  1. Yes, "face the facts' or 'take it or leave it', etc.. but they all sound equally cliche. I guess also "you need to fucking deal with this, because it isn't going to change". I usually use 'it is what it is' when I am being twitchy and tweaky and someone expresses concern about it. 'Hey, if I can deal with it, you can. It is what it is.'
  2. Cute! Haha. Noted. Sorry. I am very guilty of this one. It does sometimes seem like the most direct way to communicate what I intend to communicate, which, as questcequecest? said is generally "face the facts". I guess I could say 'face the facts' but that has a different flavour to it. Great participation by all contributing skanks so far. This has been a lot of fun.
  3. Wow, this thread is a blast from the past. Dear Work - Thank you for putting up with my bullshit and always being like 'you are frustrating when you fuck off on us, and sometimes your twitchiness freaks out clients, but we couldn't do it without you' We need each other, you and I.
  4. I always found that one kind of cute .. along with other Monctonish peculiarities such as 'it is some cold out' The first time I heard that use of 'some' I was a little perplexed.
  5. (That's 'Question of the Night', BTW -- although I realize that on a Sunday night there aren't going to be many participants, so feel free to join in on Monday morning at which point it will be a QOTD) For me: - 'needless to say': If it is needless to say, then why are you saying it? And most people who use this particular phrase seem to have it as almost a vocal tic. It is like how I end every second or third sentence with 'and shit'. It's really annoying and shit. - 'it begs the question': Begging the question is a logical fallacy with a very specific meaning. What you probably mean to say is "It makes one wonder [xyz]", or "That prompts the question [xyz]" - 'the proof is in the pudding': No. No, it isn't. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting. What you just said is entirely meaningless. - 'nevertheless': Similar to 'needless to say', though not quite as irritating. - 'fuck you, d_rawk': self-explanatory Yours?

    Fish & Bird

These guys have just kicked off their tour. Besides being cool guys, their music is pretty rad. If any of the following float your boat: Will Oldham / Bonnie Prince Billy / Palace Music Red House Painters The Decembrists then you'll likely dig them. Last night was the last Ottawa show, but they'll be floating through Montreal and Toronto. their myspace page No affiliation, just really enjoyed their show.

    BURGERS!

After some moments of rest, I managed to bump it up to 5.

    BURGERS!

Pork burgers! These began somewhat by accident, but I've now made them a couple of times to much fanfare. No measurements, just use what you feel like you'll like. - Ground pork - 2 or 3 large garlic cloves, minced - half a white onion, finely chopped - A couple liberal splashes of Tamari (besides adding a lot of flavour, adds a lot of moistness) .. this is key [you could probably substitute soy sauce - never tried] - ground ginger - paprika - cayenne pepper - sea salt, black pepper Mix well, make patties, etc.. Pork is so easy to work with you probably won't need an egg to help keep it all together or anything. Cook to 160F. Feeling pretty full after eating 4 of these. Topped with ketchup, mustard, slice of avocado and shiitake.

    Elk

Extra bones and a striploin for d_rawk? Will pay handsomely.
  11. I'm very bad at this, too. Just adding a +1. As a butcher, I .. well .. I butcher the job. Easiest thing is to find someone who can butcher for you, I think, but it would be a good skill to get under the belt.
  12. Well on board with with this. I'd never had liver and was a bit apprehensive when I tried it, but I try to use up all that I can (turkey necks and such go into the stockpot). I found that anti-biotic free chicken livers soaked in lemon juice and flavoured right make for a good pate. My answer to Sassyskank's question is macaroni. My dad made the worst macaroni in the history of planet Earth. Truly ghastly. Even the shape of the noodles now makes my stomach queasy. I don't know how you fuck up a dish like that, but he managed to everytime.
  13. Cool! Out of curiosity, what are the other bands they were in that are to be oh-so-briefly re-united?

    Preserving

Oh nice. Did you already post the recipe? If not .. pretty please with sugar on top.

    Preserving

I don't do canning, but I do lacto-fermentation for preserves .. sauerkraut, kimchi, (brined) pickles, all that sort of thing. It's a different breed of preservation, though. Requires less paranoia about sanitation [no botulism concerns] and such, and also replaces the need for commercial probiotics. Would recommend anything by Sandor Katz or Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon.
  16. Is the organic farmer's market still around? I used to get mine there ... and if you ask them for their contact 'deets, you can let them know in advance how much you are looking for and pick it all up at once. The chickens were all local + organic + happily raised. Wish I still had the contact info for you, but it has been awhile.
  17. The convoluted sentence structure suggests that, yes, indeed, you do Ack! I won't ask. I likes me some TV when I am working because if I put on music I get too distracted. And I'm a news junkie, but the cool thing about being a news junkie + work is that the stories repeat themselves, so you can just tune out and have some background noise until your ears perk up to something interesting happening. Plus, I now have the fight network, so .. fuck yeah.
  18. Other than beer, which was a real bitch of a time, certainly cheese for me as well. Not that I need to lose any weight or anything (!), but it just doesn't really agree with my constitution. Goat/sheep cheese seems ok for the occasional treat in light doses, as it is the casein that seems to cause me the most problems. Giving up bread and gluten-containing pastas and such was surprisingly easy, besides the needing to educate myself on proper choices. So long as I don't try to eat out anywhere. Almost impossible.
  19. Didn't catch the peak, but saw a number of little ones and one real kick ass one in some field somewhere out in total countryville. Was cool!
  20. Looks like we're just gonna drive south as far as possible and see where we end up. Thanks for all of the suggestions!
  21. Thanks Skank By Night. I was kind of thinking that too, but was concerned about park times. I think the shower is supposed to hit its' peak at 1:30am or so.
  22. a) anyone watching this tomorrow night? where would be the best location inside the local Ottawa area if I wanted to see the galaxy be all weird and cool and shit? Thx!
  23. We ended up watching UFC 105 (Couture vs. Vera and all that). Will probably see if I can catch this fight tomorrow as a torrent.
