  2. The line up comparison for the washrooms between the men and the women made me feel like I was at a Rush concert, it blew me away. The group I hung out in for the whole weekend was five guys and one gal. I would say it was around that ratio in the venue. Peace, Tim
  3. I have been listening to a lot of Simon & Garfunkel over the past couple of years. It likely has a lot to do with the fact that I have traveled to New York City on multiple occasions during that time. Though I have passed Garfunkel by on every previous occasion that he came my way, minus 2003 when he was on stage with Paul Simon, I felt this time I would quench my thirst for many of those Simon & Garfunkel songs by attending his stop in Toronto in 2009 and I was not disappointed. I do not know if it was because of Garfunkel recently sharing the stage again with his old friend Simon at the reopening of the Beacon Theatre this past Valentine's Weekend, but Garfunkel played far more Simon & Garfunkel songs than expected to my pleasant surprise. Maybe he is warming those songs up for the possible upcoming Simon & Garfunkel tour that has been discussed since the Beacon gig. With nine out of twenty songs from the Simon & Garfunkel canon, including "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" which I did not hear the two of them perform in 2003 I was very pleased with the setlist. Another highlight was "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" that was merged with Bob Dylan's "Girl From the North Country" a fitting merge of the two songs as both songs are discuss fairs. Art Garfunkel brought out his son James to help him sing on "Mrs. Robinson" and "Cecilia" with James also tackling the old Fleetwood's song "Mr. Blue" solo. Other songs selections surprised me with Garfunkel performing a beautiful rendition of Billy Joel's "An So it Goes" and one from one of Garfunkel's favorite songwriters Randy Newman's "Texas Girl at the Funeral of Her Father," which was a nice surprise as he usually performs the Newman song "Old Man" from his debut solo ablum 'Angel Clare.' A classic performed from Art's debut was the Jimmy Webb hit "All I Know." Unfortunately the show was under ninety minutes which is the minimum for an acceptable length for a headlining show, it clocked in at 1 hour and 25 minutes. In the end I enjoyed Art's vocals and his son's and he had a good back up band. Who know's maybe next time I see Garfunkel again will be with Simon and they will definitely play more than eighty-five minutes. Peace, Tim Art Garfunkel Roy Tompson Hall Saturday March 14, 2009 1. hello.

    Hello Old Friend
  7. That's a great lineup, I might have to do both bonnaroo and Rothbury in 2009. Peace, Tim
  8. I am also glad I got these Phish gigs downloaded right after returning from Hampton relisten them within a day of the shows. That said I might need to order the CD's since they will be remastered. It would be nice to have the highest quality available from these gigs. Peace, Tim
  9. I love the Flaming Lips and all the fun things they do on and off stage. Tim
  10. And the whole run of guests looks pretty sweet. Tim
  11. I would love to see my favorite guitarist Eric Clapton share the stage again with Derek Trucks along with Warren Haynes and the rest of the Allman Brothers Band. Tim
  12. I like it when Jack White spreads his wings. Tim
  13. From www.rollingstone.com Jack White Debuts New Band the Dead Weather: A Full Report From Private Nashville Show 3/12/09, 9:33 am EST Photo: David Swanson White Stripes and Raconteurs frontman Jack White unveiled his two latest projects Wednesday night in his hometown of Nashville: A new downtown office for Third Man Records, the imprint that’s offered his White Stripes and Raconteurs releases, and a new band called the Dead Weather. The new White-designed space for the vinyl-focused Third Man, just down the way from Nashville’s strip of trademark honky-tonks, will house the label office, a vinyl record store, a photo studio/dark room and a rehearsal/performance