zero
This is just cringe worthy. John Mayer gets particular wince points. Stars flocked to Twitter to express their shock and sadness over the death of DJ AM (aka Adam Goldstein), 36, whose body was found Friday in his New York apartment."Nononononono what?? I can't believe this.. i'm in shock. why? why? r.i.p. adam," wrote Lindsay Lohan, who was the first to comment on Twitter. Tweeted John Mayer: "In complete shock ...I really want to use words right now but I can't get em. F---... We're supposed to lose our friends to time, at an age when we're ready to agree to the terms of having lived a long life. Not now." Paris Hilton wrote, "Adam and I were friends since I was 15. He had a heart of gold and was one of the kindest, funniest and most talented men I have ever met...It's so hard to accept that I'm not going to be able to see him or talk to him again. There are no right words for this, I feel so sad. :(" Diddy wrote, "DJ AM Rest In Peace..." Shannon Elizabeth Tweeted, "OMG - I can't believe it-DJ AM was just found dead-he was such a sweet, amazing guy-I'm soooo sad! I pray he has peace & happiness now..." Tony Hawk wrote: "Not everything happens for a reason. Thinking of you, @trvsbrkr. Stay strong." Ryan Seacrest Tweeted, "So sad the hear about adam. a very kind and generous guy." Dita Von Teese wrote, "Shocked at the news of my good friend DJ AM." Shanna Moakler wrote, "My deepest condolences for DJ AM, you were a great artist and will be severely missed. My thoughts and Prayers to his family and friends." No cause of death has been confirmed, though TMZ.com is reporting prescription pill bottles were found near his body. People.com is quoting sources claiming DJ AM was upset over his recent breakup with model Hayley Wood. "She ended it, and he didn't want it to end. The breakup hurt him. He hadn't been in a good place lately. For the past week, he wasn't really around, he was keeping to himself, and he was blowing people off," said a source. The celebrity spinner survived a fiery plane crash in September 2008, when the private plane he and Blink 182's Travis Barker were travelling on crashed while trying to take off at an airport in South Carolina. The crash left two pilots and two passengers dead, and Goldstein and Barker in critical condition. DJ AM was once engaged to Nicole Richie, and later dated Mandy Moore. He posted his last Tweet on Thursday, which was Grandmaster Flash lyrics: "New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems." Jay Funk Dawg
He was found dead with "drug paraphernalia" in New York - so accidental or not he was playing with Fire.I noticed how DJ AM was all the talk on twitter last night - lots of love being sent out on his behalf. bouche
Mandy Adams is pretty broken up. I wonder if Ryan is a Suspect?Even more cringe-worthy are the photos the paps are making sure to get in order to make a story. Seriously, couldn't that photo be of anything? YearsAlongTheSea
Are we more upset that celebrities aren't wording their condolences to our liking or that we lost an artist? The latter makes more sense to me....RIP DJ AM...

Jay Funk Dawg
So my DJ friend from DC told me that DJ AM was a know Heroin user and apparently had cleaned up his act after his brush with death - however a power addiction like Heroin can still strike at any time, even years after cleaning up. Kanada Kev
http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2009/08/28/2009-08-28_adam_goldstein_aka_dj_am_found_dead_in_his_manhattan_apartment.html Celebrity spinner DJ AM was found dead inside his Manhattan apartment Friday night - a crack pipe and several pill bottles nearby, police sources said. The 36-year-old ex-boyfriend of Nicole Richie, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, was discovered in bed wearing only sweatpants at his $2 million SoHo pad, sources said. "He hadn't been there long," a police source said. Investigators found a glass pipe in his bedroom and at least seven bottles of prescription drugs on his kitchen counter, including the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, sources said. A friend of Goldstein who had not heard from him knocked on his door, got no answer and called 911. Cops and FDNY workers found the body about 5:25 p.m., police said. Goldstein's death comes less than a year after he barely survived a plane crash with buddy and musical collaborator Travis Barker, the former drummer for Blink-182. Four people were killed when the plane skidded off a South Carolina runway. Goldstein suffered severe burns. "After the accident, he changed," said close pal and fellow deejay Scott Schroer, 36. "He was more humble. He cared more about people and life." But the harrowing accident changed Goldstein in other ways, too, Schroer said. "Prescription drugs? If you had been in a plane crash a year ago, I'm sure you'd have prescription drugs, too," he