  1. Well that's mighty foolish, innit? It never was an Espanola gig to begin with. It is the RETURN OF THE MIGHTY JAWBONE and must always be stated as such, in capital letters. Paisley I would ask you to please remedy the situation, please and thanks.
  2. There are a couple in the works for September, so keep your eyes peeled buddy. Thanks man...here's a link to the Abbreeves' myspace which I omitted above.
  3. Alright folks, here it comes... Tomorrow night, Wed July 30, I'll be playing dobro, banjo and pedal steel with Nick Rose & The Magnolias at Tranzac. The band is usually electric but we re-tooled for a festival on Manatoulin Island last Saturday. We spent Thursday and Friday in a cabin in Kilarney with no electricity, adapting all of Nick's tunes to an acoustic setup. I mostly played dobro and a bit of 5-string banjo; the bass player played upright; the drummer played a small kit; and the two guitarists and keyboardist traded off on two acoustics and a mandolin. We're aiming to bring the same down-home bluegrassified show to the Tranzac gig tomorrow (though I'll also bring my steel) and we hope you'll like what we do. Set time 10pm, PWYC. The same band, but back to our old electric ways, will also play the Dakota next week, on Tuesday Aug 5. Then on Friday Aug 8, I'll play with my new solo outfit Espanola inside a rad shop on James Street North in Hamilton called Mixed Media. This will go down during the monthly Art Crawl and it will be a blast. It's free to get in and we're celebrating an art show of my friend Amy Kenny's paintings that will begin that night at Mixed Media. I'll be backed by Nick Dika (Arkells) on bass, Mike Ventimiglia (Mississippi Kings) on guitar, and Bryce Clark (Killin Time) on drums. [How's this for mind-blowing: this gig has been booked for over a month. I just found out today that Mixed Media - 174 James Street North - occupies the same space as a store called Deluxe Menswear that was owned and operated by my great-grandfather beginning in the 1920's. Unreal.] Anyway, two days later the same outfit will play the second stage at the Festival of Friends in Hamilton's Gage Park. Set time is 2pm and admission is free. We'll take a week off and then play at Casbah in Hamilton on Tues Aug 19, opening the CD release show for my buddies in the Abbreviations. They're awesome and their new record sounds great. Young guys, full of heart and soul, and rock. In between the Fest of Friends and the Abbreevs show, though, you all in Toronto and Hamilton will bear witness to the return of the mighty Jawbone, as we play the Supermarket in Toronto on Thursday Aug 14 and Pepper Jack's in Hamilton on Fri Aug 15. Both shows will be with Little Foot Long Foot and the Northwest Division. We'll play early in Toronto, late in Hamilton, don't friggin miss it, I love playing in this band and it's a whole different world from everything else I do (I don't play any steel). We'll also play at Sonic Orchard on Friday Aug 22. Ok let's recap: Wed Jul 30 - Nick Rose & The Magnolias (acoustic and bluegrassy) at Tranzac, Toronto Tue Aug 5 - Nick Rose & The Magnolias (all electric country-rock awesome) at Dakota Tavern, Toronto Fri Aug 8 - Espanola at Mixed Media, 174 James Street North, Hamilton Sun Aug 10 - Espanola at Festival of Friends, Stage 2, Gage Park, Hamilton (set time 2pm) Thu Aug 14 - Jawbone at Supermarket, Toronto Fri Aug 15 - Jawbone at Pepper Jack's, Hamilton Tue Aug 19 - Espanola at Casbah, Hamilton Fri Aug 22 - Jawbone at Sonic Orchard, Kimbercote Farm, near Collingwood Holy shit that's a lot of gigs! You should probably just come to all of them, thanks!
  4. Edger...that's a bummer...for what it's worth though, if enough of y'all could get your asses in the room by 10 o'clock, we could put the openers on earlier and then we could get on around 11! That was our "best case scenario". So everybody move your plans up an hour, get the dang bar on time, so we can have a shit-kickin hoedown and get to bed before the sun comes up, y'hear?
