DevO
For my girlfriend. Any leads?? She is looking for something downtown or Glebe area. Probably somehting in the range of $700-$800, for a one-bedroom. Thanks for any help that may be out there!
Northern Wish
7-800 doesn't get much in the Glebe. I'd recommend taking a walk and writing down numbers, for whatever reason it is much cheaper to find a place that way here rather than Craigs or Kijiji.I just rented my own one br in October and had trouble with anything less than about $900 as they were substandard to say the least. Its $950 all inclusive, but its not in the Glebe.Check around 5th Ave as I have seen a number of signs up between Bank and Bronson in that area.Any q's?S
Blane
shit, glebe has changed since I was paying 999 for a nice 3 bedroom on Powell Ave!
slavetothegroove
That's weird, a friend just e-mailed me yesterday stating the exact same thing. That her girlfriend was looking for a 1 bdrm apt, in the glebe/downtown/little italy area, for that same price. I'll keep an eye out and post if I see any signs... Northern Wish
Its a weird market...... By spending $1000 instead of $800 the market opens up considerably. I noticed a huge difference in between even $800 and $900. Remember when negotiating that landlords are really happy just to fill units in the current economic climate, so you should try to deal a bit. I found my place at $1000 + heat- but got him to $950 included saving me over $200 a month all winter!

AWeeJig
I just grabbed a 1bdrm. in Centretown. Not the nicest of areas by any means, but perfect location for me when it comes to my job. It's $725+ hydro (which is $50/month max.) The Glebe is pretty over priced I found for the most part. I think you pay a little extra just to have the right to say you reside in 'The Glebe'
phorbesie
I think you pay a little extra just to have the right to say you reside in 'The Glebe' not for me....i LOVE the neighbourhood...the houses, parks, shops, restaurants all nearby within a few blocks. it's like a bubble you never need to go downtown! Freeker
KevO you're title is misleading, I got my hopes up that you were moving to Ottawa. At that price range she might even have trouble finding something in Centretown. Here are some links I've used in the past;http://www.247apartments.com/rentals/Ontario/Ottawa.asphttp://ottawa.en.craigslist.ca/apa/http://ottawa.kijiji.ca/f-housing-apartments-for-rent-W0QQCatIdZ37http://www.ccochousing.org/http://www.247apartments.com/rentals/Ontario/Ottawa.asphttp://ottawa.rentershotline.ca/http://www.ottawaliving.ca/ottawa-rental-listings-search.phphttp://www.rentboard.ca/rentals/index.aspx?locid=4617http://www.viewit.ca/city/ottawa.aspxAlso tell her to check out Ottawa U, Carelton and Algonguin. They all have places where they post apartments, that where you'll find the cheap spots.Hope this helpsPS - Glebe rules!!

DevO
Thanks for the tips folks! She's upping her spending range to $900-$1000 tops I think. KevO you're title is misleading, I got my hopes up that you were moving to Ottawa. Well now that you mention it.. I am currently on the lookout for a job in your fine city. phorbesie
it's not as "safe" as other areas...break-ins are pretty common (just going on what i've heard from friends)
ollie
KevO, has your friend considered the Sandy Hill area? It's close to the market but also very residential.
Northern Wish
Centertown is not a nice place to be ~IF~ you have a car you are going to be parking on the street, you have a bbq or a bike, or are a female walking alone at nights..... Especially around Dundonald Park.Keep your valuables inside your place and you should be alright however- its not break and enters into houses, just petty crime type stuff. There is a really nice CCOC place at Gilmour and Bay that I lived in. Its a small 3 BR for about $1050 a month if you can get one.S
Freeker
Centretown is the "nutmeat" of downtown Ottawa. Its very safe for the most part, just some crazy crackies. Tell her to try and stick between Elgin St. and Bronson Ave the closer to Elgin the better and between Gladstone and Sommerset, but there are nice pockets outside of that too. For 1000 bucks she'll find something great in Centretown. At that price she can also check out; WestboroHintonburgSandy Hill

AD
it's not as "safe" as other areas...break-ins are pretty common (just going on what i've heard from friends)about 99% of my ottawa friends live in centretown and have for years and haven't had any problems relating to break-ins. although the most common property crime in somerset ward is indeed break and enter. (the most common property crime in the glebe is also break and enter).but it's ottawa - the city is safe, period.there are more crackheads in centretown than in the glebe, but you're better off in centretown than in vanier, lowertown, the market, south end, herongate etc.bike theft is rampant in this city though. bouche
bike theft is rampant in this city though. even car thieves have gone green in ottawa!
Ms.Huxtable
I was broken into when I lived in Centertown. The guy didn't take anything but I knew someone was there because my screen had been slashed and my window was open. A few weeks later I figured out WHY I was boroken into. My phone bill had a sh*t load of calls to "976" numbers.I'd rather he took my TV then jerked off in my bed. I moved quickly after that.
