  1. I think it makes sense to view it as three different lanes, a pedestrian one, a bicyle one (the side of the road), and a car one, non?
  2. What I should have posted is this: If you are going straight you shouldn't have to yield, no matter what your mode of transportation. If someone is trying to turn in either direction, they must make sure someone isn't trying to go straight, be it someone driving in their own lane in the other direction, a pedestrian crossing the street, or a cyclist travelling in the same direction as you (who is also in their own lane - the side of the road being the bike lane).
  3. But it makes sense to wait for vehicles going straight when you're turning left?
  4. Which show(s) are you hitting up? I'll be at the first two, Sat and Sun.
  5. I think you're asking me as I brought that up in reference to 'ersh's post, and yeah, that's what I'm saying, and I base this solely on the standard rules in Europe. If you're are turning right in a car you must check to see no cyclists will be coming up on your right intending to go straight. If there is a cyclist coming, they have the right of way (as I mentioned earlier, if you turn right and hit a cyclist intending to go straight the fines are very heavy). Much like if you are at an intersection trying to turn left, you must defer to traffic coming the other way that have the intention of going straight. I do agree though that cars are to obey the same rules on the road as cars.
  6. Just got in from a lovely bike ride on the recreational paths along the canal and Ottawa River. On the way I noticed two spots where it is entirely vague as to whether I was on sidewalk or recreational path (Main Street and Colonel By, and in front of the former Congress Centre).
  7. Again, the cyclists are riding where they are supposed to ride. The reason it's not safe is because drivers think they aren't supposed to be there (and because the side of the road is where most of the potholes are, and if the city expects that cyclists treat the side of the road as their space in lieu of a proper cycling lane then the city should prioritise fixing those potholes).
  8. Oh yeah! Happiest of birthdays to you my good friend! I'm not even gonna mention it this year. Hope you treat yourself well today.
  9. The reality of the situation is that cyclists don't have their own place. The prevailing view of motorists is that roads are for cars and the prevailing view of pedestrians is that sidewalks are for walking. I can't tell you how many times I've been riding down Colonel By and someone yells at me to get off the road and onto the bike path. Well, it's not a bike path, it's a recreational path, with a speed limit of 20km/h, and I get yelled at to slow down when I'm on it. There are a myriad of areas in Ottawa where a dedicated bike lane just magically appears in the middle of three lanes of traffic. It's a start, but a dangerous one. One of my common turns is going left off of Pretoria Bridge and onto Colonel By. Well friends, if you've never tried it I dare you. If there's any traffic at all, utilising my right of way is a death sentance, so I have to cross to the corner, get on the sidewalk and wait for the light to change, like a pedestrian. So, here's one of a thousand cases where it's extremely dangerous to play by the rules, and by playing it safe I'm fostering more bad driving habits. What should I do in this situation? It's a chicken or egg thing. Bad cycling habits come from uneducated drivers, and uneducated drivers create bad cycling habits. Uneducated drivers, you might be saying? "Passing on the inside of a car turning right out of a turning lane was the first thing I learned to watch out for." In this case the cyclist is doing the correct thing, and the onus is on the automobile to always check over their right shoulder and stop for oncoming cyclists. On my cycling trip through Europe I was absolutely amazed at how cars ALWAYS deferred to cyclists and how cyclists ALWAYS followed the rules. It didn't hurt that there were completely distinct paths for pedestrians and cyclists, and every single road had a dedicated bike lane. In the case 'ersh mentioned, in Denmark if you turn right and nail a cyclist, apparently the fine is enormous.
  10. Don't forget Take It Back (do do do do). He (along with most of Stallone's family) made an appearance in Rocky singing his song around the garbage can. As the film had to come in under $1,000,000 Stallone used all the free actors he could find (his dad rings the bell in the final fight). The dog in the movie (butkis) was Sly's actual dog too. Best movie ever made.
  11. I agree that scalpers provide a valuable service. A policy where the official ticketing agency eliminates the possibility of getting certain tickets without going to scalpers is very wrong. I was referring to Bashers past posts where he was opining that ticketbastard was not breaching the law or ethics. Seems they were/are?
  12. The show I was referring to was in Montreal.
  13. For what would have been my first Clapton show, four of us offered a scalper $50 a ticket for $65 (or so) tickets, of which he had a stack. The show had already started but the guy said "No" and walked home with a lot of cardboard in his pocket.
  14. I can't believe Basher hasn't stepped up to bat for Ticketbastard yet! And for the record, when I saw VH on that tour I bought the ticket from a scalper at below face. Take that, DLR.
  15. Good strategy Hux. This summer has been pretty concert epic for me too, but I think that may have been part of the problem. It seems like almost every weekend I was going one place or another, with hardly a chance to just sit around in the sun and get summer-bored. There are certainly worse scenarios!
  16. Police in Britain have launched a review into the death of guitarist Brian Jones, a founding member of the Rolling Stones, who died in 1969. BBC News reports that police in Sussex, in southern England, were given new evidence connected to Jones's death. A spokesman for Sussex police said the force had been handed documents connected with Jones's death but it was too early to open a full investigation. Although the musician's death in July 1969 had been ruled as death by misadventure, many have speculated that he was murdered. Jones, 27, was found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool at a farmhouse in Hartfield, East Sussex. Formed The Rollin' Stones in 1962 The guitarist, who was adept at playing other instruments including the recorder, organ, saxophone and oboe, has been credited with coming up with the band's name, which was originally The Rollin' Stones. In 1962, he placed an ad asking for musicians to form a blues band and attracted several players, including Mick Jagger and his friend, Keith Richards. Eventually, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman joined the band. Jones, whose contributions to the Rolling Stones ended around 1968, either played or provided backing vocals on many hits including Street Fighting Man, Paint It Black, Under My Thumb, Ruby Tuesday, I Wanna Be Your Man and Money (That's What I Want). A heavy drug user, Jones became increasingly alienated from the band and released a statement June 9, 1969 saying he had split from the Stones. http://www.cbc.ca/arts/music/story/2009/08/30/brianjones-death-review.html

  18. Sure the last day of August isn't really the official end of summer, but to me August 31st means it's all over. Maybe it was the weather or just that I seemed to keep really busy, but this summer just flew by - it feels like it should just be getting started! Don't get me wrong, I had a lot of fun in the last few months, but I just don't feel like September should be dropping already!
  19. What a classy dude. It's marked on the calendar - I'll be picking this up October 13th.