  5. Prakash John is killer. Jordan is his kid and is an unreal all-around musician. This group will probably slay.
  6. Mister H, do you know these guys? They're buddies of mine. An unreal band in their own right, they've acted as my backing band for my solo project Espanola before. Also worth mentioning that I'm also playing both of those nights with NWD. The bill for both shows includes my band Jawbone - which features Adam Melnick (kookycanooky), Cam Malcolm (ex-Sweet Homewreckers), and Pete Hall (ex-Northern Chorus) - and Little Foot Long Foot who will be fresh from a length East coast tour.
  7. I don't know if we have any board members/readers from the prairies, but if anybody is headed to the shows this week in Winnipeg, Calgary or Edmonton, look out for my buddies the Arkells opening up. You will love them.
  8. Old(er) Toronto fogies, please to confirm or deny this random pseudo-fact that is swimming around in my brain: the building on the north-west corner of Yonge and Davenport (Masonic Temple, Concert Hall, etc) was once the Rockpile, where Led Zeppelin made their Toronto debut in 1969. What say youse?
  9. Just came from a quick rehearsal with Tom. He's got Colin Cripps on guitar tonight...the band is sounding great...looking forward to playing with these dudes.
  10. Kev-O (and everybody)... If you make it down for 5:30, I'm playing with my new solo project Espanola on the indie stage. Same band that played Frontier Town on the weekend. Then I'll be sitting in with Tom for a few tunes on pedal steel at 8:30.
  11. Like Mark was saying, Stumbleweed has unfortunately had to cancel...some Diesel Dog gigs got in the way. But I'll be up there nonetheless, playing Sunday night with my very countrified solo project, Espanola. Pretty excited for you folks to hear what I've been up to.
  12. http://youtube.com/watch?v=FONt47Z0KZg Meredith Brooks ("I'm A Bitch") shits the bed on the guitar solo too, it's a sad few minutes of music television. In fairness, though, the band actually cooks pretty good.
  13. I play guitar and pedal steel in the Regrets. We start at 10:30, Matthew Barber to follow (unsure if with band or not). Here's a BradM recording of us from Dekcuf in Ottawa at the end of our East coast tour, April 12 of this year: http://www.archive.org/details/dangriffin2008-04-12.oktava.shnf You should come check it! Thanks!
  14. Yeah man, we were left of that aisle! Crazy.
  15. The last time they were at Massey I literally scored front row centre seats for 6 of us on the day of the show, must have been some corporate order that was dropped or something. Anyway while the show was awesome I remember being disappointed at having paid 50 bucks and they played for about 65 minutes. No matter though, I think my plan this time is to see both Toronto and Hamilton! Sweet.
  16. I played at the Now Lounge last night and then dropped into the Elmo for a drink with my buddies in Arkells who had played earlier. Brant Bjork and the Bros were on and were slaying a full downstairs Mocambo with stoner rockitude. Was upstairs for a bit though couldn't even make my way into the house from backstage while Soundclash was playing...too overpacked and hot...they sounded like they were killing it though. Dine Alone Records knows how to throw a party!
  17. No shirts yet...maybe soon. Figured this might garner more attention with a revised thread title...looking forward to these gigs.
  18. Let me tell you a thing or two about the Modern India Buffet. It is both modern and Indian as we shall soon see.
  19. Just imagine if Emmylou Harris had gotten in with Gram Parsons when he was still in the Flying Burrito Brothers, and then George Jones got hip and could pick a mean guitar and came along to join in. That's all the samples you needs, brother!
  20. Chris Gatchene - guitar, vocals Steve Elmo Murphy - guitar, vocals Shelby Kerr - vocals Aaron Goldstein - pedal steel Ike Richardson - electric upright bass Ricky Neu - drums Perhaps this is well-known to most, but it's worth mentioning our other affiliations: you know Chris from the Fat Cats, Steve and Shelby from the Elmo Murphy Band (formerly Friends of Hefner), Ike and Ricky as the unstoppable rhythm section in Diesel Dog, and me...well...I play with a lot of people. Performing covers and originals, nothing but whiskey-fueled alt- and straight country all night long. Lots of twang, lots of two-step, lots of high-lonesome harmony. Appearing: Thu July 17 - Pepper Jack's, Hamilton Sun July 20 - Two Doors Down, Brantford ...and stay tuned for more upcoming dates this summer and fall. Lookin forward to seeing you on the square-dance floor!
