NYC Restaurants- advice welcome

Having really only travelled to NYC for Phish I haven't seen nearly the amount I should have and have booked the Thanksgiving weekend there in October.

I too would love recommendations, even the low brow type of places. I am not one to spend $100 on dinner- so any and all would be appreciated.

I found a couple of great places when I was there...however, we lost all the photos and can't remember any of the names.

Things I do remember....

1. Our hotel had make your own waffles.

2. There was a wicked pizza joint just off Canal street. It was lunchtime and a school was on break. It was over-run with kids. One of the "gangsta kids" ripped off a pop, hiked up his gangsta pants, and took off down the street. The old italian working the counter took off down the street pizza wheel in hand.

3. Mexican joint just down the road from the Blue Note. If you can't make it, there is a McDicks just across from the Blue Note. It's the one Adam Sandler pissed on in "Big Daddy"

4. Went by the Soup Nazi...but it was closed.

I'm sure all that helps!

I am staying in Soho. We got a great deal at the new Trump hotel. We are traveling with the in-laws. Looking at up scale places, but likely not twelve course tasting menues.

Also more casual, neighbourhood lunch spots would be nice to know about.

Perfect. I'm not a food person but I know what tastes good. Here are some of my favourite places that are either in or near SoHo. I'd say of the places below Shang is the most upscale. I can probably think of more lunch spots...

Good Italian - Frank (cash only, crowded and noisy but amazing food) http://www.frankrestaurant.com/index.asp

Burritos - Neighburrito (more of a lunch thing obviously) http://neighburrito.com/

Asian - Momofuku http://www.momofuku.com/, Shang http://www.shangrestaurant.com/

'American' - Five Points http://www.fivepointsrestaurant.com/

I was down a couple of weeks ago, great pints at the Jeckyl and Hyde, just south of Soho.

I can vouch for that too! Was there on the May long weekend.

Good cheese shop just south of there on Bleecker, and a killer guitar store too. Check out the ones near the front in the glass case....

Awesome suggestions guys! Keep'em coming!

Bri- that Iphone app is pretty damn cool and free!

C-Towns- I plan to make the double down a daily ritual when I go see Phish in a couple weeks (except for in Saratoga, where I plan to eat a lot of bbq).

Well, I managed to eat my way around NYC!

We had many great Italian and French Bistro style meals. All were pretty damn tasty with a few stand outs! Balthazar has the Brassier thing down to a science and everything I had there was amazing.

Daniel Boulud's Bistro Moderne takes the cake for the craziest meal I have had in a while (although not the best). I tried their signature burger- stuffed with braised short ribs, black truffle and fois gras.

Tasty stuff, but the good stuff in the middle of the burger kind of melted together, flavor wise.

Still, it was an interesting burger.

I was most impressed with all things Italian. Lots of great cheeses, house cured meats, and the stand out dish of the trip was truffled and zucchini flower risotto. Amazing!

I was a little disapointed with Nobu. Good sushi, but not as good as some I have had. I think it is coasting off it's trendy reputation.

Thanks to all for the advice. There was so much to try in only 4 days, I can't wait to go back!

That is pretty close to the park. I didn't spend much time there, but we did check out the roller disco that goes on every Saturday afternoon. Worth checking out for the people watching alone.

I'm no too sure about restaurants in that area.

Highly recommend spending some time in Soho, if you get the chance. Great shopping and arts scene.
