  1. The final nail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MGLD3yhYkU
  2. Also, SRV opened for, and then kicked Robert Plant's ass around the same time in Toronto.
  3. I somewhat disagree with going the Greatest Hits route with Aerosmith. I believe their first four albums are must owns (for fans and the curious). Rocks and Toys in particular are as good as 70's rock albums get or got, plus the songs aren't chopped, like say "Sweet Emotions" is on the red hits album.
  4. I was at the show too with dogatthestation's brother. I can't remember if there was an opener, but I don't think there was one. Great show even if Pete was recovering from impaling his hand with his whammy bar after doing a windwill in Buffalo two nights before.
  5. Aerosmith, Get Your Wings, Rocks, Toys in the Attic and even parts of Draw the Line are all generally excellent, but Rocks and Toys are their career high-points. I don't like any "new Aerosmith".
  6. However, Steven Tyler begat Liv Tyler, so that might give Aerosmith the edge.
  7. AC/DC all the way. They were more important in the 70's, better that the Toxic Twins in the 80's and can can out-rock them now. Even in the early 80's, AC/DC never lost their way, even with a new lead singer. And AC/DC didn't need to collaborate with a rap band to resurrect their career either. They never brought in cheeseball songwriter and producer Desmond Child to polish their songs into sure-fire radio-friendly fodder either. And AC/DC doesn't have albums as bad as Night in the Ruts, Rock in a Hard Place and everything after Pump. And AC/DC is AC/DC, even if it's new. There are clearly two Aerosmiths: "old Aerosmith" (anything before Permanent Vacation, but specifically anything before the band started to splinter, around the time of Live Bootleg from 1978) and "new Aerosmith", (Permanent Vacation and on). And, AC/DC hasn't tried to get a hit by re-writing the same ballad (at least) four times: "Angel" begat "What it Takes", "Cryin'", "Crazy" and "Amazing". And Angus and Malcom Young are a more explosive guitar combo than Joe Perry and Brad Whitford. And Bon Scott could drink the Twins under the table and still manage to do a better cover of "Baby Please Don't Go" while vomitting blood.

    Chili!!!

Veggi chili is for suckers, ground turkey is a good beef substitute and it isn't a carcinogen like beef is. I've actually seen people eat my wife's turkey chili and lasagna and not know the difference. Suckers.
  9. Screw great goals, here's Stan Jonathan vs The Hammer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_LZT9bHK4w
  10. The Bad Dog Theatre on The Danforth, at Broadview (next to the Black Swan) has improv that night - $10. I may be going.

    Chili!!!

I really love beef chili, but substituting ground turkey is almost as good. Turkey lasagna is darn good too.

    Movies?

Anyone seen this yet? I've heard mixed reviews. I loved 3:10 To Yuma. I thought the remake of 3:10 to Yuma was pretty good. I have the original recorded and will watch it this week. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a very good psychological western. Casey Affleck is fantastic and his motivations are suspect. Robert Ford wasn't a whole lot different that the man he killed.

    Movies?

The Assassination of Jesse James just came out on DVD, and I will second the difficult modern western There Will Be Blood.
  14. This album drops Feb. 12th. My review will drop either tomorrow or the next day.
  15. Charlie Sheen's personal life is far funnier than anything on his show.

    Grammy's

I generally like Feist. I'm quite proud of her being 32 and still having chart and video success in a shallow, youth/tart-driven market - and doing so on her own terms, Apple included. Her previous album, Let It Die, is her best because it doesn't suffer from the occasionally annoying whimsical R&B qualities and self-aware vocal style of her latest, The Reminder. All the gals in BSS are unbelievably talented, arguably moreso than the male core members.
  17. That is a great deal for the Sens. Commodore is a solid playoff defenseman and Stillman is one of the more underrated players in the league. Well done. If the Sens can sign one of the two players after the season, then it's still a good deal.