space. The new band takes White from the front of the stage back behind the drum kit, while the Kills’ Alison Mosshart mostly handles singing duties. The two are joined by White’s fellow Raconteur Jack Lawrence on bass and former touring Raconteur/Queen of the Stone Age Dean Fertita on guitar. Third Man will release the Dead Weather’s debut LP, Horehound — which White produced — in June, and Wednesday, the band offered some 150 friends and associates (among them, Raconteurs Brendan Benson and Patrick Keeler, the White Stripes’ Meg White and Tennesseans Sheryl Crow and Martina McBride) a preview of both the record and the forthcoming onstage versions, playing a five-song set in the Third Man performance space. The tracks — a sludgy, bluesy blend of psych-rock guitar, alternately stark and explosive rhythms and Mosshart’s sultry-to-siren vocal — take relatively logical leaps from the members’ other bands, White’s groove-heavy drumming elevating the Dead Weather’s Stripes-esque blues-rock moods and Fertita and Mosshart pulling in atmosphere and disaffected cool, respectively. The band’s beginnings, White said, trace back to the tail end of the Kills/Raconteurs tour, when he suffered a slipped disc and severe case of bronchitis that threatened to waylay his voice. His band went heavy on co-frontman Brendan Benson’s songs to finish the tour, and brought Mosshart in to take the lead for well-loved White tracks such as “Steady, As She Goes.†“It reenergized the tour,†White said of his now-bandmate Mosshart’s contributions. The onstage energy quickly blossomed into the new band. “We had one day off in Nashville where [Mosshart] had spent the night and the next day she would fly out,†White said. “So the three of us [White, Mosshart and Lawrence] said, ‘Why don’t we record a 7-inch?’… Dean just happened to be spending the night in one of the ante rooms [in my house].†“I’d been there for a while…†Fertita countered. That 7-inch grew into Horehound over a 15-day Nashville session that also made time for circus and gun range trips. The album and band certainly beg questions about the future of the members’ other bands, and plans as of yet, White said, are to play shows when the record comes out, and after Mosshart wraps an upcoming, months-long jaunt with the Kills. Beyond that, White said, he’s letting the Dead Weather and Third Man evolve naturally. “I mean it’s sort of a thing where, when the Raconteurs came out you get so hammered about it — everyone wants to put a label. Is it a side project? Is it a new band? Is it all that jazz?†he said. “I don’t know, man, just pick one of them — whatever you want to call it. The point is: There’s a new institution, there’s a studio, there’s a vinyl record label, there’s a pressing plant a few blocks away… Things can happen very quickly. Music will be in your hands quickly. And that’s the whole point of it.†Check out the Spring Album Preview in the next issue of Rolling Stone for more on Jack White’s new Dead Weather project and their June release. Nicole Keiper
  14. Interesting. Tim From www.billboard.com Jack White Forms The Dead Weather Jack White's new band. March 12, 2009 10:46 AM ET Michael D. Ayers, N.Y. Jack White has formed a new group called The Dead Weather with The Kills frontwoman Alison Mosshart. White takes drum and vocal duties, while The Raconteurs bassist Jack Lawrence and Queens of the Stoneage guitarist Dean Fertita round the four piece out. The group debuted a handful of new tracks last night (March 11) in Nasvhille from their forthcoming album "Horehound," due June 9 on White's Third Man Records imprint. Two of the songs are available now on iTunes: "Hang You From The Heavens" and a cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?" The group performed for an intimate crowd of 150 at the opening of White’s new headquarters. The office includes not only the label office, but also a vinyl shop, photography studio and performance stage. The Dead Weather is planning to support “Horehound†with a tour this June.
