But sorry your little precious band who's album is probably quite good but who's concert was, in my EYE, lacklustre. Then again I don't drink, wasn't on molly and have, you know a valid perspective.

Well in this case 'in the know' meant for me two musicians in prominent (one-ish) bands, one Soundscapes on College record store employee and our own Allison Billings whose literal estimation was that the Cave Singers stood out over headliners Dr. Dog (I want to say M said the same thing)- you have to remember I take straw polls at most shows and recognize alot of people from growing up in TO and covering concerts later in life, I keep my ear to the ground in a way that a casual showgoer doesn't (nor should they).

It's a different beast researching a show or a band from the perspective of a writer, reading through their interviews and bio, acclimatizing yourself to a band's repertoire- it's fun but it's also work. It happens I'm a sous chef also (and a few other things) it's sort of the same thing - okay you eat in restaurants but do you know anything about food? I can't play a note but I know everything about Music.

So what do people in "the know", know exactly?

Which band sells the most CD's?

Which bands tour is more profitable?

Who has the best musicians?

Who has the best lyrics?

Who energizes a room more?

Who has the most fans?

Who is played on radio more?

It all sounds ridiculous to me. The fact is music is a very personal to everyone individually. People are moved by music for many reasons. People who can't even play a note can be greatly affected. Then there are those who create generic sounds to play for the masses. The music doesn't mean anything but is just there to make money. Even in these songs someone out there will find it touches them.

My point is that people in "the know" really know nothing other than what they like to preach to each other. It does come off as elitest.

If I want to tell someone that MC Hammer wrote and produced some of the greatest music I have ever heard who are they to tell me different? It's all about how it affected me personally.

Everyone should have their own opion but saying you are in the know makes someone sound like a pompous ass.

I'm not a writer and have read very little about music. I just know what I like and what moves me. People in "the know" can kiss my ass.
