Rule 4. Don't take the email addresses of all the Skanks off the board and make a database for a newsletter for your band...people really hate that.

well put.

i wonder if there's a band in toronto that has recently done this. ive been wondering about a couple of emails from a band i have never seen, and whose "list" i have never signed up for.

Can anyone say "Passenger"?

good call.

not the one i was thinking of (newer, more afrobeaty, apparently), but bang on with passenger.

arent passenger playing some crap bar in woodbridge tonight?

-------------------------------------------------

Wow!...exempliary post dude!...bashing a band publically for sending out emails about where they are playing ... how dare they email me ... this is not to be forgiven ... let's say bad things about them on the internet and getting people to agree with us...yes!...that's progressive

some people seemed to get pissed off pretty easily...I wonder what's really bothering them...press delete?

listen....we're not selling viagra...we're letting you know that we're out here working hard, playing music that might be up your alley...

yeah I grabbed some of your emails off of this forum...thought you might be interested....I'll take them all of off of my lists...obviously that isn't cool with you ... and this is the way it's getting communicated...

sounds like Deeps might have gotten word of this type of thing and is trying to figure out what pisses you all off...I'm not pissed off...but I'm certainly not inspired by what I'm reading here...

...slandering a group of striving artists...is this a constructive use of your energy?...aren't half of you people musicians anyways? ... I don't understand ...

"Passenger sucks man...I wouldn't go see them if you paid me... they emailed me without my permission...let's say bad things about them and post them on the internet...that's just not cool!...emailing us...they're just like wal-mart and Zellers and and George Bush!....yeah!...yeah...that's right man...for sure man...pass the joint ...ah that's the stuff!"

hmmm....where to begin?

your use of the word "slander" is interesting, with the fact that the only accusation i made was one that you admitted to several lines earlier.

your "how dare they email me"line from your first paragraph misses the point. i am all about promoting ones band, going to see live music, and having a real good time. that being said...

a-i dont spend much time in woodbridge (dont know if ive ever been actually).

b-i did not sign up for press releases several times weekly (sometimes) for a band playing in a venue i have little chance of getting to, whom i have never seen.

the lets say bad things about them on the internet and getting (sic) people to agree with us part is also a bit off the mark, perhaps. i did say things on the internet, which people did seem to agree with in several instances. its not because i got them to agree with me, its because they DID agree with me. opinions. folks have em.

you know, i dont even really know which band youre in, but i would assume passenger. the part that i wrote in my post about "[color:purple]passenger playing some crap bar in woodbridge" was in purple for a reason. purple on this board implies sarcasm. it seemed like i got an awful lot of emails from the band about gigs in bars in woodbridge. get it?

one last thing. it really is nothing about the band itself. again, i havent seen passenger before, but i have been told good things, and if schedules and location permits i will quite likely go to a show. however, bands put lists for people to sign onto their mailing lists at shows, and people sign up to receive information if they so choose. emails that generate from other methods than this tend to feel like spam, and may be met with some criticism. this is my opinion, and you are entitled to yours.

Slammer you're right I shouldn't have said what I said...It was too nice, so I've ammended to the rules just for you.

RULE 6. Passenger sucks ass, disregard any and all promo cause they are a joke of a band that no one gives a damn about and are too crappy to play a show outside of their small town.

Rule 7. Slammer is an idiot, repent for your sins fool.

Slammer,

I did not give you permission to send SPAM to me. That's the bottom line. I do not like SPAM, and I tend to steer away from whatever product the SPAM is pimping.

Now, if you posted a thread asking people to sign up for a mailing list, that would have been entirely different. I believe you abused this site - shame.

I really think slammer deserves a break, not more insulting.

If you're doing mass emails and you want them to be effective, you do them as opt-in lists and not opt-out. In other word s(and as slippery was saying) you get people at your shows to sign up, you ask them to forward copies to your friends, and you make it easy to unsubscribe.

If a band doesn't follow these rules, at the very least whatever messages they send out about themselves will not be read by the recipient. And more likely the recipient will hate you and your music for having contacted them without permission.