  15. I just got back from Virginia seeing Phish and now I have to save my money for the first weekend in April when I will be in the Big Apple to see the two living Beatles perform together for only the 4th time since the Beatles broke up. Peace, Tim
  16. I will be looking forward to the release of thenewno2's album "You Are Here" Peace and Love, Tim From: www.billboard.com Dhani Harrison Talks New Band, Beatles Video Game Dhani Harrison March 11, 2009 04:31 PM ET Gary Graff, Detroit Dhani Harrison could have started releasing records well before he was 30, but the small matter of being a Beatle's son made him cautious about the musical career path. Now, with the upcoming debut release from his band thenewno2, he's embraced the inevitable. "I did everything I could to not be a musician," Harrison tells Billboard.com. "I went to university (Brown), I worked as a designer, I competed in Olympic sport (rowing)...and I ended up being a musician. It's in the DNA, I guess." That said, Harrison -- who's recorded with his father's band Traveling Wilburys and on his last album, "Brainwashed" as well as collaborating with Jakob Dylan, Rooney and Wu-Tang Clan -- also brought some lessons he gleaned from his father as he and creative partner Oli Hicks started working as the thenewno2, whose "You Are Here" comes out March 31 after several different "soft release" incarnations online. "I think I learned a lot about not buying into a lot of hype," Harrison says. "I wanted to be a kind of faceless entity; I didn't want to be Dhani Harrison and the Muppets or something like that. I don't ever use my name for anything in terms of getting the music heard. My dad was always, like, 'Be a musician but don't be famous (because) you lose all your freedom'. He did a really great job of keeping me out of the press all my life, but I feel like I'm ready do to do what I want to do, and this is it." Harrison is also looking forward to another release this year -- "The Beatles: Rock Band" interactive game that's due out Sept. 9 and marks the Fab Four's first entry into the digital music distribution realm. He's been intimately involved in the project and promises it will feature "stuff that has never been heard, never been released," though he's not at liberty to reveal specifics. "I took the project to Apple and sort of convinced everybody to have a presentation," says Harrison, who was used as a model for some of the game's characters. "My job description is...being enthusiastic. We've been working on it for the past two years. This is the first one that is going to be totally, historically accurate. It's been a real headache, but it's been the most enjoyable work I've done in my life."
  17. This would have been sweet to attend. Peace, Tim From: www.billboard.com R.E.M. Surprise At Carnegie Hall Tribute R.E.M. appeared at Carnegie Hall. March 12, 2009 09:46 AM ET Michael D. Ayers, N.Y. R.E.M. made a surprise appearance last night (March 11) at Carnegie Hall. The band was being honored with a tribute show that boasted 20 different performers interpreting R.E.M.’s vast catalog. Stipe was humbled by the depth and range of the evening, and proceeded to play “E-Bow The Letter†off of 1996’s “New Adventures in Hi-Fi.†Patti Smith accompanied Stipe on vocals, while Peter Buck and Mike Mills played in the background. The evening was filled with memorable performances, drawing from a wide range of R.E.M. favorites, with many nods gong to the band’s work from the 1980’s. Darius Rucker passionately delivered “I Believe†from “Life’s Rich Pageant,†Rhett Miller belted out “Driver 8†from “Fables of the Reconstruction,†and Guster performed a banjo heavy interpretation of “Shaking Through†from “Murmur.†The Frames and Swell Season frontman Glen Hasnard also performed a stark, intimate version of “Hairshirt†from “Green†for which he opted to sing microphone-free. Tuscon based group Calexico served as the backing band for many of the evenings acts. Rachael Yamagata joined them on piano and vocals for “The Great Beyond,†a black-suited Bob Mould rocked on “Sitting Still†and songstress Keren Ann gave a chilling rendition of “Man on the Moon.†Other highlights included The Feelies doing “Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)†and Jolie Holland putting her country touch on “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville,†with Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio joining her on backing vocals. But the show stealer came in the form of Staten Island singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, who performed “Nightswimming†on an upright bass while running her voice through a series of filters and loops. But it wouldn’t be a complete tribute to R.E.M. without an ode to the college town of Athens of which they were born. Long time residents Vic Chesnutt and Elf Power teamed up for a strained version of “Everybody Hurts†and Athens’ power-poppers Apples in Stereo delivered “South Central Rain,†a song described as changing lead singer Robert Schneider’s life. This R.E.M. tribute follows in a series of tribute performances over the years produced by Michael Dorf, in which the money raised is used for various arts organizations. Here is the set and performer list for the R.E.M. tribute: “Fall On Me†(the dB’s) “The Apologist†(Fink) “Man on the Moon†(Keren Ann with Calexico) “Wendell Gee†(Calexico) “The Great Beyond†(Rachael Yamagata with Calexico) “Sitting Still†(Bob Mould with Calexico) “Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)†(The Feelies) “Nightswimming†(Ingrid Michaelson) “Hairshirt†(Glen Hansard) “South Central Rain†(Apples in Stereo) “Shaking Through†(Guster) “Supernatural Superserious†(Marshall Crenshaw with Calexico) “Driver 8†(Rhett Miller with Calexico) “World Leader Pretend†(Kimya Dawson) “Everybody Hurts†(Vic Chesnutt with Elf Power) “Perfect Circles†(Kristin Hersh and the Throwing Muses) “At My Most Beautiful†(Dar Williams) “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville†(Jolie Holland with Calexico) “I Believe†(Darius Rucker with Calexico) “New Test Leper†(Patti Smith) “E-Bow The Letter†(R.E.M.)