    Robbed

I'm totally shocked reading all this. I'm relieved that all three of you are doing fine. I hope the cops catch the crooks, but first lay a firm beating on them.
  19. R.I.P. Roy. He was an underrated actor. Check out these great films too: Klute, Marathon Man, The Sorcerer, The French Connection, All That Jazz, Mishima, Naked Lunch, RKO 281.
  20. I can tell you that Buddy should not be missed. Slap on his last great album Sweet Tea and come back and talk to me. The guy still has it, even if his hair doesn't.
  21. I stayed at the Best Western near Music Row in Nashville a few years ago. The hotel is only a 10 minute walk from the downtown strip and is far cheaper than the hotels in the more touristy areas: http://www.bestwesterntennessee.com/hotels/best-western-music-row/
  22. Fans of the influential Galaxy 500 and almost as influential Luna you will know this duo. Dean Wareham was the leader of both bands and his girlfriend Britta Phillips was in the last incarnation of Luna. Fans of great guitar-driven pop of the Velvet Underground/Television variety, although cheerier, will love this show. Tickets are $16 at Rotate This and Soundscapes, bless their anti-Tickemaster souls.
  23. I remember Mayer in the Much environment shredding it up in front of a legion of dismayed teens and pre-teens during one of his first post Top 40 tours a number of years ago. I didn't like the music too much, but I appreciated the shred.
  24. Nice article from Feschuck today on the deal: Shaq trade puzzling for the Suns Shaq has `something to prove' The acquisition of Shaquille O'Neal represents a large gamble, literally and figuratively, for the Phoenix Suns, who are banking tens of millions of dollars on a soon-to-be-36-year-old who wouldn't seem to fit into anything the team wants to do.Feb 07, 2008 04:30 AM Dave Feschuk It's a head-scratcher, to be sure: Shaquille O'Neal's arrival in Phoenix is a bit like human molasses being added to the Suns' free-running table salt. As birthday cake mixes go – and Steve Nash, Phoenix's Victoria-raised point guard, will be blowing out the candles on 34 today – it's not exactly appetizing. The 300-something-pound O'Neal has bursitis in his left hip. He's got a related thigh problem and a knee problem and he'll be 36 next month. In other words, one call to Roger Clemens' doctor and he's a shoo-in for finals MVP! Seriously, though, as much as this trade doesn't make sense for the Suns on the floor, it probably makes their locker room a happier place and not only because O'Neal's a laugh-a-minute entertainer. If you saw Nash in Toronto earlier this season, speaking in a sad drone while sipping a post-game beer from a Gatorade cup on a night they'd blown out the Raptors, you might have surmised that, for all the wins they were piling up, all wasn't well in Phoenix. "Sometimes I have to be careful, because I can take the joy out of the game, because I'm critical," Nash said on that December evening. "And I have to careful not to lose that passion and joy." It was only the latest in a line of suggestions that the Suns, for all their success – and they were playing .708 ball when they made this deal – were grappling with chemistry problems that were going to block their pursuit of a title. "We're a bit selfish," Nash said back in April, in the lead-up to a playoff run that ended in the Western semifinal. "We're a little bit woe-is-me right now." Shawn Marion, shipped to Miami with Marcus Banks for the big lug, is the prototypical woe-is-me athlete. He complained he was under-rated (because, you know, he is merely tied for the 12th-highest salary in the league at $16.4 million U.S.). He appeared to seriously believe that he deserved consideration for league MVP, even though two of his teammates – Nash, a two-time winner of the trophy, and Amare Stoudemire – were ahead of him in line for team MVP. Still, Marion, quick and athletic and long, was the perfect on-court fit for the Suns, a far better fit than O'Neal, who was averaging a career-low 14.2 points per game this season with last-place Miami. In the end, in the desert, selfishness and ego trumped teamwork and good sense. It'll be said that the Suns were simply keeping up with their division rival L.A. Lakers, who became championship contenders last week when they landed big man Pau Gasol. And maybe there's some truth to the notion that Phoenix was, in part, acquiring O'Neal to keep him away from the Dallas Mavericks. But Marion had been asking out for a while now. What the Suns once hoped to get in the deal (Kevin Garnett) and what they got are two very different animals. This isn't to say it's impossible that O'Neal won't add something in Arizona. Maybe he'll be the physical presence they've required for so long. Still, it's hard to be a believer until there's documented evidence O'Neal can regularly get over half court before Nash leads a fast break, heaves a three-ball, tucks his hair behind his ears, secures the offensive rebound, dribbles it out, fixes his hair again, waves to his yoga teacher in the crowd, jacks up another three that swishes and – nice of you to join us, Shaq! – starts running back on defence. Happy birthday, Steve. Careful lighting the candles near the Big Aristotle's new oxygen tank. Breakdown of yesterday's big deal PHOENIX GETS ... Shaquille O'Neal Stats and stuff Will be 36 next month, hasn't played since Jan.21 (hip), owed $40 million (all figures U.S.) and two years after this on contract. Pedigree Won four NBA championships, three with Los Angeles, one with Heat. The skinny Will Suns be able to adjust run-and-gun style to suit his more plodding skills; how much does he have left to give? MIAMI GETS ... Shawn Marion Stats and stuff Is 29 years old, can opt out of contract at end of season or be paid $17.2 million next season, averages 15.8 points, 8.9 rebounds per game. Pedigree Great finisher in Suns' fast-break game; has never been past conference finals. The skinny Can he create his own shot well enough to play without Steve Nash setting him up, shooting 34 per cent from the arc this season. Marcus Banks Stats and stuff The 26-year-old guard still has three years and about $13.2 million left on contract; buried on bench in Phoenix. Pedigree Generally considered a free-agent bust with the Suns, can't crack rotation. The skinny Not sure how he fits in Miami scheme but might allow Heat to move an excess guard like Jason Williams. - Compiled by Doug Smith
