Who is John Mayer?

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but who is he?

He is doing a tour with Spearhead, and I'm trying to figure out if he is big enough that it's a double-bill or else who is opening for whom?

Is he from another band? Anyone know if he is opening for Spearhead or vice versa, or do they trade off each show or something?

Well his most recent fame is likely his on again off again rendezvous with Jennifer Aniston. I have heard that he is actually a pretty good guitar player, but I'm not real familiar with any of his material. Except for the one tune about 'your body is a wonderland' or something along those lines...which I thought was pretty watered-down, shotty pop.

He is a Top 40 songwriter with hits such as Your Body is a Wonderland, Why Georgia and Daughters.

He is actually an amazing guitarist (see the ACLimits with Buddy Guy for video evidence of that). And the fact that he attended Berklee School of Music

He has turned into a celebrity more than anything for his love interests and participation in every award show tribute etc (He was the most awkwardly placed performer at Michael Jacksons tribute not long ago). He has also found himself in the spotlight while dating Jennifer Love Hewitt and most famously Jessica Simpson.

His best album is the John Mayer Trio live- featuring Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan.

Mayer does do the top 40 thing... but his blues/rhythm guitar playing is top notch.

Don't worry about the pop aspect though, as I personally find spearhead more poppy

Are you fucking kidding me? You you find spearhead MORE poppy that John Mayer??? Are you sure we're talking about the same Mayer?

He's a ridiculous guitar player. I saw him at Bonnaroo with Herbie Hancock and it was awesome. Don't care much for his songs, but when he just plays there aren't many better. I'd never go see a bill with just him on it though, the songs are way too cheesy.

I don't know that much about John Mayer's songs other than that boy can play the guitar. Did anyone see him on the Chappelle show with Q-tip doing the skit about what makes black people dance versus what makes white people dance? Classic....

He'd be headlining to answer your question....

HILARIOUS!! Que?tlove on the kit in the barber shop is awesome...

for the record, Mayer does have mad chops but for some reason has resigned himself to writing bullshit love songs for heartbroken tweens. At least use what you got when you're young save the bullshit somgwriting for your twilight years. Worked for Steven Tyler...

playing wonderland? 20,000. not playing wonderland? 1,000. i was amused by the chicks who showed up for the Trio show 3 years ago expecting to hear it. "what the fuck is this shit?" there are many sides to john mayer. i actually respect the guy because he sold out right away and then did what he wanted to.

Back in the NBC days I acquired a pair of tickets to see The Late Show in NYC. I was especially excited to see my musical hero, Mr. Paul Shaffer. Being on an extremely low budget, I skipped lunch and saved enough money to buy a Paul Shaffer t-shirt in the NBC store at Rockefeller. With no more money I decided to line up early and ended up in the “first twelve,†and as early arrivers we were escorted in first to take up the front two rows of the (deceptively small) soundstage. In the front row and proudly wearing my new shirt, I was happy to see the band come out early and jam for a half-hour or so. At one point Paul looked up from his duties, saw his face on my chest and he gave me a quick finger motion-salute.

The show was a blast, even though Kathy Lee Gifford was a disappointing guest, and as the show ended we all stood to file out of the theatre. Being in the front row made me the last to start towards the exits and as I stood waiting for the room to empty I heard a thin voice behind me saying, “excuse me, excuse me.†I turned around and there was Paul Shaffer trying to get my attention. “Hey, thanks for buying the shirt, I really appreciate it,†he says. We shook hands a made a little small talk. I asked for his autograph and he obliged, signing my DuMaurier pack. Soon a few others crowded around asking for autographs and he begged off, apologising and saying he had to leave the stage, union rules or some such thing.

I thought he was a pretty stand-up dude to go out of his way to acknowledge that one of his fans dropped some coin on his merch. Seemed like a genuinely nice Canadian guy, and it made me an even bigger fan.
