  1. September 24 Today the song "Tell Her About It" by Billy Joel topped the charts and stayed there for a week. (1983) Today the song "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin topped the charts and stayed there for 2 weeks. (1988) Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs record "The Ballad Of Jed Clampett," the theme for "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962)
  2. WHen is this show again? The venue (Dominion Chalmers Church) is spitting distance from my balcony. I saw a show there during that BC Scene festival and it is a pretty neat venue. Who isn't a sucker for shows in nice churches?
  3. Anyone have any recommended spots for good wings in Centretown, or near U of Ottawa? (I tried searching 'wings' on Ottawa Foodies but didn't find what I was looking for) Thanks!
  4. Great speaker! Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep it in mind.
  5. Actually I was there for lunch yesterday! Two thumbs up for the chicken shawarma. The staff gave me that "this restaurant is only a front for our more lucrative and shady activities" vibe. I can't back that up or anything, just a vibe!

    zucchini?

I'm gonna make this tomorrow - sounds delicious! We have tons of zuchini right now too. We shredded and froze a whole bunch of it, to be used this winter for chocolate zuchini bread (or for this recipe here!)
  7. I can't make it.. BUt I work right in this area (at Scott & Pinhey) and I'm curious as to what peoples' favourite restaurants are in the area. Here's my thoughts: Helen's - one of the worst shawarma's in the City, even though Helen and her fam are incredible nice. Great hummus and tabouli though, and those pizzas are pretty good. Habeesha - excellent Ethiopian food, super cheap, highly recommended! I like it better than Blue Nile. Get the beef tibbs or the fir fir. Spring Roll - Their pho is surprisingly good (#19 - rare beef with beef brisket), considering everything else on the menu is horrible. Credible Edibles - amazing lunch spot! 10% discount if you come by bike. Pnom Penh (sp) - not bad... not great but not bad. Better than Spring Roll.
  8. This will be a cool show, the first two bands are from Calgary and go over well at The Ho, you Ottawan Indie Pop lovers (AD) will dig it. Ascot Royals look fun too. Anyone checking this out tonight?
  9. This would be something to see!
  10. I want to go to that Vic Chestnut gig! Looks like a good gig. Billy Bragg - can't make it. Thanks Bradm for hooking us up with that info.
  11. ALso: NICK CAVE in Ottawa! I think it might even be tonight, if not then its this weekend.. BUT -- he is only reading, not playing music. THE LAST WALTZ -- is being screened at the ByTowne cinema.. Once at the end of Sept and once at the beginning of Oct I believe. Sorry for the lack of precise info! Don't know about you guys, but this is the first time I've EVER seen the Last Waltz being screened at any cinema anywhere, ever.
  12. BA Johnston is also playing that night at the Montreal House.... Just in case you get bored of the Sisters.
  13. I thought he was stalking me a year and a half ago when it was Spring and I was living in Toronto: I am playing frisbee at Christie Pits, there he is getting in the way of the disc. I am working the counter at Linuxcaffe, there he is getting me to make him a sandwich. I go to see a band at the Dakota, there he is standing around. I pop into Alternative Grounds in Roncesvalles for a cup of joe, there he is sitting around.
  14. I think I saw these guys open for the Golden Dogs at the Dakota.. If that was them.. They were quite good!

  17. I am gonna try to make it! I can't find the start time on the NAC website, do you know Velvet?
  18. Hey! Last year at Christmas I did a trip in Tanzania. We flew right to Zanzibar and spent much of the next 9-10 days up in the north at Baraka Guesthouse on Nungwi beach. Nungwi is a popular spot with backpackers, can be kinda loud at night.. But we were meeting up with friends, about 8 of us and we were ready to party so it suited us fine! If you wander down the street away from the beach and past the initial storefronts, you get into a village with delicious and cheap street food, less than 1/4 the prices you pay on the beach. We also hit the quieter east coast, a place called Pongwe, which was beautiful. Stone Town has lots to see and eat too. (Freddie Mercury's place of birth!) We then took a crowded overnight ferry to Dar Es Salaam. We didn't spend any time in Dar, just a quick taxi from the port to the super sketchy bus station and hopped on a bus to Arusha. Scandinavian buslines I think we took and it was fine. (just one flat tire). Arusha is the starting point for those hitting the northern Tanzania safari circuit and/or climbing Kilimanjaro. In Arusha we stayed at a place called L'Oasis Lodge which I highly recommend! www.loasislodge.com The 1st time through we stayed in their "Annex" which is just a simple motel room, much cheaper but did the job and this also includes their kick-ass breakfast (one of the few times I had bacon in Africa). The 2nd time through was at the end of our trip and we splurged for one of their very charming and cozy cabins. There is a village around the corner with cheap internet and street food available. We didn't see a whole lot of Arusha itself, though it would be neat to visit the place where they have the Rwanda genocide tribunals. SAFARI: We did a 3-day, 2-night safari with Sunny Safaris. Sunny Safaris gets good reviews (at the time of my research) and also came recommended by a friend. They've been around a long time, and cost a LOT.. On the bright side, it was just my girlfriend and I, with the guide/driver and our cook (no other tourists). BUT -- We were not at all impressed with our guide, and that makes a big difference. I forget his name unfortunately, but he was very moody and grumpy and didn't offer much insight into what we were seeing on the safari. The food was good enough. Our cook was a really nice man. The accom - tent, in a camping park that resembled a KOA camping park. (Certainly not a solitary tent set up ina plain with an epic mountain backdrop like in the photos!) The parks we went to were amazing though: Ngorogoro Crater is right out of The Lion King, just amazing!!! We also saw the smaller Tarangire natioanl park and one other one (damn can't remember the name). Serengetti is the next one down the road but that would have been an extra day/night and extra hundreds of dollars so we didn't make it there. That's about it for now, but shoot me some questions if you have any!
  19. I've been! Well not right to the Serengetti but right in the area (Arusha). Busy at work at the moment though.. I'll post some thoughts soon.
  20. I, for one, will be clicking on Blurasis'ss link. Although this is the first time in many years I've actually really wanted to play a particular video game! If I had a Wii I'd defiitely get the Beatles game.
  21. Enjoy! http://whatsinmyipod.blogspot.com/
