afro poppa
the canon powershot SD's are a good series of cameras. I have an old SD600 and it took a licking and kept on ticking while backpacking around wiht it. It takes great pictures as well...I bot it about two years ago so I am sure the quality has just improved. I recommend the SD series because it doesn't take batteries, it uses a lithium battery and charger....
bouche
how much are you looking to spend? The Canon powershot line has lots of options. SD 870 is on sale right now. Image Stablization is a great feature so make sure you get that on one of these. It's great for the video functionality. You can get a basic SD 1000 for $179 though. bouche
haha. just noticed we just rode the same wavelength. The benefit afro mentioned about the battery is usually overlooked. That is a great feature.

afro poppa
My camera has six and it takes great pictures!
bouche
you don't need a 12 megapixel camera. If that is the only selling point or difference between a cheaper 6-8 megapixel, don't bother. That's overkill for a point and shoot. Do you plan on printing posters with every picture?
The D Funk
thats not the only difference i have done my research and it looks like the canon sd 950 is, is the best one they got out now, apparently the three new models dont have as nice and easy controls but who knows!!! phishtaper
ive always been of the mindset that its better to spend money on a better lens and on a brand name known for photography than to spend on bells and whistles. now, how to apply that approach given the hundreds of cameras out there, that's the issue. ive had a small kodak digicam for years now and am still going strong with well over 25,000 pics taken. the only thing i'd have liked is if it took better low light pics, and if it was faster between shots (I have to wait sometimes). i also find the dock invaluable. Ms Zimmy
What does phorbesie use again? Her camera takes really clear pictures.
ollie
If you're using your camera to do nothing more than takes pics to put on facebook and stuff like that, I don't see the point in spending more than $100.Phorbesie has an Olympus. I have a similar model. I think my next camera will be a Nikon though.
Davey Boy 2.0
canons have the reputation of having the best lenses, generally speaking.if you have a look at technical specs, look for the number of elements within the lens- the more the better, generally. Also http://dpreview.com/ is indipensible.

Kanada Kev
Here's one a bit cheaper, but a private sale:http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-cameras-camcorders-CANON-SD-950-IS-12-1-mp-CAMERA-W0QQAdIdZ50522029I'm looking at getting a new camera too. I have an older Canon, but am ready to upgrade to something smaller, yet still takes great shots (which mine no longer does on a regular basis). That 870 is looking pretty damn good. The D Funk
yah the 870 is a good camera on sale, right now to bootbut it takes really brutal low light shots, i had one for a month and then it was stolen.thanks for the heads up kev
dancingbear
i have the sd 800 and love it. it takes great shots. i like the fact it has a viewfinder especially because i shoot a lot of outdoor pics. my only complaint is the when the battery icon flashes you have maybe three more shots, compared to sony where it tells you exactly how many minutes you have. Kanada Kev
The Canon SD870 is on sale again ($299). This time at Future Shop. I'm going to print this out and go to Best Buy at lunch and pick one up (get a few more dollars off by beating the price in the ad ) http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&MSCSProfile=3C79F0C7EA3162B25DCF0857B6387C8E79682BD7F5A3939B05E169A7C22041826D664EF13C5585468CE0E03727F4CE2D98F864754D2B9EA1B16A0DBF7791013ED174ECC1C238F92455863BCDAFF0AD91277E4E933032A0F107655F58171886E917E4151F25B0CBDDF01E67541EB68DF01E5E1B64283DEE640C84959EEA06E664C113A63A94EE6541E70D8B2FD3F2522898E1F3FBDC029CB6672E6BCF9BA51CC3FFB85A09F2813386DEE561A7162A8FF08335B47601B84B4E99938FB5F35BD64418C2D410FB106FCD&sku_id=0665000FS10094023&catid=&test_cookie=1 Edited May 30, 2008 by Guest

bouche
basically you are looking at the Class rating on SD cards. The higher the class rating, the faster the memory is, and more suitable for higher bandwidth (Megabytes per second) applications. I believe a Class 6 SD card is suitable for HD full motion video transfer with no lag.SDHC Ultra - Class 2 - 2 MB/secSDHC Ultra II - Class 4 - 4 MB/secSDHC Ultra III - Class 6 - 6 MB/secI've purchased only Class 6 cards recently for my nikons. YOu can get good deals, but you should be fine with Ultra II.
Kanada Kev
Thanks for the details. I did go with the Class 4. Charging up the batt right now. Should be good to go by the time i'm outta work. Should keep me occupied on the GO Train ride home Oh yea, and i'm definitely going to use that 'hack' that was posted as well. Looks cool: http://lifehacker.com/387380/turn-your-point+and+shoot-into-a-super+camera Edited May 30, 2008 by Guest
