  1. Wish my bunny ears brought in Bravo so I could watch this! http://www.yongestreet.tv/ http://www.bravo.ca/events/yongestreet/ WORLD PREMIERE: MARCH 21, 22 and 23 at 10et/7pt YONGE STREET - Toronto Rock & Roll Stories tells the untold tales of those first steps, with performers revealing, in their own words, their struggles trying to make the scene on Yonge Street, from Rock & Roll's dodgy beginnings in the late 1950s through to 1975, when strip clubs took over Yonge Street and dropped the curtain on this most exciting era of the city's musical and social history. Full of colourful anecdotes and previously unseen and unheard archival material, the 3 x 1 hour series features illuminating, entertaining reminiscences by many of the musicians and performers who were there when it all went down. We share in the stories related by Robbie Robertson (The Band), Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins, Cathy Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Sylvia Fricker (Tyson), John Kay (Steppenwolf), David Clayton-Thomas (Blood, Sweat and Tears), Daniel Lanois, Skip Prokup (Lighthouse). The series captures all the flavour, excitement, and energy of the period when "the Devil's music" stormed white bread Toronto, and Yonge Street became the essential destination for musicians, singers and music fans not only in Toronto but across Canada and beyond. YONGE STREET - Toronto Rock & Roll Stories is a love story about a street, a city, and the Toronto sound - a sound that predates the 1957 night Elvis stormed Maple Leaf Gardens. The stories of YONGE STREET - Toronto Rock & Roll are still reverberating and ricocheting around the world.
  2. The new track sounds great!
  3. Damn, I haven't been back to the Foodies Forum in a while - think this might be the busiest thread I've ever started on jambands! I was looking forward to checking out some of your suggestions... But now that Pizza Gigi is back, I'm all set.
  4. Has anyone ever checked out this Musideum place in Toronto? I recently stumbled across it on the internets and am dying to go and see. I had never heard of it before until it was listed as a venue for an upcoming The Henrys show. http://www.musideum.com/ When you walk into Musideum, you are invited to experience how harmony can arrange the world. We are offering a space for instrument makers, musicians, and listeners, to meet and trade. As well as an extensive collection of traditional intercontinental musical instruments for sale, find rare music books, John Cage scores, recordings, and musical gifts. Learn to play an instrument you have been looking for forever. Discover Erhu, GuZheng, Sitar and Harmonium, Galician Pipes, Nightingale calls, Cigar Box Guitars, and Theremin, Cracklebox, Cajon, Cavaquinho, Fado, Ney, Daf, Riqq, Xaphoon, Stroh Violin, 4thC Qin, 18thC Glass Armonica, 19thC Banjo, mbira, the potent Sansula, and more. We are holding a space for the stunning appreciation of creative music. In our performance series 'Terrain,' we encourage exploration into all musics; folkloric, contemporary composition and media art, songs from each distinct culture, including our own young urban songwriters. Listen to music that integrates cultural aberrations, discovery, silence, cinematic art, and improvisation in all the mothertongues. At Musideum, rare musical instruments and eccentricities on view… an opportunity to touch, play and listen too. The Henrys are playing there tonight. Apparently the venue seats 25. They don't seem to update their site (or FB site) much.
  5. Nevermind. That must be the gig I'm thinking of. Not sure how I decided that it was this week. Sexsmith is one of those artists who I can't seem to leave alone. Rarely does a fortnight pass without listening to at least one of his albums. I've seen him live a handful of times' date=' too; always a good show.[/quote'] He might be around for CMW or the Junos or one of those big events happening month in the big smoke though. I have never had an album! But have seen his show and seen him sit in with others and have always been blown away. I need to spend some more QT with his music. What album would you suggest?