told a Daily News reporter. Goldstein was slated to star in a intervention-style MTV show, "Gone Too Far," helping teens break their drug addictions and talking about his own substance-abuse battles. "It makes me feel great," Goldstein said in an interview with Extra in July. "People were there for me when I asked for help, and I had no idea how to stop, so I'm there for them." In a recent interview with the AP, he talked about holding a crack pipe for the first time in years for the show. He was supposed to perform Friday night at the Rain nightclub inside The Palms in Las Vegas. Just last Sunday, Goldstein threw out the first pitch at the Mets game at Citi Field. His last Twitter message was posted three days ago. He quoted a famous verse by rapper Grandmaster Flash: "New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain't always what it seems." Shocked friends gathered outside Goldstein's Lafayette St. apartment after word of his death spread. "He was one of the nicest guys I ever met -he was a teddy bear," said a pal who saw him Tuesday. "I can't believe he survived a plane crash and then this happened," said a pal who saw him Tuesday. Born in Philadelphia, Goldstein battled addiction, obesity and depression as a teenager. He landed in rehab at age 17 but returned to the California late-night rave scene and relapsed hard, doing drugs until 10 a.m. in his apartment. "I would deejay until 2 a.m., go get drugs and stay up until 10 in the morning doing drugs in my apartment," Goldstein told People in 2005. "Then I would wake up and eat like a beast. I was the only fat crackhead in L.A.," he told People in 2005. Goldstein's weight ballooned above 300 pounds, and his cocaine use continued until one night in 1997 when he shoved a .22-caliber gun into his mouth. "My whole life flashed in front of me, and I knew this was not my destiny," said Goldstein. "I started bawling my eyes out. I was like, 'God, please help me.' " After getting sober, he got gastric bypass surgery in 2003. He lost 155 pounds, dropping from a high of 324. Goldstein was engaged to Richie in 2005, but the relationship was rocky and they called off the wedding. Goldstein subsequently dated a number of starlets, including actress Mandy Moore and model Jessica Stam. A slew of celebrities reacted to Goldstein's sudden death on Twitter. "I'm stunned. Rest in peace Adam," singer-songwriter Josh Groban posted. "I'm sorry to loved ones," musician and video director Pete Wentz wrote. "So unexpected." Singer John Mayer wrote: "We're supposed to lose our friends to time, at an age when we're ready to agree to the terms of having lived a long life. Not now." kburke@nydailynews.com Edited August 30, 2009 by Guest
zero
Part of what's cringe worthy is that he's known for being a celebrity or near-celebrity more than a DJ. Were it not for his onetime relationship with Nicole Richie he would likely not be a 'name' at all. This is a guy who played casinos, Vanity Fair afterparties, bar and batmitzvah's, as well as I'm sure throwdown's at everyone from Paris to Perez's house. zero
We're not talking about Gram Parsons, Rick Danko or Jerry Garcia here folks let alone Jam Master Jay. We're talking about DJ fucking AM who, I'm sure with very little biographical digging, is just an overprivileged twat who leveraged his moneyed beginnings into a lucrative career as a 'celebrity spinner' who could have (and likely did) put on a mix CD and no one would know the difference. At least Samantha Ronson in spite of her lezzy relationship with Lindsay Lohan is Mark Ronson's (a current and celebrated producer) sister. So yeah I'm judging the Twitter culture, the C-list celebrity culture, the self-aggrandizing club and party scene and those who live and die by that sword. I survived it (not the celebrity part but the hard drugs and raving etc.) and feel I am entitled to a modicum of umbrage.Any eulogy that can be reduced to 120 characters or less and typed with your thumbs is likely, even if incidentally, disingenuous at least and insincere at worst. "I love you" takes up 10 characters. It's point is not diminished because it didn't require a novel to say it. It would also make a perfectly adequate eulogy, if it was the sentiment that the person giving the eulogy was intending..

Hartamophone
Does anyone else find the picture in KK's post horrendous? "Photographers" ambivalently jockeying for position to get the shot of a man's cold dead body? Then again, the fact that this thread had legs shows that there is a demand for what they feed us. Kanada Kev
the fact that this thread had legs shows that there is a demand for what they feed us.Yup. The age of Celebrity. The public eats it up. Think of how many "celebrities" there are right now who really do nothing but keep their "careers" alive because of those photographers (and not based on any artistic talent whatsoever).
