Cully
My family would like to get away over the Christmas holidays for a ski trip. The resort must have cross-country skiing, and we must be able to drive there..I have been to Mt. Tremblant (sp?) before, but I found it super crowded and way too icey!!! Any suggestions? Birdy
Ellicottville, NYIt's relatively close to Toronto and doesn't get ridiculously super-crowded, but i haven't been there over the holidays. Though I'd be inclined to think that ski resorts are pretty busy places during the holiday season.
Cully
I know that all ski resorts will be busy over Christmas, but Mt. Tremblant was rediculous...30 min lines! Tnanks for the suggestion Birdy. Edited November 17, 2005 by Guest
M
cully - go to vermont... we've always skiied Stowe there, or some of the other surrounding mountains and enjoyed. plus, VT is beautiful and there are some really nice places to stay. AD
stowe is great.. sugarbush and smuggler's notch are great places for a fam. vacation.. And Jay Peak is a great place if you want to lean more towards good terrain and snow... Nothing else to do other than ride / ski, but I think the hill makes up for it. Plus it's sooo close. Less than two hours from Montreal, I think it's about 7 miles inside the US border.Depends how much you want a ski vacation vs. a vacation with some skiing.AD
Large Marge
My fam used to always hit up Mount Sutton (in the Eastern Townships)... it used to be the most beautiful and least busy of the Quebec resorts. We're talking a few years back now though so you better make sure it hasn't been commercially raped by Intrawest or anything.
Schwa.
if you want to stay close, Talisman is decent and not nearly as busy as Blue Mountain. Doesn't have the elevation of course but there are several challenging runs and several not so tough (for the fam)
phunkyb
We always went to Jay Peak or Elicottville...great choices.

CyberHippie
Hey let us know what you find!I'm trying to decide on an xmas getaway myself... I'm more in the mode of warm, I'd love to go to Belize or something like that. But seems like you'd need a travel agent to go there? So a ski trip is another option. questcequecest?
I further recommend Vermont. I've only been to Stowe and Killington, but there's all kinds of other places to chose from too. I always heard nice things about Sunday River, ME too... check it out

Weirdness
I agree that Vermont is a great idea. If you want to avoid the US, Mount St. Anne in Quebec is a great family oriented place to go and I'm sure has a ton of cross country options as well. It's not as huge as Tremblant, but the runs are great and won't bore you if you're there for a week or so. If you do get bored, there's also a place calles Le Massif which is close by and supposed to be quite nice as well...
