President Barack Obama has now decided he will NOT release the ultra-gory photos of Osama bin Laden's bloody, bullet-ridden face to the public.

The news comes in the wake of reports that Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Hillary Clinton had advised Obama about concerns that releasing a photograph could prompt a backlash against the U.S.

Obama told "60 Minutes" ... "The risks of release outweigh the benefits" ... adding, "Conspiracy theorists around the world will just claim the photos are doctored anyway, and there is a real risk that releasing the photos will only serve to inflame public opinion in the Middle East."

Obama continued, "Imagine how the American people would react if al-Qaida killed one of our troops or military leaders, and put photos of the body on the internet."

"Osama bin Laden is not a trophy -- he is dead and let's now focus on continuing the fight until al-Qaida has been eliminated."

Even if Mendenhall is wrong -- really, really wrong -- it doesn't make him a bad guy. In fact, at the core of what he said, there's a seed of love and compassion. He spoke against hate and judgment.

He believes some unpopular things. That's it. I know that I cheer everyday for athletes with whom I would not agree on political or ethical issues, and you probably do the same. In fact, if you're a sports fan at all, it's overwhelmingly likely that you have cheered for guys who have broken actual laws and hurt actual people.

I think this should apply to more than just athletes... politicians too?

'Churchgoing residents of Howth, Co Dublin, were bewildered to see Osama bin Laden listed for two memorial services in their parish newsletter yesterday morning. The Catholic Church in the seaside town had named the terrorist - shot dead by US navy seals in a heavily-fortified compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, last Sunday - among those to whom it planned to devote a Mass. In addition to carrying information about upcoming communions and confirmations, the Church of the Assumption newsletter also contained a brief announcement which read: "Osama Bin Laden (recently deceased)", adding that the man who had topped America's most wanted list for more than a decade was scheduled to have two Masses said in his honour next Thursday at 8am and 10am. The information was also carried, without any further explanation or clarification, on the church's website...

'However, a spokeswoman for the Dublin archdiocese expressed surprise that such a Mass would be scheduled. She subsequently confirmed that it was a hoax. She said someone had telephoned the church last week asking that two services to be dedicated to the infamous al-Qaeda leader's memory. His name had been taken without question by a church official and included on the list for upcoming prayers without the sanction of parish priest Msgr Brendan Houlihan' - The Irish Times.
