  3. A long drive, but a freakin' beautiful one that everyone should do once. I've driven across Canada/the U.S. a bunch of times, and the only stretch that I might like better than Northern Ontario is The Rockies. Cruising along on a sunny day with Lake Superior on one side and towering pine forests on the other is truly special. Hope the show goes well, Mike.

  5. Funnily enough, no. I've seen more than one story in the past few weeks about what a problem this has been on the Hannah Montana tour. I guess now that soccer moms are the ones being bitten by scalpers, people are paying attention.

  8. WOO HOO! I had wanted to start this thread on the weekend, but figured I'd leave the honours to one of the involved parties. Here's to the three of you, and the drunk uncle participating from the sidelines.
  9. Soooo...what speed do you declare is safe for me to drive? 115? 120? 149? Is it safe to say that the physics involved in stopping a car at 115 is different than stopping a car at 100, or are cars equally safe at both speeds? Is it safe to say that the traffic people have done the math already and have clearly posted their results? Who makes the rules here? Yes, it absolutely is. The faster something is moving, the greater distance it will take to come to a complete stop. I don't know what the rationale is for given speed limits, but like I said before, I think it's entirely possible to drive safely while going above the posted speed limit. As for where to draw the line, that's obviously a difficult task, as we're dealing with something (speed) that increases incrementally without ever achieving a critical mass that will suddenly make it "unsafe" where it wasn't before. Personally, I think that on major highways during dry daylight hours, it's possible to drive safely at 120 km/h, even though that doesn't guarantee that a moose won't jump out in front of your car and you'll end up dead. To that end, you're taking similar risks at 99km/h than you are at 140 km/h, just to a lesser degree.
  10. I disagree. I don't see speeding as a completely binary offence, where you're either going over the limit and driving dangerously, or going under it and driving safely (all other things being equal). There is a major difference in reaction time/control of the car, etc. when you are driving at, say 115 km/h versus 150 km/h. It's simple physics. You may think it's unnecessarily dangerous to drive at 115 km/h, which is fine, but the reality of the matter is that speeding becomes more dangerous the faster you go.
  11. Did anyone at the Ottawa show have problems getting in? My mother and stepfather were there, and called me from outside the venue within an hour of the scheduled start of the show, saying that the gates hadn't yet opened. Once they were let in, they were told that there were some delays in getting "set up". I know the show wasn't affected at all, but I'm wondering if anyone knows what was up.

  13. what backlash? Sorry, I should have expanded on that. After the event last year, a lot of crochety elitist locals did a lot of belly aching about the partying, specifically the amount of drugs that were found. There were also a couple of sketchy things that happened that got way too much attention amongst bored locals. The thing is, if law enforcement would pay as much attention to other groups that come into Lake Placid (specifically the massive rugby and lacrosse tournaments that are in town each summer) they would find just as much to get worked up about, yet they don't pay those groups the mind that they do the moe.rons. I should also say that part of my frustration lies with some of the festival attendees. Some people don't seem to realize that being in a small town where families live isn't like being inside the gates of a festy, where anything goes. But that's enough out of me.

  15. Glad to hear it went well. Hearing that Soulshine was covered wasn't a huge surprise, as that's one that used to get busted out at many a late-night jam session when Matt and I lived together on Bridge St. in Sackville (New Brunswick, that is). Brad, you didn't tape by any chance, did you?
  16. I haven't seen Ray Mears, but between Bear Grylls and Les Stroud, I'd have to give the edge to Les in terms of "real deal-ness." Bear's show is entertaining, but lacks the authenticity that Survivorman has. When Les gets left in the wild, he is totally and completely by himself (which might explain some of the "whining"), whereas Man vs. Wild sometimes seems a little too staged for my liking.

  19. Really looking forward to this show, and not only because Logan's is literally right around the corner from my house. Anyone else in? (I realize I'm going to get nothing but crickets in this thread, but I'm looking forward to the show and felt like procrastinating on it for a minute or two).
  20. As always with Mapquest, an hour and a half is giving yourself plenty of time (just make sure you watch for Amish buggies on the American side). Canton is a rad little town, I wish I were around for this.
  21. Did a double-take when I saw this. I don't know who has the Matt Salvatore connection, but brother has some serious chops. We were pseudo-roomates at school in New Brunswick, so I used to jam with the guy pretty regularly. Last I was talking to him he wasn't playing much, so I'm glad to see he's connected with you.   22. Yes and no. I remember reading a piece about him in Rolling Stone a couple of years ago that talked about what he did to make it big. I guess he rode the first wave of Napster and other such file sharing sites, using his home computer to get as much of his stuff out there as possible. He was also one of the first entertainers to tap into the power of MySpace, and as far as I know has the most "friends" of any legitimate MySpace user. He's well marketed, but much of that has been his own grassroots doing, so I don't know that I would call him a "marketing creation". I don't care much for his humour (though I chuckle at him from time to time), but I have to hand it to the dude for making it happen for himself.
