  1. Coming Through Slaughter is a fascinating novella based on the life of turn of the century jazz pioneer, Buddy Bolden. I love the structure and style of the prose, which intentionally resembles improv and free-form. A must-read for all music fans.
  2. He has no respect for Canadian hockey or our players, he thinks Crosby is overrated, he's a selfish player, he floats like a butterfly and stings like a butterfly, he won't learn Englsh and refuses to embrace North American culture. Oh yeah, he's also a gutless coward. In other words, my kind of player.
  3. Nice playoffs Alexander Semin, you fucking spoiled cowardly and useless piece of garbage. Now, back to hating the Habs.
  4. I hate the Habs with an unholy passion, but not as much as I hate Alexander Semin. Go Habs.
  5. I'm off that night, but I might be seeing them in Ottawa. Great venue. Members of the Frames tour with the Swell Season, so this should have a good mix of both.

    Treme

I haven't watched it yet, but thankfully the episodes are on TMN On Demand in HD, so a marathon will be happening soon.
  7. I think the great Les Nessman said it best after he interrupted Venus tutoring a young gang-banger in a memorable scene from WKRP in Cincinnati: Les: If the Beatles are the construct of modern music - and I use that word "construct" incorrectly - surely they were given birth to by Elvis Presley, a giant for sure, but the product of the black experience. Ergo - and I use that word correctly - blacks created modern music! Scratch an Allman Brother, and you have black. Scratch Billy Joel [pronounced Joe-well], and you have Howling Wolf! I could go on, but my mother is in town. Let's just say that every white rock and roll musician working today should take half of his or her paycheck and mail it directly to Chuck Berry. At least that's what I think, and I won't even go into jazz. Arnold, enjoy your visit to the station. Venus, nice visiting with you too! (He waves goodbye enthusiastically and exits.)
  8. Robert Johnson "borrowed" from Son House and stole his soul-selling legend from Tommy Johnson (who was another of his big influences). Blues box-scales on the guitar were shaped from slave plantation hollers. It all comes back to the blues, at least it once did. Old folk isn't any different with the borrowing of old folk melodies and traditions. Joni's bitterness has poisoned her judgement if not her big mouth. And she's gone after the wrong Dylan anyway. Jacob is the real fake.
  9. And I was thinking this topic was going to be about Heather Locklear's recent hit-and-run arrest. I'm surprised cops found her given she no longer resembles... Heather Locklear.
  10. I prefer the Gervais podcasts too, but I like that the animated version has given the series another life and a different audience. I do love the way they drew Merchant, especially with his big grin.
  11. My friend is getting lawns today. I am going since I've never seen Rush and Moving Pictures was their last important album.
  12. I have June 1st booked off and I'm going to the show. Can't wait.
  13. This will be one of rare times when I'll be drinking the same beer before, during and after a concert.
  14. Well, at least the beer will be darn good, however delicious Tankhouse often leaves a powerful hangover.
  15. I'm actually curious to see if Robert Randolph is indeed going downhill. I do think the Arcade Fire will be a tough act to beat; they are one of the best live bands I've ever seen.
  16. I think I'll be at the fest on the weekend of the 10th. I'd like to see THS, Swell Season and Bobby in his jean shorts.
  17. That's a hell of a double bill. Beer will be flowing for sure.
  18. I know lots of "suckers" still buying CDs, especially at concerts. Indie bands make a nice percentage of their pocket money while on tour selling their swag at shows. I bought the Von Bondies latest CD from Jason Stollsteimer himself before their show last year; I always bought nero swag and I usually like to pick up LPs at whatever smaller show I happen to be at (Cuff the Duke, Swell Season etc...) since the dough goes directly to the band. I think it's wrong for me to buy a CD from a working band and then burn off copies for friends.
  19. Yes Hamilton, me too. I also like leaving my place from time to time and shopping for books in a real live bookstore. Online book shopping is offered mainly through mega stores, ones with an agenda.
  20. I am one that can't be bothered to learn how to use torrents via file sharing networks. But then again, I like shopping for and buying CDs. And I don't endorse letting folks burn my CDs, unless they are big bands or artists that a friend might never listen to. I fucking hate it when I buy some new music and one particular friend of mine comes sniffing around my CD collection looking for some free music. Fuck that shit. I'm not a fucking library.
  21. I'm not a Leafs fan. However, I do keep more than a passing eye on their plight.
  22. Well, you do like the Hamilton Bulldykes.
  23. I find your gay imagery slightly insensitive given Burke's tragic situation with his son.
  24. He's nothing like Wince. He bangs, plays hurt and gets double and triple-teamed, and his mom doesn't have a choice parking spot nor did his mom lobby to get a statue made for him. He also didn't go to his graduation on the same day as a playoff game nor did he admit to quitting on Toronto during a TV inteview with John Thompson. I want to gut Carter like the pig he is.
