what new cd's have you picked up?

Christmas presents, boxing day sales, birthdays -- in one way or another most of us have picked up some new music over the past two weeks! What've you managed to get? (i guess this thread sorta pulls together several others)

I've gotten a few:

- Miles Davis "Sketches of Spain" - I've always intended to buy this one and I finally did. On first listen, sounds good, but I know it'll take several good sessions before I'm able to grasp the beauty of this work.

- Rinocerose "Music Kills Me" - I bought this one used at Cheapies, just taking a shot in the dark really. And I gotta say, I think this albums BLOWS! Its sort of electronic-y and sounds like music that would accompany a video game like grand theft auto. Actually I wonder if that was the whole point of the album. Either way, initial reaction: it stinks.

- Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" - Now this is a great album!! Catchy songs with interesting textures and weird sounds and a weird mix altogether. Weird indeed, but accessible enough that I've been humming "but you wonnn't let those roboooots defeat me" for 2 days non-stop.

That's it for me so far. Oh, and I've got "YOu Lost It In People" on the way in the mail. You bastardos got me convinced! I'm looking forward to it.

Here's my recent pick ups. Dunno if anyone knows them, if not that's too bad:

Sunroof "Cloudz" (awesome krautrock inspired drone from the UK, similar to Harmonia or Cluster)

Vibracathedral Orchestra "The Queen of Guess" (more modern psych/drone stuff from the UK, sounds a lot like early Amon Duul)

-both are on VHF Records, owned by an old school Dead fan from the US VHF

Writing On The Wall "The Power Of The Picts" (psych band from Scotland from 1968/69 that was heavily influenced by stuff like Arthur Brown and is pretty heavy, like Randy Holden era Blue Cheer)

Ian Matthews "Valley Hi" & "Some Days You Ear The Bear" 2 for 1 reissue on Water Records (former Fairport Cenvention / Matthews Southern Comfort country rock albums from the early 70s, produced by Michael Nesmith, who also released a number of excellent country albums then)

All are worth checking out.

Sunroof sounds cool, love Amon Duul. How is the Ian Matthews ? I confess, I am only familiar with his Fairport stuff, recently DLBed a cool comp of BBC sessions of theirs.

I'm pretty much drowning in music at this point [smile] My sweetpie gave me the new Lynyrd Skynyrd, a Harry Chapin comp, the Chieftains Nashville sessions (with Bela Fleck Earl Scruggs, Alison Krauss, Del McCourey and Gillian Welch, among others), and an awesome Bluegrass comp. My sisters gave me a Peter Gabriel Live DVD, and the 3rd season of Mr. Show which is Frickin' hilarious. I have also DLBed up a storm, with shows from Jason Mraz, Nick Cave, Fairport Convention and a couple of shows from Richard & Linda Thompson, as well as a 5 disc Bob Dylan set and a 8 disc Zeppelin, to go with my 17 disc Dylan set and 11 disc Zeppelin set [Wink] I also got recently the 2 disc remaster of Rock Of Ages by The Band, with Dylan guesting on the second Disc. Life is good.

I feel like we're swimming in CD's.

I couldn't possibly remember all of the shows and dates that we received, but I can remember a couple...

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Grateful Dead - 4 CD's of early dead.

The Police - amazing live show that shows what a trio is all about.

Let it Be:naked - holy crap, my favorite album has become PERFECT

The Ian Matthews is much more West Coast early 70s sounding. Very singer songwriter with a country bent. It's not groundbreaking, but it's nice, plus you can hear the arrangement of 7 Bridges Road that the Eagles use (Henley was/is a pal of IM and loved his version enough to use it with the Eagles). The second album is much less country sounding and has Jeff Baxter of Steely Dan, then the Doobie Brothers on pedal steel. This was recorded right around the time of the first Steely Dan album, when Matthews was asked to sing for them when their first singer quit. He initally said yes, until he found out Baxter was quitting and then bailed.

my 2 favourite songwriters, both amazing albums.

Both awesome albums, have you heard Blood Money by Waits, which came out at the same time as Alice? Perhaps Alice is superior by a hair, but I have a deep love of Blood Money, more of a dark jazz piece.

Something of a guilty pleasure of mine, 71 Dead doesn't get a lot of props but I have a bunch of cool shows from that year, including some huge sets from this run. I love this set, I'm a big Constanten fan and he is great in his guest appearance.

- Rinocerose "Music Kills Me"

Hey KevO - this is their second album...i bought it and sold it the same day...major dissapointment. Check out there first album though, it's awesome, kinda St. Germain-ish, some cool guitar work.

Also, GM - dissapointed in 'Transmissions'?? yer crazy! not only does it have their one big 'hit single' on it but the first track 'Turn it On' is wicked. Also notice track 11...hmm band name?

anyways, if you don't have 'Clouds Taste Metallic' 1995 then grab it, it's kinda where the talent to noise ratio started balancing out...

As for Trans Am, grab the first album(blue/white) cover...definitely the best one. or I could copy it for ya.

Hmmm what did I get...finally got Stephen Malkmus Pig Lib and Flaming Lips Soft Bulletin on CD...i can trash the mp3's now. Also got Mark Farina's full length debut, it's pretty good. Manitoba's second album, Up In Flames is currently kicking my ass, some really cool stuff going on there, he seems to have broken out of the boards of canada mold.

I haven't got that many new CDs lately, but I have recieved some new vinyl:

PROBOT - debut 7" (this is the metal project of Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters. He pays tribute to his fave 80s thrash and speed metal bands. Every track has a different singer. The 7" has songs featuring Cronos of Venom and Wino from the Obsessed)

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE - The Day Before The Sky Fell In America LP - Live set recorded on 9/10/2001 at Reckless Records in Chicago by Japan's craziest psychedelic jam band. If you've never heard them, imagine if Hawkwind were Japanese and lived in a commune.

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE - St. Captain Freak Out & The Magic Bamboo Request CD - new CD on a Finnish label. Their most Beefheartian album yet. This is some of the most out there modern psych, along with Sunburned Hand Of The Man, Circle and maybe No Neck Blues Band.
