  1. It's on the HD channel called HDNET. Later today is the V-fest and then Son Volt.
  2. Jack implied that the new album will be quite a bit different than the last one. Everytime he says something like that, exciting things happen - see Icky Thump and the first Raconteurs album.
  3. I love the video for "Level". It was done live and it fucking rocks:
  4. Nasty game... and I loved every second of it, other than the result. I wish someone killed that Cooke weasel.

    Movies?

Only if you did so while listening to The Hold Steady.

And there's a real menace and air of dangerous unpredictablility with Brad Pitt's portrayal of Jesse. He more than holds his own in scenes with the celebrated Casey Affleck (Jesse is almost a co-star to Affleck's Bob Ford). Worth noting to all fans of No Country for Old Men, Deadwood, John From Cincinnati and The 4400 amongst many others, the great and really busy character actor Garrett Dillahunt (who played both the sadistic Wolcott and outlaw Jack McColl in Deadwoood) is excellent in Jesse James as one of the James Gang.

Were you laughing and smoking a cigar in the front row a la De Niro in Cape Fear? There Will Be Blood ain't an easy film by any stretch. The motivations of Daniel Day Lewis' Daniel Plainview are shrowded, intentionally so. No doubt this is the kind of film that will be studied in film classes. My wife thought she didn't like it (she certainly wasn't entertained for the most part), but continued to analyze Blood for a week after the fact and now believes it is one of the most thought-provoking films in years. It offers no easy "black and white" answers, but lots of grey. It reminded me of Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven, at least in the way it was shot.
  8. We all know the cover (and the movie), but look at it again. It's so strange seeing a very young Glen Hansard front and centre holding his guitar as bandmate Outspan Foster:
  9. I'm not sure if this is the place to start regarding The Frames, but their latest album The Cost has Frames versions of "Falling Slowly" and "When Your Mind's Made Up". All sound different than Once versions. It's an excellent record and I highly recommend it:
  10. Did you buy the soundtrack? Anyone who hasn't seen the film, try to avoid listening to the soundtrack since it will ruin some of the emotional impact and surprise in key scenes.
  11. It's my favourite film of last year and one of my favourites of the decade. Big shock eh?
  12. The list of Oscar performers was announced yesterday and low and behold, Once and The Swell Season's Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova will indeed be performing their nominated song "Falling Slowly".

I'm starting to like The Whigs thanks to New Rider.

    Ryan Adams

You may want to check out CD's from Ryan's early band Whiskeytown . One of the reasons why Ryan caused a sensation when he broke onto the scene was because of his first two solo albums, Gold and Heartbreaker. They are both excellent. I even like his Replacements diversion in 2003, Rock N Roll. I'd like to argue that Jacksonville City Nights is his best album. It's fucking old country and beautiful.
  15. Great band, although I've never connected them with mod. Two bands that come to mind when I think of mod-influenced bands from this era are The Hives and another great Swedish group, The International Noise Conspiracy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syJ-aE6JF5E
  16. Mod is one of the more pointless and shallow youth movements, but man, it had some good bands and interesting pop culture fashion. I believe the film nailed it.
  17. Mod focused on fashion and music and they seemed to hate those cursed "rockers". The Who came along a little late in the movement and weren't the biggest mod band.
  18. "Right and wronnnnnnng... Who the fuck threw that hotdog?!" The Who crowds were notorious for not liking the opening acts. The Clash got booed on the '82 tour. THE CLASH GOT BOOED. They were a better and more relevant band than The Who in 1982. I believe one or two songs on this killer live compilation was from the Clash/Who '82 tour:

  20. I was at the CNE again in the summer of '89 for the Stones' Steel Wheels Tour. That was a great concert even though Bill Wyman was starting to look like an old woman. Living Color played a short muddy-sounding set that few seemed to enjoy, but I did. Vernon Reid is incredible. Ironically, Corey Glover is co-starring in the traveling theatrical revial of Jesus Christ Superstar currently playing Toronto. Guess who's Jesus? Ted Neeley of course.
  21. I remember this 2nd Who Toronto show quite well. The Townshend solo stuff was great as was the Tommy opera (I was 21 at the time). Roger didn't bother me. Entwistle was a great as always. Simon Phillips ruled - I like him better than Zak. Steve Boltan was alright on electric and Rabbit Bundrick added lots of depth to the keys. Pete finally slapping on his Strat was fucking incredible - we Who fans were all dismayed at the time because of Townshend's announced abandonment of playing his electric guitar due to tinnitus.
