    The Hold Steady

Love their lyrics!! I was just chuckling along to Chillout Tent: there was a stage and a PA up in western massachuttes, and the kids came from miles around to get messed up on the music. and she drove down from Boden with a carload of girlfriends, to meet some boys and maybe eat some mushrooms and they did and she got sick and now she's pinned and way too shaky. she don't wanna tell the doctor everything she's taken the paramedics hovered over her like a somber mourning family they gave her activating charcoal, they flooded her with saline her: "I got really hot and then I came to in the chillout tent, they gave me oranges and cigarettes." he was rough around the edges: he'd been to school, but never finished, he'd been to jail, but never prison. it was his first day off in forever, man the festival seemed like a pretty good plan, cruise some chicks and get a sun-tan. and his friend gave him four, but said only take one, but then he got bored and ended up taking all four. ah, so now my man ain't that bored anyways, the paramedics found him: he was shaking on the side of the stage. him: "Everything was spinning and I came to in the chillout tent, they gave me oranges and cigarettes." her: "I got really hot and then I came to in the chillout tent" both: "They gave us oranges and cigarettes." she looked just like a baby bird, all new and wet and trying to light a Parliament he quoted her some poetry, he's Tennyson in denim and sheepskin. he looked a lot like Izzy Stradlin. they started kissing when the nurses took off their IVs, it was kinda sexy, but it was kinda creepy. their mouths were fizzy with the cherry cola, they had the privacy of bedsheets and all the other kids were mostly in comas. her: "He was kinda cute, we kinda kicked it in the chillout tent, and I never saw that boy again." him: "She was pretty cool, we kinda kicked in the chillout tent, and I never saw that girl again." her: "He was kinda cute, we kinda kicked it in the chillout tent, and I never saw that boy again." him: "She seemed pretty cool, we kinda kicked it in the chillout tent, and I never saw that girl again."

Forgot to post this... link to review w/pictures and mp3s of the whole show: http://mockingmusic.blogspot.com/2006/11/hold-steady-live.html
  5. One the brightside, we moved up past Boston in the standings!! A point is a point baby. No I'm not ignorning the issues, but it's not gonna help the team to dwell on them either. Take the point and move on to the next game.

I was definitely boozy. But I think the band's reputation precedes them a bit... sure they drank beer on stage but it was an otherwise professional performance. Maybe it was the Sunday night. I was surprised at how melodic a band they are. I got more of a classic rock vibe from Separation Sunday but I was totally offbase. The show gave me a whole new appreciation for them.
  7. That was my understanding as well. But like dinghy said, maybe the Sens figured they'd give it a shot to see if he'd change his mind.

Has anyone picked up their new album, Boys and Girls in America? I've been listening to it for the past two weeks and I just realized I love every song on the album. Fack is it ever good!! Check 'em out. The show at Zaphods was great too.
  9. Did anyone go? Christine and I got there around 4pm on Saturday. There were two massive lines outside the building: one for ticket holders, one for those without (that would be us). With nothing better to do we stood in line for about 45 minutes before our lined moved at all. 10 minutes later more people were let in. But about 30 minutes after that (close to 6pm now) we were informed that if we didn't have a ticket we weren't getting in. SOLD OUT!! We left bitterly disappointed but I've learned two lessons for next year: 1. Buy your ticket in advance 2. Get there at 1pm
  10. Hell yeah! Wish I'd seen it. Why so many crappy fixtures on Sportsnet these past few weeks?
  11. I can confirm that tickets are available at Mavericks. I got mine on Saturday.
  12. You can always count on John for at least one gem along these lines:
  13. Albert & Bay is a great choice. Friends of ours stayed there in the summer and the room was huge -- balcony too. There's also a decent restaurant and pub on the ground floor.
  14. You might like it more if you spread out the 12 initial listenings. Give each listening a chance to breath. If I listened to any album that many times in a weekend I'd probably put it away for a long time before I wanted to listen to it again.
  15. Sorry, didn't mean to imply that Kev, that was meant in relation to my own hockey knowledge. Not that I don't spout of my arrogant opinions from time to time, I just recognize them as such... sometimes.
  16. I think most fans (myself included) know shit about hockey and grasp at straws to try to express situations they don't understand. If it's not "change the captain" it's "this team needs more grit" or "this team needs more veteran presence". I don't get to see the players and what goes on nearly as much as the coaches and staff who work for the team. To pretend my opinion on the matter is even close to their level of expertise would be the height of arrogance. So I'm just gonna watch the games, cheer on my team and let the chips lie where they fall.
  17. I'm not picky. I think most places make a great greasy breakfast. It's gotta be the hardest meal for any restaurant to fuck up.
  18. On this one, yes. My prediction? Even if Alfie gets traded Kanada Kev is still going to blame him for all of Ottawa's problems.
  19. I've only been once years ago and have been meaning to return but something always came up! I had a blast the one time I went. It's a big drunkfest under the glare of a totally lit up Congress Centre. It's like drinking in a mall. Was pretty messy towards closing and it developed a meat market vibe. And towards the end I was getting free drinks from some of the vendors trying to unload stock. There is beer, wine and liquor. And the food is great if you want to take a break. So yeah... if you like the salacious you definitely want in on this. (I wonder if the festival organizers would like to use my testimonial for next year. )
