  1. More like stone washed jeans and black jack daniels t-shirts.
  2. Been there lots of times. Used to live down the line ('the line' being highway 17) from there in Thessalon and Blind River and play hockey against Espanola High. The rumours of its stinkiness are entirely valid. If you're willing to drive into work a bit there's places to stay around the Espanola turnoff and Webbwood I think, but seriously there's nothing to speak of in that area. Blind River to Sudbury's a bit of a black hole, even by northern Ontario standards! I guess you'd get used to the smell soon enough though. Working in Nairn Centre eh? I used to love driving past there in the night and seeing the plant lit up amid the trees and darkness. Kinda had a Close Encounters of the Third Kind feel to it.
  3. The Guardian (UK) has been running a series on the "Top 1000 songs everyone should hear" which is organised around a bunch of different themes. I read the "Party" theme and it was pretty damn awesome particularly in terms of appealing to a wide audience but staying funky. here's the list (you can link to a lot of the songs on Spotify): http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/table/2009/mar/20/party-1000-songs-everyone-must-hear Hope it helps!
  4. one of my favorites over the last several years. first caught him opening for Lou Barlow and Folk Implosion in Australia in 2002 I think. There were like 10 people there for his set, but it was riveting. Been a convert ever since. Hold Time is quite good. Not his best but a good listen.
  5. I so wanted to play like this when I was little!
  6. As an aside, I wonder when the last time was that only one team from the Northeast conference made the playoffs? If the Habs continue to implode it looks like that'll be the case! THey turning into the new SouthLeast?
  7. How's this for some shitty luck? (could have put it in the Fantasy hockey thread since he's on my roster, but at this point it's a lost cause)
  8. You know what's funny about the phrase is that when I was young I thought it referred to the fact that whites had offered so much to natives (land treaties, etc.) and then just taken them back or ignored them at will. Critical reconstruction of the expression through ignorance I guess
  9. I have the good fortune of having a bar downstairs from my office. Some of us were there by 4:30 today. I held out 'til 5:15 like the good trooper I am, but by then it was a struggle to get a seat. Also nice to have the director of the institute try to buy you a pint a few minutes later
  10. Do it!!! I got hit by a car 2 days ago biking home from work. I was going pretty fast (it's basically a highway with a bike lane) and some woman turned off without checking the bike lane. I basically went headfirst over the bike, but only ended up with a bruised knee and shoulder and road rash on my hand. Lucky. Did a flip over the bike at pavement level, but had a solid bmx-style helmet on. At the same time, my workmate just had to leave work early today to prepare friends for turning their friend off life support at the hospital. He got hit head-first by a car on his bike with no helmet. My workmate's husband had bought the guy one a week earlier but he didn't wear it. Father of two. Shitty as hell. Moral of the story is that helmets save lives!
  11. I'd love to hit those spac shows, but no idea when I'll be back in north america. Here's hoping!
  12. if you haven't seen goran bregovic live before, don't miss it! Great lineup.

  14. Or do it cheap and a bit further (take cabs and still save money), but stay in a great place for getting food. http://www.casadelpopolo.com/contents/hotel
  15. I have the Kabuki pollock but generally speaking his is not my favorite work (though I appreciate the energy and creativity he must put into it).
  16. Looks like a great day in the park! Neil Young headlines Sat 27 June in Hyde Park We are delighted to confirm that Neil Young will headline Saturday 27 June at this year's Hard Rock Calling event in London. Tickets will go on general sale on Friday 13th March, 9am. Joining him as special guests at this prestigious festival are Fleet Foxes, Ben Harper & Relentless7, Seasick Steve and The Pretenders - with more artists to be announced soon. Undeniably one of the most influential artists in American music Neil Young is set to release his much-anticipated new album ‘Fork In The Road’ on 6 April on Warner Music. Chrissie Hynde commented on playing on the same bill as Neil Young at Hard Rock Calling: “We would play a garden shed to be on a bill with Neil Young but Hyde Park – summer – with ‘The Loner’? This is what makes a thousand hours on tour buses all worthwhile. This is why people get in bands.â€
  17. the term "new world order" is a slippery one. It's used to talk about US hegemony in the aftermath of the cold war, but also the establishment of the League of Nations and the Bretton Woods institutions after WWII. I think it tends to be bandied about as a part of fear-mongering on both sides without much analysis. If Brown (as I feel he is) is referring to a collective restructuring the systems of global governance (WB, IMF, WTO) to rein in a casino economy that has spun out of anyone's control then I'm all for it. I have a hard time he's using it in the Kissinger-esque sense of a NWO shaped and enforced by the US to back US interests abroad.
  18. Phish 2009-03-06 Divided Sky Been a long time since I've said that!
  19. 8-17-97 Set II Bathtub Gin (Great Went) 7-31-99 Fuji Fest, Japan 2001>Bowie 6-16-00 Osaka, Jim>Theme>DogFacedBoy (a totally underrated set in my opinion)
  20. Rotowire's comment: Mar 4 Kolzig, Jamie Heward and Andy Rogers are headed to Toronto in a deal for Richard Petiot, reports the St. Petersburg Times. Recommendation: Three injured guys for one who hasn't played in the NHL since 2005-2006? This may go down as one of the weirder trades of this year. Kolzig is out following surgery and won't be back until next year, if at all.
  21. shit, glebe has changed since I was paying 999 for a nice 3 bedroom on Powell Ave!
  22. Pascal Leclaire + 2nd round pick to Ottawa for Vermette. I like this deal!
  23. I use ufile.ca. Takes me about 20 minutes to do my taxes provided I have the right paperwork. Free if you're a broke-ass sucker like me.
