  1. I'm with you MarcO. Choucroute separates the men from the boys, the women from the girls. It's a delicious dish that should never be fancied up, artfully presented, or prepared using organic free-range blah blah blah meat. It's one of my favorite comfort foods. I can't tell though what the difference is between bigos and choucroute other than the size of the meat pieces and using Vodka (which for all intents is flavourless when cooked and I'm not sure what it's doing in there)?
  2. The price is always right but I find these really boring and tasteless otherwise. As much as I love hot stuff eating raw red chiles in a sandwich is beyond me.

    Oz Kafe

Everyone's been telling me this and I've always avoided the place because of the ugly marquee. Time to look past the exterior I guess.

Mind my asking who you have your house insurance with? We have it already but it sounds like you had a good response from yours and our renewal is coming up.
  5. I'm on the smoothie train and it's made all the difference. Mine is yogurt, banana, Apple juice or apple cider and a teaspoon of spirulina. I have this every morning along with a bowl of bran flakes and it keeps me going until lunchtime. Even on days where I haven't slept well (4-5 hours in a night) this drink gives me enough energy to make it through the day, and I also don't drink caffeine at all while at work. That's helping me keep the sweats and the stress levels down.

I LOVE this show. I think fans of Larry David and Jewmour (Jew+Houmour) might like it too, it's very dry. Katie bought me his semi-fictional book "Lenny Bruce is Dead" for Christmas and it's a good read too.
  7. http://www.apple.com/ca/macbookair I wet myself when Apple hippies invent things like a 1" laptop with a crazy-ass trackpad. Watch the quicktime vid and you'll see what I mean.
  8. So if I understand correctly: 1. Mp3s sound poor 2. Downloaders have no affinity to the artist whose music they download How would you place those people, like me, who listen to records and Mp3s? Records sound "poor" by some people's standards but the package medium is more interesting than a CD. I have to buy it in a store, I enjoy browsing records, but I don't enjoy browsing CDs. I buy albums off Itunes and I also download copied music. Which is to say, do I only have affinity for the artists whose records I buy and not for those whose albums I download?
  9. I never made his food, but I loved when the phone rang during the show and he'd have a fake conversation with someone on the other end. Or...maybe they were real!

    good roti in ottawa?

That's funny, I went there last night too..did you catch the band that was there? I still love the food...enough that I can sit through the unbearably slow service waiting for it.
  11. The Manx makes a delicious (if pricey, at $6.50) grilled cheese with cheddar and swiss, sauteed mushrooms and grilled onions. I think they use a flavoured butter when they grill it too...it's very satisfying. I hate people that make their grilled cheese with multigrain bread. Wonder Bread was probably invented for grilled cheese sandwiches.
  12. I like them both, but I think a good devilled egg is hard to beat.

    good roti in ottawa?

And there's nothing in the city that can hold a candle to it, though Groovy's is pretty decent.
  14. That would make an awesome gift for me and about 95% of my friends (the remaining 5% are losers who would probably like Red Dwarf DVDs or something). But the link is broken and searching takes too long. Can you please repost the right link?

I fuckin' love this stuff - it's better than candy:
  16. I think Brad said it best: It's none of their business whether you do or do not support the United Way and how you support them if at all. A mandated pay stub donation (which would make me go postal and is completely unethical to me) that you opt out of shouldn't be frowned upon. They could give you the occasional United Way brochure with your paycheque as a reminder and that wouldn't be too intrusive. All that to say - it's not the United Way's tactics so much as the employer's tactics that aren't quite kosher.
  17. Yeah there was a bit of 80s cheese in the middle, but the pre-encore number was a jawdropper. I loved the keyboardist/drummers Animal-ish styles.
  18. Or you could get a mac, which updates itself and never disturbs you.
  19. "Kettleman's Rulez"? Are you kidding? I think their bagels are shite. And their excuse for a "latke" just adds insult to injury. Next time you eat a kettleman's bagel pay attention to the aftertaste - I find it very metallic and I think it's because they do not use filtered water, just tap water in the dough. Ottawa Bagelshop doesn't have the same bad taste in your mouth, they are the superior bagel in town. Neither place holds a candle to St.Viateur proper. Their bagels have just a bit of salt on the outside so you get a nice sweet/salt combination which neither Ottawa bagelshop nor Kettleman's gives me.
  20. Regarding Guigsy's comment on show length I'd refute it and instead say (optimistically I guess) that the crowds respectfulness lengthened the set more than anything. It really was nice to have the quiet during solos, very few outbursts and a positive attitude overall. AD that's a shame about sound quality, in centre of aisle where we were it was expectedly quite good though a bit loud I guess - no complaints. Should the setlist above say "Easy Plateau with wall of sound Meltdown" or is that too specific? I love a good feedback meltdown.
  21. It was a good show, and I had fun. His voice was crystal clear, I didn't know he could sing so crisply. I'm glad the audience kept their mouth shut save "Thanks Jerry"and "Don't fret about it". There were a few points where Neal's guitar playing was through the roof.
  22. Everything is relative to everything else: Resource inputs to produce the car / emissions produced by the car / distance travelled on a tank of gas / type of gas used / energy required to dispose of the car / energy or inputs required to maintain the car With that mouthful, and you saying you need space, I'd probably go with either a used import minivan or an import wagon like a Diesel Jetta Wagon. You get the space you need, you buy something used so ethically speaking you're not demanding new raw materials to build a car, and if it's diesel you'll get more miles to the gallon which for me would outweigh the still-questionable environmental gains made with a hybrid (which is still too new a technology to be a foolproof argument IMO) There's a 2004 Jetta Wagon TDI on kijiji right now for under $20K. It reportedly gets 4.9L/100KM which is pretty damned incredible.
  23. Your mock disgust at artists making a living wears my patience for humanity as thin as your cracker namesake.
  24. Creative guy and great hat-wearer too:
  25. I feel obligated to suggest VSO - we're based in Ottawa but work in 34 developing countries across a range of development areas. We're not big and well-known, but we do really interesting and really progressive work in development. PM me if you want more details or visit www.vsocan.org
