I Can Still Make Cheyenne - George Strait

Her telephone rang bout a quarter to nine

She heard his voice on the other end of the line

She wondered what was wrong this time

She never knew what his calls might bring

With a cowboy like him, it could be anything

And she always expected the worst

In the back of her mind

He said, its cold out here and Im all alone

I didnt make the short go, again and Im coming home

I know Ive been away too long

I never got a chance to write or call

And I know this rodeo has been hard on us all

But Ill be home soon

And honey is there somethin wrong

She said, dont bother comin home

By time you get here Ill be long gone

Theres somebody new and he sure aint no rodeo man

He said, Im sorry its come down to this

Theres so much about you that Im gonna miss

But its alright baby

If I hurry I can still make cheyenne

Gotta go now baby

If I hurry I can still make cheyenne

He left that phone danglin off the hook

Then slowly turned around and gave it one last look

Then he just walked away

He aimed his truck toward that wyoming line

With a little luck he could still get there in time

And in that cheyenne wind he could still hear her say

She said, dont bother comin home

By time you get here Ill be long gone

Theres somebody new and he sure aint no rodeo man

He said, Im sorry its come down to this

Theres so much about you that Im gonna miss

But its alright baby

If I hurry I can still make cheyenne

Gotta go now baby

If I hurry I can still make cheyenne

She never knew what his calls might bring

With a cowboy like him, it could be anything

And she always expected the worst

In the back of her mind

I'm about as non-religious as you can get, but my family is pretty Catholic and I attended Catholic school growing up; as a result, most of the people that I have known for a long time also some from Catholic families... so, I have been to a lot of funerals in the Catholic Church. The one song that always chokes me up - even just thinking about it - is the hymn "Be Not Afraid", because I have heard it at just about every funeral I have ever attended.
You shall cross the barren desert, but you shall not die of thirst.

You shall wander far in safety though you do not know the way.

You shall speak your words in foreign lands and all will understand.

You shall see the face of God and live.

Be not afraid.

I go before you always;

Come follow me,

and I will give you rest.

If you pass through raging waters in the sea, you shall not drown.

If you walk amid the burning flames, you shall not be harmed.

If you stand before the pow'r of hell and death is at your side, know that I am with you through it all.

Be not afraid.

I go before you always;

Come follow me,

and I will give you rest.

Blessed are your poor, for the kingdom shall be theirs.

Blest are you that weep and mourn, for one day you shall laugh.

And if wicked men insult and hate you all because of me, blessed, blessed are you!

Be not afraid.

I go before you always;

Come follow me,

and I will give you rest.

Wow--haven't thought about this song in ages. It's a beautiful song (I, too, am a recovering Catholic--not just a regular Catholic either, but the kind who was in the church choir), but now I can't get it out of my head!

Another song that makes me cry, every single time, is the national anthem...likely a combination of truly loving the freedom we have in Canada and thinking about my dad, who was super patriotic and instilled that in me.

Ditto ... i don't know how Olympians/athletes and people who represent Canada on an International stage who win, can keep their composure when the anthem is played. I'd be a quivering puddle!

Later . . .

Kanada Kev =8)

Some songs do it, not all the time, but at specific shows live have:

Shining Star - JGB Buffalo '93 (especially when it became a massive sing-along)

Bring The Boys Back Home - Roger Waters ACC '06

Bird Song - Grateful Dead 9/7/90

Shooting Star - Bob Dylan

All of these by the great Canadian band Tanglefoot

Vimy

Secord's Warning

Old Broken Soldier

Little Soldiers

Being in the middle of a massive drum circle at Cherry Beach after Jerry died ... CATHARSIS ... what a moment!

well, Neil Young's "It's a Dream" does it to me almost every time. On the CD, when his voice breaks as he goes for the high part of the melody ("it's only a dream...") and then his sigh of inevitably ("and it's fading now, fading away....") - I pretty much lose it right there. Sometimes I think that's the most beautiful song I've ever heard.

Dave Matthews' "Stay or Leave" will always remind of a particularly low period for me and can take me by surprise sometimes.

Lucinda Williams' "Sweet Old World" can hit pretty hard sometimes too.

wow, at first I didn't think I had an answer for this topic!

For me, as well, it was the moment as much as the music and just as we have watershed moments with our parents and grandparents, of course, we have them with our children too.

A few summers ago, James' band opened for the Hip at Bayfest in Sarnia. As his mother and I stood in that sea of people, I suddenly got this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Their first time before a large crowd and I was well aware of the reputation of Hip fans for chewing up opening acts.

Then the chant began...Hip...Hip...Hip! It started to build and I thought aw shit here we go. As a parent, I had never felt so helpless.

A minute later, the boys walked on stage. James said, "Hi we're the Spades. We're from Peterborough" and ripped into the most torrid version of Mafia Sting that I have ever heard before or since. Absolutely stunned the place.

If I live to be 100 and see a 1000 more shows, I doubt I'll ever experience the emotion I did the moment that song ended.....
