I take it you have no storage space that you could just fill some boxes with and put them aside. Away from the light and in not too bad temperatures they'll last a looong time. By that I mean if I had a cd collection rather than a digital music collection, I would keep all the cases for the very same reason that they are part of the collection. When I moved it all to digital, though, I lost track of most of the cd's I had (cd's and cases) since I'm a fan of the giant on the computer music library and can't much be bothered by cd's.

Thanks brad. It's going to be a blast and I think trey will love it. We're getting him a super-hero costume tonight for the kids tent costume parade though he's probably too small to actually go all the way up on the stage if they do that again, he'll still have a blast. Just in the past two weeks he's learned how to dance and he just LOVES hearing music and dancing, it's the cutest thing (one dance, the bum dance, is to go on all fours, lift up the arse and shake it all around, too funny). UAC is noticeable when you are installing something. It's what pops up a message asking if you give permission to do something (in the case of a program install, modify the files). The problem is that it can (or could, they may have made it better) popup many, many messages for simple little installs. When vista first came out I remember the dumbest one I had before disabling it was 13 do you wish to proceed type messages on top of each other (yup, overlapping windows). I'm not entirely sure what it would have had to do with torrents and such but in my opinion it's better turned off if you like to install lots of programs or do things that modify system files/settings. Also, if I were you I wouldn't bother checking changelogs and such. If you do however feel like going through the effort, maybe send an email to the utorrent folks to mention to them what's happened. Even if you don't want to actually do any of the studying, you can send them an email detailing the problem and that it wasn't in the older version and let them do the checking. Either way it will make the product better in the end. Glad it's working for ya now though. Don't worry on this too hard, things like this happen (Nero burning software is one such example that seemed to become complete poop after they had released a new version and most people had to go back to old versions although I don't remember the version numbers off hand, the newer, and I think current version, is back to old school creating coasters instead of properly burnt cd's/dvd's).

Personally I just turn off the firewall and defenders and such and make damn sure not to go to bad websites or open email attachments I don't trust. Just an antivirus for me. For torrents, make sure to use utorrent, works for me anyway and it has the smallest cup/memory footprint (doesn't hog your computer). for p2p I don't know. I don't really trust p2p so I don't use it and use newsgroups instead. Edit: Turn off UAC

I have vista and have no problems. Make sure that if you use the firewall/spyware/defender things that come with it, you have all the settings correct in there (allowing the traffic through). I don't use any of that crap but I've found that things like firewalls often cause people problems because they are complicated to setup and when they are built in and come from microsoft, they tend to allow most microsoft things (dangerous) but block most other stuff. Other than that, who knows. I know I turn UAC off as soon as I install vista as it's super annoying but your bios should not in any way be related to your OS (in other words, there's absolutely no reason whatsoever that you would have to modify bios settings for this or you would have to also modify them for xp and any other os, like linux, that you put on that computer). The bios is there to get the computer up and to start the bridging between the hardware and the OS which will be booted (hardware/memory addresses, IRQ's, etc, computer jargon, etc). Edit (even more complicated stuff): Vista uses IPV6, the upcoming new standard for IP addresses (192.168.0.1 type thing, most people have seen them before). Since the internet still uses IPV4 and traffic comes in that way and must go out that way, Vista actually creates a seperate network connection for each real connection you have. All IPV4 stuff that comes in gets modified to IPV6 and the IPV6 stuff that goes out has to be modified to IPV4. I don't 100% understand how it works but I know that it caused problems with me at my work so I had to completely disable IPV6 (the routers didn't like that Vista tried to use it or something, who knows). IPV6 is the future and has to come but it's too early and adds overhead to Vista when it comes to networking. It's probably not the problem but them it might be. I know rogers is fine (at least off hours in the early morning I can get great speeds). Also, I looked it up and though it looks like there might be such a thing as you mentioned, vista capping the half-open connections outbound, so did XP SP2 which I guarantee is running on your xp machine (SP2 is old, they just came out with an SP3 but I doubt there are many xp boxes out there that are still SP1 since the service packs are part of automatic update and all cd's since SP2 came out (a while ago) include SP2. Good luck. Usually when stuff like this happens I find it easier to skip "fixing" it and just use what works. It doesn't sound like you have a router so just get one and plug both machines into it and then use XP to download. You can always move the files back and forth between the two machines quite easily.

