  1. "To implement Facebook to its fullest potential is to establish oneself as part of the new social elite." ?????????? I must be too old to understand. How exactly do you define "social elite"?
  2. "its influence over society should be seen in the light as the telegraph, telephone and email." methinks you are getting carried away
  3. This is the kind of advertising money can't buy. Except that Bob pays me to plug his restaurant.
  4. My old all-time favorite breakfast place in this city was a spot called Baker's Street Bar & Grill. It had the best everything for years and was on Elgin at Frank. It closed down years ago, but has just reopened in Westboro where Gentle Annie's used to be. I can only hope it is as good as it once was. Other than that, Stoneface Dolly's on Preston, of course.
  5. Hey there Heather, hope your having a killer B-day celebrating with Warren and the Brothers Allman. Rock on!
  6. That's a long short list, buddy. Wayne was on fire last night!
  7. Links to a few tunes. http://krugersottawa.com/doc/krugersiknowurider.mp3 http://krugersottawa.com/doc/krugerswaterfallgood.mp3 http://krugersottawa.com/doc/krugersdontthinktwice.mp3 http://krugersottawa.com/doc/krugersworkinonbuildg.mp3 http://krugersottawa.com/doc/krugerssarahfinale.mp3
  8. The Kruger Brothers are coming back to town. Friday, August 10th. Doors 7:30, show 8pm. Academic Hall, Ottawa U. I saw these gentlemen at Mavericks last year and they play sweet sweet bluegrass. They are the real deal and well worth the $15 cover. "I haven't heard a set of music in many a day that I enjoyed more than I did the Kruger Brothers. That was...oh man....! As the saying goes, I was in hog heaven (laughs). The way they used Frosty Morn and Cuckoo Bird and Twin Sisters that old banjo tune, the way they wove that together with little, almost classical riffs between the songs yet not losing one bit of the flavour....I couldn't believe the work they had done on that music to put it together like that without taking away anything from the original. And their harmonies when they sing are so great!" - Doc Watson "I thought them cats must be from Kentucky. Then I found out they were from Switzerland. They were unbelieveable. Bluegrass don't get any better than what those boys can do" - Ronnie Hawkins
  9. I'm finally recovered from Bluesfest so I'll be there for sure. Any chance you'll make this one, Carstairs? Mooose?
  10. Don't sweat it so much, Brad. You already have a ton of great recommendations. Buy yourself a paper map and/or just hit the town on foot. It's Montreal, you'll have a great time and eat well no matter what. See you at Irene's tomorrow.
  11. Mondo Frites for late-night drunken take-out, just down the street from Scwartz's, has great fries and good veggie options. Their hot tofu sandwich kicks ass when hammered. And the fries have a thousand dipping options.
  12. Blue Nile on St. Denis for Ethiopian is delicious.
  13. La Paryse on Ontario St, about a block from St. Denis makes the best burgers in Montreal. Good, cheap, fast. AD's suggestion of Santropol is great, they have a wicked garden patio in the back with a fountain and lots of trees. Everything Blane says about food is always true.
  14. looking forward to this...
  15. The last time I ate at the Golden Turtle (and I do mean the LAST time)there was a huge roach (non-smokable) crawling around on the table. I pointed this out to the waiter, he shrugged and mumbled something and left it free to roam. That's one authentic Asian experience I don't need.
  16. The Manx is a great bar but, hello, the best draught selection in town? And then you mention the Pub Italia in the same post, which has at least 3 times as many selections on tap.
  17. I saw Spirit of the West at the NAC back in the '80s. One of the only times I've seen people dancing en masse, there. Thanks for the heads up, Velvet.
  18. Since I was last at the Northern 2, on Sommerset near Booth, the name has changed, but it still has the Northern in it. Sorry, I can't remember the new title. Either way, the food there is the real deal, or so my Chinese friend tells me, and the have the best dumplings I've tasted. The only English on the specials board is the mysterious "Meat Dragon." Try them out, they are cheap. Howler should be able to testify to this as well. Also, more honkified, So Good Restaurant is in the same area and great, especially for vegetarians. Shanghai can be fun especially on Karaoke night, which is Thursdays. It's family-run by a very cool family. Fettucine's take-out is pretty good, for what it is. Mama Grazzi's in the market is all right, too.
  19. An employment tribunal in England ordered Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, yesterday to pay a former chef $51,000 in compensation after she won a sexual-discrimination claim against them. Jane Martin, 41, won her claim in May. She said she was fired after she became pregnant. At a hearing earlier this year, Martin said she had worked for the 55-year-old pop star and his wife for eight years. She said Styler grew unhappy with her after she became pregnant in 2005, making her work long hours and growing angry when she took time off work because of illness. Martin, who accused Styler of having a "grandiose ego," left her job under disputed circumstances in April 2006. Sting and Styler said they have launched an appeal.
  20. Good to hear from you Blane. Malaria meds are a bitch. That said, malaria is no doubt worse. Thanks for the update. Be safe.