  6. Can you post the deets on those Barr Bro's appearances in Toronto next week?
  7. I missed it. Work has me on lockdown this week. How was this show?
  8. Even better: http://www.luminato.com/media/11 Luminato Announces 2011 Music and Celebrations Program FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TORONTO (March 1, 2011) – Luminato, Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity, today announced the Festival’s 2011 music and celebrations program. The fifth anniversary edition of Luminato introduces a new downtown Festival Hub, marks the return of fan favourites such as Kronos Quartet and Nitin Sawhney, and introduces a diverse line-up of musical artists from around the world. Luminato 2011 presents the Grammy Award-winning, genre-bending Kronos Quartet in four concerts that reflect Kronos’ ongoing global musical journey through cross-cultural collaborations. A series of concerts – including a free outdoor concert – and initiatives with Luminato’s Education and Outreach programs comprise the Kronos Quartet Residency at Luminato 2011. Performing with Kronos for the first time in Canada are international guest artists the Alim Qasimov Ensemble, leading exponents of the Azerbaijani sung poetry known as mugham; Afghan rubâb player Homayun Sakhi; and Wu Man, whose virtuosity on the ancient Chinese pipa has won that instrument a new place in the modern musical world. The Kronos Quartet also performs a free concert at Metro Square on June 12. Following last year’s critically acclaimed TSO Goes Late Night: Beethoven Symphony 9, Luminato and the TSO partner to present TSO Goes Late Night: Mahler 5, a concert of Gustav Mahler’s epic “Symphony No. 5,†conducted by TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian. This audience-wide party with TSO musicians, guest artists, and live music takes place on June 18 at Roy Thomson Hall, and includes a post-concert reception in the lobby. For the first time in the Festival’s history, Luminato's free music program inhabits one central, downtown location for the entire 10 days of the Festival. From June 10-19, Metro Square, located at the corner of King Street West and John Street, is transformed into Luminato’s Festival Hub, serving as the home to nightly free concerts, a variety of interactive events, and the return of President’s Choice® 1000 Tastes of Torontoâ„¢, where more than 70 chefs prepare a decadent assortment of gourmet street food from around the world. Free concerts at the Festival Hub cover a wide spectrum of musical genres and styles, ranging from an opening night concert featuring Montreal-based trip rock artists Beast and Halifax-based rockers The Joel Plaskett Emergency, to a musical tribute to the Italy 150 celebrations, to a rare performance of Egyptian pop music sensation Hakim, to a concert by bhangra superstar Malkit Singh, to a performance by k.d. lang of her upcoming album Sing it Loud. On Friday, June 17, Luminato presents multi-award-winning singer/songwriter k.d. lang. Winner of four Grammys and eight Junos, k.d. lang has consistently defied conventional categorization. From her early-career reinvention of country rock with a dash of punk, to her stunning covers of standards by artists such as Leonard Cohen and Roy Orbison, elements of torch song, jazz and even bossa nova have found their way into a style she has made uniquely her own—a style as elegant and sophisticated as it is impassioned. k.d. lang kicks off the Canadian leg of her tour at Luminato’s Festival Hub. “Luminato’s free celebrations are the heart of the Festival,†said Janice Price, CEO of Luminato. “We are tremendously pleased that, for the entire Festival, Metro Square will be home to free concerts, a Festival box office, a gourmet street food fair, and a host of other free, participatory events. Luminato 2011 celebrates 10 days of free creativity in a centrally located, outdoor public space.†“Over the past four years, Luminato has presented a diverse musical program, ranging from world music stars, to renowned orchestral ensembles, to Canadian pop and folk icons,†said Chris Lorway, Artistic Director of Luminato. “Now, celebrating the Festival’s fifth year, Luminato presents a music program that runs the gamut of musical genres, representing artists from all over the world, as well as those here at home.â€

That's a pretty good sell! I will look out for their shows. Doesn't seem to be any on the immediate horizon though.
  11. Hey all! With the recent, tragic bust of my longtime favourite, PIZZA GIGI, I feel so lost. Link to hilarious story: http://www.blogto.com/eat_drink/2011/02/pizza_gigi_shut_down_after_drug_raid/ A friend of mine swears by The Big Slice and I do like it, however they do not deliver past 6:00 PM. Where do you get your pie???
  12. That's a doozy of a lineup! I can't believe that happened to Lanois. Brutal.
  13. Throw in some more bozos and we're all set!
  14. Ontario plans to loosen liquor laws at festivals http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/ontario/ontario-plans-to-loosen-liquor-laws-at-festivals/article1917148/ The Ontario government wants to relax liquor laws at festivals and allow all-inclusive vacation packages to be sold in the province. The proposed changes, announced Wednesday, would eliminate the need for beer tents at events. “Our plan is to get rid of outdated restrictions that just don’t make sense to Ontario families today. Having a beer in your hand shouldn’t stop you from walking around a local festival,†Attorney-General Chris Bentley said in the release. The new rules would allow Ontario hotels and tour operators to sell all-inclusive vacation packages, such as those popular in Caribbean countries. Premier Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals also propose letting organizers of special events, such as weddings or charity fundraisers, serve alcohol until 2 a.m., instead of the current 1 a.m. cut off. The government said it would begin consultations on the changes, which also include allowing people with drinks to circulate in retail areas of festivals. As well, the province intends to “expand its enforcement options,†including fines, against licensees that violate liquor laws. :chug: :chug: :chug:
  15. Same here, looks fun and easy to get to. My friend lives in Palgrave which is about 15 minutes away.
  16. Oh! I didn't realize those were the new dates. Well I'll still be hoping to combine a Ramble with a Phish show (or other interesting show) in July/August.
  17. Me too! I haven't seen Phish since Coventry.
  18. A weekend trip around Lake Erie (doing Detroit and Cuyahoga Falls) looks quite possible! Darien Lake on a Wednesday, hmmm. I am tempted to hold out for the (potential) Watkins Glen announcement to materialize. The Ramble dates are also going to have to factor in to my decision making - also coming out today.
  19. This reminds me of the GABBO tv ads!