  18. Agreed, I was hoping that James would play with Calexico and do "Goin' to Acapulco" but I just looked and Calexico are playing in their home state of Arizona that night. Peace, Tim
  19. I love J.J. Cale and was lucky enough to see him play at Lee's Palace back in June of 2004. I was disappointed that Cale did not tour with Eric Clapton when they did their album together in 2006. I hear Cale does night like to fly so that might have been an issue to be a part of a huge tour. I am looking forward to listening to Cale's latest effort. Peace, Tim
  20. I was lucky enough to be at all three gigs and looking at it subjectively the second night was my personal best. I feel that way much to due to the fact that I had personal debuts of "Gumbo," "It's Ice" and "A Day in the Life." All three songs I have wanted since I became a phan of the band in the mid nineties. To attempt to look at it objectively I would say the first night was the best. As it was a Phish concert that covered all of their tricks. Phan participation songs, vacuum cleaner solo, trampolines and a cappella song mixed in between many epic Phish songs. That said I thought all three nights Phish were on their game and came to play. I am so looking forward to bonnaroo in June, especially for their Friday late night set. Peace, Tim
  21. I luckily got a ticket for this gig, it will be the first time Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr perform on the same stage together since the Concert for George over 8 years ago. And I believe only the third time since the Beatles broke up in 1970. Peace and Love, Tim From www.pollstar.com Something To Meditate On Posted on Wednesday March 4, 2009 at 03:15 PM 12 | While a full-fledged reunion of The Beatles is impossible now, a benefit concert for the David Lynch Foundation next month does feature the band’s surviving members. Paul McCartney will headline “Change Begins Within†April 4 at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. Joining Macca are special guests Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow, Donovan, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Moby, Paul Horn, Bettye LaVette and Jim James. Celebrities on hand will include Lynch, Russell Simmons, Laura Dern and surprise guests. The evening will raise funds to teach one million at-risk children to meditate, something McCartney learned how to do in 1968 when he and the rest of The Beatles, along with Donovan and Horn, traveled to India to study with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The singer said learning Transcendental Meditation on the trip has served him well over the years. “In moments of madness, it has helped me find moments of serenity,†McCartney explained. Sounds like a good start for a song. Tickets for the benefit go on sale March 9.
  22. Phish played 85 songs in three two set nights and performed on stage for well over 10 hours. I believe they will get to some of the songs mentioned sooner or later on this thread, yet I have to say while I was there I was astonished by the amount of material they performed over the course of a weekend. Peace, Tim
  23. Good for Ryan Adams! Peace, Tim
  24. I am also excited about this album. I love Steve Earle and feel he is one of the most consistent acts in music today releasing above average material. Peace, Tim
  25. I would have gone to this but I will be en route to bonnaroo that night. Peace, Tim
