So the Last Waltz reprise that I was hoping for isn't going to pan out. Still looks like a great show though, don't it? http://www.torontosun.com/entertainment/music/2011/03/24/17740686.html 'Love letter to Toronto' theme for Junos The Juno Awards' 40th anniversary show on Sunday at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto (CTV, 8 p.m.) has been dubbed a "Love Letter to Toronto," and will sees current artists pay tribute to Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot and The Band. Arranged by musical director Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), City and Colour will perform Young's Old Man; Sarah Harmer performs Mitchell's Carey; Sarah Slean and Cuddy perform Lightfoot's If You Could Read My Mind; Kevin Hearn performs The Band's The Genetic Method; and Hearn, Derek Miller, Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor, Justin Rutledge, Serena Ryder and The Sadies perform The Band's The Shape I'm In. Garth Hudson of The Band, previously announced as a performer, now won't take part in the 40th anniversary tribute because of illness. Also, Tokyo Police Club is now performing on the broadcast, electronic artist Chilly Gonzales will make a special appearance with host Drake, and Feist has been added as a presenter. The announcements coincide with the release of a new block of tickets for the Junos show ($213.75, $112, $62.25), which are on sale at Ticketmaster, ticketmaster.ca or 1-855-985-5000. The ducats were released after the stage was constructed at the ACC.
  3. I thought some of you might be interested. I saw Girma Wolde Michael sit in on sax with the Ethio Jazz Stars in January in a smokey dark basement club in Addis Ababa. He was a great performer, and I was glad to find out later that he's actually based in Toronto. Gonna be good! I love this poster too: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=179957272043449 Friday March 25, 2011 • The Music Gallery presents ETHIO T.O. featuring: Girma Wolde Michael’s Ethio Fidel ...+ Canaille with Isla Craig Toronto shows its love for the exotic, pentatonic jazz-funk of Ethiopia and Eritrea Part of the New World Series Co-presented with Batuki Music The Music Gallery, 197 John St. Doors 7pm, concert 8pm Tickets $15 regular, $10 member, senior + student Or $12 advance at Rotate This, Soundscapes & Ticketweb.ca Over the past decade, “The Golden Age†of Ethiopian sounds of the ‘60s and ‘70s has been brought closer to the mainstream by high-profile fans as diverse as Jim Jarmusch, Budos Band and Kanye West, all enchanted by its exotic combination of funky rhythms and eerie pentatonic modes. Artists of that era, most notably Mulatu Astatke, have benefitted from this international attention. Toronto contains the second largest Ethiopian population in North America, and the sounds of Ethiopia and Eritrea hold a special place in the city’s musical landscape. Moreover, the community has a very visible downtown presence in Bloorcourt Village. This is likely a contributing factor in its rich musical traditions resonating with the high concentration of musicians of all stripes living in the neighbourhood. If you’ve experienced a night out in one of Bloor and Ossington’s clubs, chances are you’ve seen bands featuring Girma Wolde Michael. Girma Wolde Michael’s Ethio Fidel A saxophonist who studied with Mulatu Astatke and Getachew Mekuria (who performed in Toronto with The Ex in 2009), Wolde Michael is one of many musicians from the Golden Age residing in the GTA. Girma is the first-call bandleader for visiting stars such as Mahmoud Ahmed, and also leads the Ethio Stars band. He will be drawing from the repertoire of the Golden Age with his Ethio Fidel band for this Music Gallery presentation. Canaille with Isla Craig Canaille is a sympathetic opening act. Jeremy Strachan and his jazz quintet’s debut album Potential Things (Standard Form, 2010) is strongly influenced by Ethiopian horn arrangements and melodies. Now incorporating keyboards which underline its “Eastern†sound, Canaille has finished recording its second disc to be released soon. Joining the band for this show is versatile, globally proficient vocalist Isla Craig.

