Velvet
Just off the top of my early-risen head, I'll say a tie between Great Gig In The Sky and R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Thanks you, and good morning.
Jaimoe
Really tough question, however, one song comes to mind immediately: " Gloria " by Patti Smith from Horses. This is one heavy song from a groundbreaking punk album. " Gloria " jams out hard too.
Jaimoe
Also, Patti Smith's live version of The Who's " My Generation " from the Horses re-release is almost as good as The Who's original version! Buy this album. Note: when you listen to Horses , you should immediately notice that Courtney Love ripped Patti Smith off vocally.
SmellyPants
that song where Madonna and Britney and Christina get down and dirty ...no, actually quote: absolutely loving the tune strange man ...me too, but sung by the AWESOME Lisa Mackey (of DSO folks) 05:54 AM ......and why is Donna wailing at 5:54am????? Baaaaddddddddd ewe....go to bed!

That whole show is full of Donna goodness. But the best thing I've ever heard was a JGB cover of the weight from the Acton show back about 6 years ago (Shakedown production with Fat Cats and Uncle Jack's mushroom band). Gloria Jones was still with the band but this other female vocalist busted out a version of "The Weight" that just blew me away. I was on mushrooms with my new girlfriend at the time, and the sun was going down. It was perfect.
Schwa.
Sharon Katz does a sweet job on "My Own Way", a Hookah song. I also like the Great Gig call by Velvet.

MarcO
Put me down for this classic: Why’d Ya Do It? by Marianne Faithfull from: Broken English (1979) When I stole a twig from our little nest And gave it to a bird with nothing in her beak, I had my balls and my brains put into a vice And twisted around for a whole fucking week. Why’d ya do it, she said, why’d you let that trash Get a hold of your cock, get stoned on my hash ? Why’d ya do it she said, why’d you let her suck your cock ? Oh, do me a favour, don’t put me in the dark. Why’d ya do it, she said, they’re mine all your jewels, You just tied me to the mast of the ship of fools. Why’d ya do it, she said, when you know it makes me sore, ’cause she had cobwebs up her fanny and I believe in giving to the poor. Why’d ya do it, she said, why’d you spit on my snatch ? Are we out of love now, is this just a bad patch ? Why’d ya do it, she said, why’d you do what you did ? You drove my ego to a really bad skid. Why’d you do it, she said, ain’t nothing to laugh, You just tore all our kisses right in half! Why’d ya do it, she said, why’d ya do what you did, Betray my little oyster for such a low bitch. Why’d ya do it, she said, why’d you do what you did ? You drove my ego to a really bad skid. Why’d ya do it, she screamed, after all we’ve said Every time I see your dick I see her cunt in my bed. The whole room was swirling, Her lips were still curling. Why’d ya do it, she said, why’d you do what you did Why’d ya do it, she said, why’d you do what you did Why’d ya do it, she said, why’d ya do it, she said, Why’d you do what you did ? Oh, big grey mother, I love you forever With your barbed wire pussy and your good and bad weather. Why’d ya do it, she said, why’d you do what you did ... Ah, I feel better now. MarcO
Obviously, that ^ was a goof. Seriously, my favorite female vocal performance? No problem: Sandy Denny (w/ Fairport Convention) singing "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?" sigh..... beyond beautiful.
Velvet
Hey, Sandy Denny...didn't she sing with Led Zeppelin? What's that tune...?
Tungsten Gruvsten
I agree with all of the above, but here's a couple left fielders that have always hit me: Misguided Angel - Cowboy Junkies...shiver city. Fade Into You - Mazzy Star...just the right thing sometimes... Isobel - Bjork...really shows off all the crazy nuances she has in her voice... Tons of motown ones, too many to name... hamilton
quote:Originally posted by Velvet: Hey, Sandy Denny...didn't she sing with Led Zeppelin? What's that tune...? Yeah. "The Battle Of Evermore". If I remember correctly from Richard Thompson's biography, Zeppelin and Fairport Convention toured America together in about 1970, although Sandy Denny would have been out of the band by then.
