Velvet
Hello, As many of you know I have a fairly deep fear of computers. Well, mine's been acting up lately, specifically how long it takes to open a browser window. My neighbor suggested defragging, which sounds very scary and dangerous. I was told to find the option under Programs/Accesories/System Tools, that I should close all programs and click it up.Is this a good idea? bagochips
You should do that every month or so, Velvet.

Basher
Velvet, turn off any standby options, screensavers, and close ALL running programs before starting the defrag. Otherwise the defrag will just keep restarting itself when it gets interrupted.
phishtaper
but for god's sake, stay at least 20 feet away from the computer when you start the defrag. small pieces of hard disc could come flying out and blind you!
Velvet
Defrag is complete, garnering a net improvement in performance of zero. But I can still post.
Basher
Todd, you probably have a whack of programs starting up when your compter loads, sagging resources.I wouldn't be comfortable giving you steps to perform on your own, but I could talk you through it if you like. AD
i was thinking maybe it was just the "analyze" step that was completed. or it could be a small drive or a large empty one.

Blane
while there's a defrag thread up, I have a question too:How come my computer ALWAYS tells me I don't need to defrag when I do the analysis. Seriously, I don't think that in the 2 years I've had it is has said "you should defragment this drive", yet I run torrents, have lots of files, etc. Any idea why it doesn't seem to need it?