  10. http://www.smallworldmusic.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94:tony-allen-april-15&catid=35 Anyone else checking this out? I am! 'Without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat' - Fela Kuti An amazing night of Afro-inpsired dancing and performance featuring one of the seminal figures in world music, a unique musical partnership and local musicians and DJs inspired by the legacy of Afrobeat. Tony Allen is one of the greatest drummers on the planet and the man who created Afrobeat alongside Fela Kuti. Twenty-four years after leaving Fela’s band he remains a restless and potent trail blazer for new African musical adventures and an inspiration to musicians around the world. "Fela said I sounded like four drummers," says Allen. If so, it could have been because, in his mature Afrika 70 style, he was drawing on four different styles - highlife, soul/funk, jazz and traditional African drumming. A unique and mighty sound. Continuing to work with top musicians to fuse afrobeat with funk, rock and hip-hop,Tony remains a vital force. Recent releases, such as Secret Agent continue to breathe new life into a legendary career and in 2010 Tony performed at WOMAD as he celebrated his 70th birthday. Tony Allen's keyboard player for this one-time Canadian date, Detroit-based Amp Fiddler is a celebrated soul/funk/electronica musician, singer, songwriter and producer. He is probably best known as part of George Clinton’s Parliament and Funkadelic groups from 1985 until 1996, Fiddler has also worked with Moodymann, Stephanie McKay, Jamiroquai, Prince, Was (Not Was), the Brand New Heavies, Fishbone, Corinne Bailey Rae and nu soul artist Maxwell.
  11. I yoinked Retriever and Cobblestone Runway as per recommendation and have been cranking them all weekend. Great tunes! I am gonna lay down a 40 bone to see his show at Lee's in the Spring.
  12. I agree, that was a horrible set up. Czechoski double dipped - cashing in on the dinner crowd as well as the CMW/music fans at the expense of everyone involved (diners, music fans, servers and musicians were all peeved). I got in early enough that I had a great view for The Barr Brothers and really enjoyed their set. PS - Note the new and more anonymous user name folks!
  13. I have a wrist band! But my friends don't. I'll give em a call.
  14. I caught a litle bit of Cuff the Duke and Gentlemen Husbands last night at the Horseshoe, then stopped in at The Painted Lady (where there was just a naked go go dancer walking around on top of the bar) and the Dakota on the way home. The Sure Things were the surprise band at the Dakota. I read this morning that Ron Sexsmith did a surprise set at the Gladstone. Weekends like this I wish I had one of them smart phones. Some of tonight may include: The Barr Bro's, Russian Futurists, Jakalope, Slowcoaster, Golden Dogs, The Mercy Now, Zoobombs. I'm wondering how quickly Czechoski may become packed tonight.
  15. I tried for pavillion seats for Detroit but no luck.. More lawns!
  16. Anyone buying tickets this morning? I picked up 3 lawns for Blossom Music Centre (Cuyahoga Falls). Had my hands on pavillion seats but they were all the way at the back, far left. Detroit tickets at high noon!
  17. Hey Toronto folks, Any shows on your radars in particular for this CMW weekend? I am out of the loop with what's new and exciting. And feeling old! The one show I was keeping an eye on was The Sadies with special guests, but Bachman & Turner turned me off of that one pretty quick. Kev
  18. Still some cheap seats left..
  19. I'm in! section RSF, row M, seats 49-51
  20. Whoops! By Cincinnati I meant Detroit. And tickets for both Detroit and Cleveland (Cuyahoga Falls) go on sale tomorrow.
  21. I'm hoping to get my tickets (Cleveland and Cincinnati) tomorrow AM.
  22. I'm going to Detroit and Cincinnati. And hopefully Watkins Glen. First Phish show(s) in 7 years!
  23. Paul Simon is one of only a handful that I would shell out (relatively) big bucks for. Hoping to score a few this Friday.
  24. No problem dudes. Looks like it is a well put together doc, Bruce McDonald no less. Kev, check this out too if you haven't seen it: http://torontoist.com/2011/01/historicist_the_hawk_nests_in_toronto.php Who did the pre-show talk at the Levon show, and what was it on? (Was it Rob Bowman?) And how was Levon!??!
