  1. I think this little article is a good read: http://business.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20090102.wagendamorgan0105/BNStory/Business/home Then again, could just be personal opinion but I think what she's saying is fairly sound.
  2. I'll never get the guts to do that but man that's cool and yup, it looks like it would be tremendous fun once you get past the fear.
  3. I can't find anything in the citizen online but little Trey and I will be there barring unforeseen circumstances (as in, if I feel it's not too cold to walk then we'll be there).
  4. I'm pretty sure Steph and I are going to buy the live panic shows and enjoy them as well as babysit our little niece and little guy. We'll see when it gets a bit closer but happy new years to all
  5. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2008/12/23/ot-081223-hockey-picket.html I guess it has moved on from a threat to a request to strikers (if it wasn't before): please don't go dinghy, it might get violent though I hope that doesn't happen.
  6. Tip: Rideau mall is pretty much dead (there were less people there last night than I've seen on a regular non-holiday night). I think there's lots on sale too (I only hit up sears and they always have sales).
  7. With rabbit ears here in ottawa I was able to get a couple channels but not too many. The us has implemented regulation that very shortly all channels must broadcast in HD. Canada has also decided this but has not set a date for it yet. If you're close to the border, you're good to go but not quite here yet. Another trick, though, is that if you do have the atsc or whatever tuner and basic cable you can do a scan on the channels and it will find tmn movies on demand channels and you can watch them. The only problem is that if the people decide to pause/rewind/etc, you have to watch that too but I was able to get a couple free movies in full before just paying for the cable straight out.
  8. PS: OS=linux, not supported by hotspotshield
  9. If the program bouche mentioned stops working or doesn't work as well as intended, a harder but doable fall back is: http://www.publicproxyservers.com/page1.html You have to configure your browser proxy manually and the proxies listed are sometimes slow or sometimes just shut down but after trying a few you can usually get one that works for a while with great speeds. Also, the list is not restricted to the us (so if you want to get something from say the UK that's not available here, find a UK proxy and use that...). I'd still recommend bouche's program, though, unless your ISP is capping encrypted stuff. Just to mention again, the manual proxy approach is frustrating if on that day none of the proxies are working so be warned, it's a last case scenario type thing (currently I can't get any of the US proxies on there to work and there are only 4 of them or so...)
  10. Man, I had no idea about that. I did some research and found exactly what you'd put up there wooly. I find it disapointing. Not as bad as censorship but still sucks that we can't see it here, especially when there are things like proxies to get around that very easily, renders it kinda pointless (although, there are most likely many people that won't figure out proxies, all it takes is one google search for something like can't see x show in canada to find the answer)
  11. ahhh, gotcha. So you're telling me that the CRTC is actually censoring the internet? Something tells me that's not such a good thing. I don't watch regular tv shows, didn't have a clue. It's not right. If you don't want to use the program bouche posted above, just do a search in google for proxy list, there's a couple sites that maintain pretty good ones. That's what I did during the canadian demonoid hiatus, proxy.
  12. Where do you guys see that black screen? Is it just satellite? (I've never seen it with rogers, and we have a lot of channels)
  13. Also to add: IE has always been full of holes, I like to think of it like a spaghetti strainer, always have. Firefox has also had some security problems but not near as many and for the most part they can be prevented (as in the statement by the mozilla people that it might have been in firefox but it could never install the stuff automatically without your approval). I'm not sure why a lot of people don't know about IE but I think it's mostly due to lack of caring much about learning security related computer stuff. If you don't have an IT background, it's much easier to just use IE and you are also much less likely to read IT papers. For that main reason it's also attacked much harder (same with windows) than it's competitors because it has a much higher percentage of oblivious folks using it. If you find it offensive when I say oblivious folks then don't as the oblivious folks are by far in the majority and there's nothing wrong with it (you should be able to be oblivious about these things if software is built correctly and works properly, especially if the software is geared to general use and the general public).
  14. I don't use IE unless I have to. Firefox is great and I think it's much better. Once you start playing around with it and customizing things a little it's almost impossible to go back. For example, say you have some sites you go to all the time but have a long address, something on the lines of: http://jambands.ca/sanctuary/showforum.php?fid/11/ Well, you can go to the page, bookmark and you're golden. Now, add firefox and you can be even better off. Head into your bookmarks, right click on the one you just made and give it a keyword (lets say jambands). Now go to your address bar and type the keyword (jambands in this case) and there's your page... Rogers Users: Firefox used to be pretty good at figuring out what site you were looking for. If you typed jambands in the address bar (and didn't have it set as a keyword to a bookmark), it would search google using I'm feeling luck (usually the top search result but I'm feeling lucky brings you straight to the page instead of a search results page). Well, rogers has recently decided to change that. Now, if rogers sees that the page you asked for doesn't exist, it will spit back it's own search page (of course filled with ads) instead of the error (it's the error that firefox waits for before searching google for you). Search google for a way to fix this
  15. I wish apple would release the SDK for windows/linux platforms. There is a way to play on those platforms but the simulator doesn't work so you have to have a jailbroken iphone to test it out which sucks cause I don't. I started looking at android but I'd much rather make a little program for the iphone then in android just because the market is out there for it now. Oh well, not much can be done I guess other than to buy a mac.
  16. The question is, if you ask someone something you can google, will they in turn just google it to get you the answer, thus rendering the original question to another human being somewhat of a superfluous step?
  17. Alas, Steph must work but I think Trey would enjoy seeing/hearing dave play so weather permitting, the two of us should be there. It's a bit of a walk without buses so if it's too cold or too snowy we just won't be able to make it but we'll see...
  18. Don't forget these people: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2008/12/16/ot-toy-mountain-081216.html
  19. well, since Steph and I have trey and probably can't go out for nye anyway, this is pretty good. Is there a way to capture it? Well, I'll let you know when I get a copy (if we decide to buy it). The only thing is that I've never captured something from there before so there's a chance that the first few songs are missed. I'll try to capture a free one first to setup but when it's live, there's no guarantees... Of course, that's probably all hypothetical since there are most likely copyright rules saying I can't record it anyway
  20. Hey Steve, Is this by any chance tiny little child friendly? I'd love to see this and I'd love for little trey to see dave play but I also know that it's a bar so generally kids aren't allowed (he's still to young to be influenced by things like bad language and such so that's not a problem yet).
  21. The reason for the price might be: That takes quite a bit of bandwidth and beats the crap out of the blueroom webcasts video wise. If the audio is also dvd quality then it might just be worth the $16 (especially since if you accidentally record it, you'll be able to watch it much further in the future than just 2009).
  22. You're right gateux and I'm sorry if I come across as whiny. The strike is taking a toll and it's frustrating. I've removed the whiny stuff from my post so it's not so offensive. AD: you're also right, it is our fault that little trey got a tiny little frostbite, of course it is but it's hard to cover his little face entirely because what if he can't breath? I wish cabs had car seats so we could go that route. Sorry for bothering you guys, I'll just bitch to myself until this thing is over and we can all go back to our lives. Thanks Freak
  23. Probably a while, the main reason (to my mind) being laid out in this statement here (quoted from the article you posted): Edit: There, just a nice little quote now, all happy.