Because the masses crave stupid gossip about people they don't know and for some reason wish they could be. Just having JLo's name will get people to check out their site or watch the channel, etc, which means they will be affected by the advertisements also located on the same pages or channel or whatnot. Doesn't matter what the actual story is. Take this for an example, it's on this page and most likely other boards which means some people will be curious enough to check it out which means there's a possibility for them to be influenced by the advertising. Even if whatever article they write is literally "blah blah blah...", people will still search it out and might click on a link just because of her name (or some other celebrity) being in the subject. I have a hard time distinguishing between a properly encoded mp3 and the original (256kbps or more). Could be that my hearing isn't the best (which is true). Could also be that my stereo was under $1000. Combine the two and we have a perfect match: mattm + mp3. Also: I'm at work so I don't have time to get more statistics but if I search really hard I would be very willing to bet that with average equipment (even moderatly higher end equipment), most people couldn't tell the difference between a 190kbps (let alone 300+) and the original source. That said, if you download an mp3 from itunes or something like that, you are getting 128kbps which can be distinguished from the original (even by me with my audio setup). Pros: Personally I think the whole package is better digital (mp3, flac, shn, whatever, just on the computer), though. All the music in one spot is great for making mixed playlists and nowadays everything from cover art to lyrics to anything else can be included in an mp3 or can be included in whatever software is used to store the library (in case of flac/shn/wav files). I can open up winamp on my computer and immediately have access to 75,000 (or more, not sure what it is now) songs. All this connected to the stereo with the flat screen tv as the monitor and a wireless mouse means 75,000+ songs without getting off the couch. On top of that, winamp will automatically download for me nice things such as cover art, though it will also do that if I pop in an audio cd. Another thing that I really like is that, in my case, my entire music collection is on a portable hard drive. This means that I can take the whole thing with me in my backpack and pull it out anywhere there's a computer. On top of that, if I put a bunch of music onto my mp3 player, a PSP, and then bring that to another location, I can plug it into anything that has audio inputs and this can include cars, stereos, computers, tv's, basically most things with audio output capability will have audio input jacks which makes the music even more portable. One more thing here for the pros section is that after a while my cd's tend to get scratches which mean that they could skip or not play altogether. My mp3's on the other hand, will always play and the only reason they would skip is because the hardware playing them is too slow (and we have to go waaaaaaaaaaay back in time to find computers that slow, more than a decade if the mp3 program is all that's running). Cons (of mp3's): Step on a cd and you break it and have to replace it. Step hard enough on your hard drive (actually, you can stand on a hard drive all day and it will be fine, though if it's portable you might wreck the enclosure, the HDD inside will still be ok, give it a nice electric jolt on the other hand...) containing the music library and you've lost the entire library which is a little bit harder to replace (although I have a second hard drive which contains a backup of all the songs, it could also go down, but then I also have dvd's which contain the lossless versions of almost all the live stuff and also all the mp3's so I'm fairly well covered). Another con is that unless you encode the mp3's yourself, you have no control over the actual quality and as such, there is a very good chance that your music collection will vary quite a bit in quality as opposed to cd's which "should" be all good. My final con is that yeah, I do enjoy having an entire bookcase filled with cd's to look at. Like others, it makes me feel good (same with dvd movies as opposed to movies on the hard drive) and it's just plain cool when people come over and see it. Edit: Yeah, if the band is good, buy the cd, and then properly encode it into smaller format and stick it into the music collection. Help support bands, especially those without craploads of money to back them.

see what happens when you use ancient technology. I know computer cd-rom drives have a tiny little hole on the front that if you stick a paperclick (unfolded into one long piece of metal) into will cause the drive to open so that you can remove your cd if it's stuck. I'm not sure if this has something like it but I figured most cd-players had something in case this happens. Not sure though, it's been a long time since I've owned a cd player. Once you get the cd's out, also get with the times and get an mp3 player
