilty. Sure, standing in a boathouse at 1 AM with a nine year old is stupid as all hell, but that does not make him a pedophile.

MIKE HAS NOT BEEN FOUND GUILTY OF ANY CRIME. And the crimes he has been charged with are NOT sex crimes. This leads me to believe, using logic, that Mike is not a sex offender.

Use your heads people.
