  1. Paul Pena is awesome, I've had this on DVD for a few years now. Amazing film. Whats really cool is, he first had to teach himself Russian, so he could then learn Tuvan since there were no english > tuvan translations at the time, but there were Russian > Tuvan translations and being blind I'm sure that wasn't an easy task. Paul was also the first westerner to ever win the Tuvan throat singing contest, and as far as I know remains the only person to have done so, the style he created is very unique. Check it the film if you haven't its worth every minute in my opinion. [color:red][edit to add] While I was in Amsterdam for the cup in 97, I was lucky enough to come across some Tuvan throat singers playing on the street and caught it all on my camcorder.
  2. Tut Taylor Archive Reel #11 captures a little slice of circa early-1970's Nashville, when a unique combination of musical forces there were helping define "Newgrass"....a jam or recording session with John Hartford (banjo, vocals), Norman Blake (guitar, vocals), Tut Taylor (Dobro, mandolin), Vassar Clements (fiddle), & Sam Bush (bass!). While this might be considered an Aereo-Plain Band session, I tend to look at it more as a "typical" Nashville recording/jam session that Tut had the wisdom and foresight to record so that we could enjoy it today. Sam Bush was not a part of Hartford's Aereo-Plain band, nor are the tunes found here typically found on Aereo-Plain recordings. The sound on this one is splendid, making this reel a particular pleasure. Note: a number of these recordings (tracks 2, 4-7) were released by Tut on his "Flat Pickin' in the Kitchen" CD with Norman Blake. --Mitchell Wittenberg Tut Taylor Archive Reel #11 John Hartford Norman Blake Tut Taylor Vassar Clements Sam Bush Jam/Recording Session Nashville, TN ?? Circa Early-1970's 1. (Talking) 2. The Electric Telephone (Blake-vocal) 3. Pickin' Flat 4. Little Bessie (Blake-vocal) 5. Banks of the Ohio (Hartford-vocal) 6. Goodlettsville Express 7. Memories 8. Bad Blake Blues (x) 9. Bad Blake Blues The tape is a 7.5 inch per second stereo recording on side A with side B being blank. The reel was played on a modified Revox A77 reel-to-reel machine with a Reutelhuber custom designed and built tape head preamplifier incorporating 2003 era technology and components including all metal film resistors, polypropelene coupling capacitors, and low ESR electrolytic supply bypass capacitors. The resulting analog signal was digitized by a Mytek Digital 8X96 analog to digital converter using Steinberg Nuendo as the recording software and saved as a 24 bit 48 kHz wave file. Post processing and was done with Nuendo using the following Waves Plugins: X-Hum, Q10, C1 comp-gate and L3. The file was dithered down to a 16 bit/44.1kHz wave file
  3. While that does sound rather appetizing, especially for a saturday morning ice fishing trip, no, thats not quite what I mean. Again, I wish I could explain exactly what I mean, its a personal description I guess and perhaps in hindsight not one for posting as I can't really explain myself. But, its a whole feel or *choke* do I say it - vibe that I really enjoy. Regardless, it was meant in only the best way as saturday and sunday mornings are perhaps my favourite times to listen to music.
  4. I feel your pain, I had a 10+ ratio too. I don't care for auto-pruning system due to inactivity they use. I'm not looking for an invite though.
  5. Really good stuff Dave, thanks for sharing. I especially enjoyed 'Highway', it has a real "saturday morning" feel it. I wish I could explain what I mean by that. I couldn't get the other link to open but thats probally my computer since it's been acting up lately with certian websites.
  6. Since my ice fishin' partners are slackin gettin here, I may as post another sweet Lanois vid...great music for a chilly winter's morn
  7. Mother Superior and Daniel Lanois - Let it Go
  8. Checked in on youtube before goin ice fishing, here's what I found, could be more on there, but I gotta go...not sure if they are cell phone or camera footage, but they don't look half bad.
  9. I'm not a regular rum drinker, but if I'm going to drink rum, then Appleton's it is. Especially straight up. That stuff is so freakin' good. I wish all rums were made in the same fashion Appletons is. Anyway, my regular purchase would be Wiser's Reserve and my favourite wine is beer.
  10. Well after a re-read it seems the person was refering to the audio only. Being a DVD trading group I figured he meant video as well. So, you could be right on this Basher.
  11. Yep - it sure was and that is so far the only video I have found, hence my previous post. As for it turning up, on a couple of the DVD groups/sites I trade on some tapers were present. [edit to add] This is no way a 100% that, 1. The quality will be great and 2. it will be complete as security was rather tight, obviously.

    The sickness

I can confirm that it will work in an ice fishing hut as I was ice fishing last week on Lake Simcoe - although I substituted scotch for Wiser's Reserve (43%), beer and grain alcohol (XXX Rez special), but the result was the same. I was feeling a lot better within a hour, and it went rather well with a belly full of fresh perch.
  13. Only video (DVD) download I've found so far has been from the 'We Are One" concert at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC on the 18th. So I imagine the Dead will turn up soon.
  14. So far, for me: The Gourds - Haymaker
  15. Very cool & congratulations to him as well. A harp player friend of mine has his CD which I heard for the first time over christmas, excellent stuff, a lot of energy thats for sure.

    Buh Bye Bush

I amazed the inaguration is even happening after those those Canadian geese took down the airliner in NYC last week...figured Bush would have called it an act of terrorism and declared war on Canada.
  17. Happy birthday LR, hope its a great one.

  19. The whole label thing, as well my point went right over your head obviously. That wasn't a label, that was merely a list of the musics I listen to. Personally I thought that was apparent. Come on, are you really required purple font to grasp that? "philadelphia lawyer" I believe is the term my father used for folks that do what you did. Anyway, my point is lost if I have to break it down into explanations and I won't dilute it further.
  20. Since we're dissecting other's posts... As a person who pimarily listens to acoustic old-time pre-war folk/blues/ragtime/gospel/Appalachian/bluegrass music (how's that for a label?) its funny to read what people deem country music. It seems for some folks when a band takes a honky-tonk style shuffle, country influence or element, suddenly "they're a country band". Just like the label "jamband" so many bands are blanketed with, its not that cut & dry sorry to say. Hank Williams Sr. had a country band. RRE in my opinion, does not.
  21. I was going to try and answer that, but then I realized that most of the music I listen to now-a-days was created & recorded before the second world war.
  22. 300mb limit is the largest file you can upload is all (for a free account), if you have an alternative way to complie the entire album/show into a single uploadable file, then go for it. I just suggested zip or rar since they (to my knowledge) are the most common ways of doing so.