In terms of on-board promotion though I think within reason anything is fair game. I know it can be annoying to see the ubiquitous "Passenger is playing..." but this is still a music website and promoters and bands ought to use it as a venue to get their word out. has a band or promoter done things for you before? Played a Dark Star cover on your birthday? Taken a significant risk and brought us bands and shows we otherwise weren't expecting in our city?

Most of thes folks have little or no means and resources to promote their work. Some just have no knowledge whatsoever of how to get that message out.

To do nothing and hope your fanbase will spread the word enough seems ill-conceived. But to tell a big audience of jamband music fans about your shows on this website seems reasonable, especially when you go a bit further and do a banner ad, play a fundraiser, or in some other way lend some support to what really is a damn good website for everyone involved.

I agree with Polkaroo 100%. This is generally a music-based website; performers, promoters, bands should all feel welcome to post upcoming shows, tours, bands etc etc... If people don't want to read the thread, they don't have to.

SPAM is never good though (although I do like the random words they put in the body of some SPAM messages, some of the best poetry I've read in years.)

I thought this email thing was history. I remember that it happened over a year ago, and that slammer apologized to everyone. I also heard a passenger sampler and it was excellent. I'm sure they'd be great live.

It seems ridiculous to get all pissy about it again and to bash a band without even seeing or hearing them.

Also, did anyone hear about the banner's program on jambands.ca for bands, promoters, clothing makers, etc... ?

real cheap. good deal.

wait a second, let me get this straight....

A couple of years back this thread went down concerning exactly what you are doing now, and you gave this response acknowledging "I realize it can be a nuisance... [to receive unsolicited emails]"..... and now you're doing it AGAIN?!?!?

my grandma always said to me in her Hungarian accent "the one who says it is it"...

your opinions are overstated and unresearched ...take your hate out on the ones who caused it...please don't take your unresolved issues out on me... this is embarassing communication...please try to the up the ante my friend...rise above the temptation to lash out...

---------------------------------------------------there is a very obvious portion of the email urging you to be removed from the list if that is your wish...i would never deter someone from emailing me about a show...I get emails from the UK ...I won't see the show but I could care less about a few artists emails....an artist's temperament is a sensitive one and a difficult path to walk so discouraging words can create cynicism and impede creativity...is that what people want?

please don't confuse an artist trying to find his way into a community of like minded people with corporate spam....that seems like a bit of a leap...

alot of people responded and liked the emails...again if you get an email from Passenger about an upcoming show and you don't want to receive it ... just reply with "please remove in the subject"

Please note that I never bashed Passenger - I simply called out the fact that I receive SPAM from them. Revenge is like serving cold cuts - Tony Soprano

...just respond to the emails with "please remove"

...what's worse getting an unsolicited email from a band that plays music you might like in your area or denouncing them as "spammers" on a public message board"...this I ask you...

why would anyone hate anyone for that...this blows my mind...I hate you because I don't know you but you emailed me about your show in our area...you should be thanking us for contacting you...a possibility of enjoying some music..having a good time... I always thought it was all about love people ... not hate...what is that?

I don't think I abused this site...I wonder if it's suppose to be a place to give unconstructive criticism about people in public...if your intentions are to help then why don't you get my email off the site and email me something...pimping?...

to sum this deally up from my point of view...

please...I urge you....if you want to get off the Passenger/Chipotle email list please email me at

curveball@sympatico.ca

I will be more than happy to get you off of it if it bothers you...I meant no harm...maybe I'm from another planet but it seemed reasonable to me that people who listen to the same sort of music that influences our band would want to know if there was a show in that ballpark style in their vicinity...if that doesn't work for you please feel free to respond and you will get out of the loop...no problemo...I understand that people get a lot of unsolicited emails...I do as well...but when I get them from bands it makes me smile...(I certainly don't get pissed off)...it reassures me that there are lots of people out there working hard to make good music...that is what I want to see...that is what I want to believe is happening in the world...

some of the type of communications and the type of sentiments that are being expressed in this thread are not so reassuring ... I would not like to think that in order to maintain my optimism that I would have to stay away from this website...thanks!
