  3. Yeah, I just figure that if people have been raised in such a way that limits their tolerance of others (or have just lacked some exposure to difference) than it could be argued that they may not know any better. Responding to such a scenario with more harsh intolerance is not going to pave a smooth way for someone who needs to create a new way of thinking and interacting with the rest of the world. In fact, I would argue that it may in fact make matters worse. I figure demonstrating that there is a better alternative to the way one thinks or behaves, and giving good arguments as to why it is a better alternative is probably going to be more effective. But there will always be assholes.
  4. Sometimes I have a hard time seeing the logic behind trying to rid intolerant behaviour through a no tolerance policy. This is not to say that the issue of people spewing out racial, sexist or otherwise ignorant slurs should not be addressed. However, I would think the school would likely gain more ground if they had regular classes/workshops, etc. that promoted tolerance of diversity in all of its forms. (Instead of a no tolerance, end of story, look the other way and hope it doesn't happen again approach). To me that would set a good foundation for explaining the negative and positive connotations of the words we choose to use. And if the negative behaviour continues, then atleast a student cannot pretend that they did not realize the implications of their words and actions. Under such a scenario a more severe punishment may prove to be worthwhile (i.e. release the hounds)... A child should be able to attend a public school without fear of daily harassment. The rest of the world may be a different story, but if you have to go to school by law, than you should be able to do so with a baseline sense of security.

  11. Blustery, icy, white-out conditions from outside my window in Flamborough (just west of Hamilton). I saw on the news that Haldimand-Norfolk County was closing their schools at noon today (which is somewhat unusual). Does Cayuga fall within the borders of that county? May be a nasty drive to go and pick up your truck there Steve. Lake Erie region usually gets particularly dicey.

  13. In case anyone might be interested: Stephen Lewis, McMaster University's Social Sciences scholar-in-residence, has in recent years been associated most with the HIV-AIDS pandemic in Africa. Few know, however, that Lewis was also involved in environmental issues long before people got around to accepting the dire prognostications about climate change. Lewis chaired one of the first international conferences on the subject in Toronto in 1988. On Monday, March 5, Lewis takes the stage at Convocation Hall to speak about Climate Change: The New Big Thing. His lecture will be taped for broadcast by TVOntario's Big Ideas series. Lewis's talk begins at noon, and will be followed by a question-and-answer period. Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and will be available on a strictly first come, first served basis.

    Work Pet Peeves

Unfortunately I probably fall into that category SSJ. Not quite as ignorant as the example you've outlined... but close. As for work pet peeves, for the most part I work at home by myself. But I get on my own nerves all of the time!!
  17. The hammertown ladies are going out on the town tonight (town of guelph that is)... Shannon Lyon with guest Lucas Stagg are at the E-bar tonight. Should be good times.

    Who are you?

yes. as pure and virtuous as they come.
  19. Yeah, Singing around the fire with you find folks was definitely one of the highlights of my summer!! LM and Sheeb's improv reggae "no drum" ode was priceless. I'll miss that beautiful swimming hole, but it does make much more sense for the venue to be a little closer to home.

  22. Thanks for the tip there boys. As mentioned, I haven't heard either of them live. Was interested in checking Umphrey's out for the first time, and the Lucinda announcement threw a wrench in the plans as I have a sneaking suspicion that musically I would enjoy her show more.
  23. Happy Birthday Lazlo. Your continued optimism is an inspiration to us all!
