Birdy
I just read online to put an inch of apple cider vinegar in a jar and poke some holes in the top of it. I guess the fruit flies can go in, but can't find their way back out. I'm going to give it a go tonight.

meggo
fack! i was going to post the same thing. i noticed them yesterday on a lime that we left out over night... every year! and it seems once they're here, they're here til winter, despite all my attempts. i must say though, i've had good luck with the sticky paper. but it is disgusting. SaggyBalls
get a beer bottle...not the one you put your smoke out in.A bit of beer in the bottom is alrightPut some fruit in it (a piece of apple works well)Cover the top with plastic wrappoke a few holes in it.Fruit flies can get out of some holes in jar lids.Beer bottles are fairly discreet. you can put these around your home if you need to. Birdy
I think i was counting on fruit flies being really, really stupid. I have a huge pickle jar with holes the size of finger nails punctured in it. I'll see just how smart they are in the morning. I put it right beside the bananas and melon too. Birdy
My jar had zero fruit flies in it this morning. Perhaps they sleep at night.I'm going to do an uber power clean of my kitchen tonight, stop storing my fruit on the counter and maybe make up the saran wrap fruit fly trap YT suggested. StaggerLee
I switched my under-the-sink plastic compost bin to a stainless steel countertop one that I wash regularly and fruit flies aren't much of a problem anymore. You can pour a white vinegar or bleach down the kitchen sink drain too; that's where they breed. phishtaper
flame throwers are foolproof, but novices may find that simply removing the food or garbage they are on will work just as well.
