\/\/illy
This is from the View magazineSHARON JONES AND THE DAP KINGSBy Sean PalmerstonARE OLD SCHOOL R&B REVIVALISTS OF THE HIGHEST CALIBRE. AFTER THEY CAME TO TOWN THE LAST TIME, EVERYBODY WAS TALKING ABOUT HOW AMAZING THE GIG WAS, AND THE SUCKERS WHO MISSED OUT COULD ONLY BITE THEIR TONGUES AND BIDE THEIR TIME. WELL, THEY’RE COMING BACK, AND VIEW HAD A CHANCE TO SPEAK WITH JONES IN ADVANCE OF THE VISIT.“God gave me the gift to sing, so I am using that gift to the best of my ability.”So says Brooklyn’s Sharon Jones, when asked of her career choice and decision to start singing funk and heavy rhythm and blues fronting the Dap–Kings some five years ago.Born in Augusta, Georgia—also the birthplace of the king of funk, James Brown—Sharon was brought up by her mother in New York City but made annual visits back to Augusta every summer. There she was introduced to funk, rhythm and blues and gospel music—three genres that have deeply affected her life.Jones has had a number of different jobs through the years, including a stint as a prison guard at Rikers and a wedding band singer (something she has done for the past 25 years and still does from time to time), but nothing has moved the 47–year–old singer (nor the crowds she consistently wows night after night) as much musically and emotionally as have the past five years with the Dap–Kings. She was originally introduced to her band through an ex, a session musician who saw an opportunity for her.“I met the Dap–Kings through the old Desco Records label around 1998,” says Jones. “They used to be in a band called the Soul Providers. Desco was doing a record for a singer by the name of Lee Fields and they needed three female back–up singers for the session. My ex, who plays the saxaphone and was working on the session, heard them talking about it and told them ‘my girl could sing for you.’“I knew they wanted three background singers, but they didn’t have them yet, so after I did the first vocal I told them I could do all three of them to save them some money. So I did them, and they were impressed. The producer, Bosco Mann, liked my voice enough that he started giving me songs to sing, starting with ‘Switchblade.’”Shortly thereafter, the Dap–Kings were formed and Jones herself was mesmerized after a transatlantic gig in England opened her eyes to the possibilities this band may have.“Just about a year later they took me to London for the first time,” says Jones “and it was fantastic. We opened up for Maceo Parker and the room went crazy when we played. It blew me away how into it people were. They knew all the songs we were doing.”Having proven themselves on the live stage, the band, under Mann’s direction, started recording a debut album for Sharon Jones on a shoestring budget for the Daptone label, a new imprint that formed out of the disintigration of Desco Records. The results, 2002’s Dap–Dipping With Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, was an underground funk sensation. The hard–edge funk and R&B contained on the album sounded more like 1966 than 2002, and their choice reworking of Janet Jackson’s “What Have You Done For Me Lately” left more than a few people thinking that it was Jackson who had covered Jones in what must have been some kind of lost gem from the ’60s.Sharon and band have improved on their debut’s impressive stature with their follow–up sophomore album, the just–released Naturally. Recorded after a few years on the road, the album is much more varied than their debut and even more impressive. Taking influence from New Orleans style R&B and afrobeat as well as JB–style funk and highlighting Jones’ sultry voice more than ever, the album has had tonnes of well–received critical praise heaped on it.“This band has come a long way,” agrees Jones. “With the first album, we were struggling just to get the money together… It was done really grassroots, we recorded the whole thing in a studio basement and it was a lot of hard work. With the new album we had enough money to get a building of our own and build a studio in it. This record has that benefit. Each time it gets better and better, and the band is great. Soul music is in all of our souls, when we get on the stage we are connected as one.”And, of course, the best place to experience this band is live. For as good as this band is on album, it is absolutely stunning when it hits the stage. As Jones sees it, the audience is a major part of this.“The audience is what makes the shows what they are,” she explains. “We love what we are doing, we love getting up and playing for people even after we are cramped up in buses and hotels for weeks on end. Being on stage makes it work it.“The only thing I hate about it is sound checks,” adds the singer. “They are the worst. I can get really pissed when sound men tell me what to do, or when they put lots of echo and reverb on my voice. I am not Mariah Carey or Britney Spears. This is funk—I have something to say when I sing, and I want to be heard, so when I say it sounds good, don’t touch it.”Sharon Jones and the Dap–Kings return to Pepper Jack’s on Saturday, April 23.
