localcrew
OTTAWA — Ottawa police had to call in the National Capital Commission to help rescue a deer that wandered into the Rideau Canal near the Pretoria bridge.Police received a call earlier Friday after a deer was spotted in the Hawthorne Avenue area, but at around 12 p.m., reports came in of a deer in the canal."It's swimming around," said Sgt. Mike Haarbosch."We're just enlisting the help of the NCC, trying to wrangle it. We're waiting for some resources to get down there," he said.Shortly after 1 p.m. they managed to get the deer in a boat, according to a witness. The deer was taken by truck to be released in the Mer Bleue area, says NCC spokesman Jean Wolff.Haarbosch said police did not have to close down any roads in the vicinity. The operation was being handled from the Queen Elizabeth Driveway side of the canal.© Copyright © The Ottawa Citizen
