Rob Not Bob
Oooooh, good choice, Ms. Hux. "Woman In The Wall" has plentiful awesome lyrics ("Cry freedom for the woman in the wall, cry freedom, for she has no voice at all"). I was lucky enough to see the Beautiful South live at Porter Hall and I admit I freaked out and partied when they encored with the Bee Gees classic "You Should Be Dancing" (I have the Beautiful South version on MP3 but unfortunately can't find the single with it on it). "Ole Red Eyes Is Back" is the song with the lyrics that most often make me cry inside : They're only red from all the tears that I should've shed They're only red from all the women that I could've wed So when you look into these eyes I hope you realise They could never be blue .... Old Red he died And every single landlord in the district cried An empty bottle of whisky laying by his side A lazy little tear running from each eye They could never be blue Yeah, I'm a big pile of mush ... Ms.Huxtable
Oh Gawd Rob, I now have Old Red Eyes in my head. What a great song. I used to be in a band that covered a lot of Beautiful South. Great band with tons of great lyrics. Very morose thoughts set to almost bubble-gummy music. Weird and wonderful. "I love you from the bottom of my pencil case." MarcO
Frank's Wild Years Music & Lyrics: Tom Waits. Well Frank settled down in the Valley and he hung his wild years on a nail that he drove through his wife's forehead he sold used office furniture out there on San Fernanado Road and assumed a $30.000 loan at 15%1/4 and put a down payment on a little two bedroom place his wife was a spent piece of used jet trash made good bloody marys kept her mouth shut most of the time had a little Chihuahua named Carlos that had some kind of skin disease and was totally blind. They had a thoroughly modern kitchen self-cleaning oven (the whole bit) Frank drove a little sedan they were so happy One night Frank was on his way home from work, stopped at the liquor store, picked up a couple Mickey's Big Mouths drank 'em in the car on his way to the Shell station, he got a gallon of gas in a can, drove home, doused everything in the house, torched it, parked across the street, laughing, watching it burn, all Hallowen orange and chimney red then Frank put on a top forty station got on the Hollywood Freeway headed north Never could stand that dog. Rob Not Bob
I love the lyrical embellishments Waits gave "Frank's Wild Year" in the Big Time video : His wife ... well, she was a doll, she was a babe, she was a killer, she was a spent piece of used jet trash ... seriously, I loved Beverly, I loved her often ... She had a little chihuahua named Carlos that had some sort of skin disease and was totally blind ... what is this, is this impetaego, is this scabies ... can I get it too? I mean, I like dogs, I like dogs as much as the next guy, but let's face it, a dog is a *dog* Rob Not Bob
\/\/illy
Wow, tough one... "Let there be songs, to fill the air." - Guess... "For you've touched her perfect body with your mind." - Leonard Cohen, "Suzanne" "And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make." - Beatles, "The End" "You are the sun I am the moon You are the words I am the tune Play me" - Neil Diamond, "Play Me" "And the sun poured in like butterscotch And stuck to all my senses" - Joni Mitchell, "Chelsea Morning" "Sometimes I think it's a shame When I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain." "I can see her lookin' fast in her faded jeans; She's a hard lovin' woman, got me feelin' mean." - Gordon Lightfoot, "Sundown" shit, I could go on and on and on and on... maybe I will... "Tears and fears and feeling proud, to say "I love you" right out loud, dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way. But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say I've changed. Something's lost but something's gained in living every day." - Joni Mitchell, "Both Sides Now" I'll take it down a level and say: "Don't she look good Don't she look fine She needs to be picked Like fruit off the vine" - Masters of Reality, "Magical Spell" that's enough... there is no end to this... it's all about the lyrics... bradm
It's not the greatest I know, but I've got it on now and I like it: I think we're all bound for greatness It's not by chance we find our way Look around at all the things that shape us In the potter's hands we are as clay -- Smokestack, "Dreams We Dream" I also had this on before: I'm fallin' endlessly Been fallin' for years I can't hear anything else For the roar of the wind in my ears I'm on the border Caught between waking and dream But this spiral descends Just as dreadfully real as it seems If there's no net to catch me If there's no rescue plan I'll just scan the horizon And hope that you'll be There when I land There when I land There when I land -- RAQ, "There When I Land" Aloha, Brad

MarcO
Aaahhhh, Ms Hux, you have inspired me to make another contribution, from the late poet, Bon Scott, of AC/DC: Big Balls - (Dirty Deeds / 1976) I'm ever upper class high society God's gift to ballroom notoriety I always fill my ballroom The event is never small The social pages say I've got The biggest balls of all CHORUS: I've got big balls I've got big balls And they're such big balls Dirty big balls And he's got big balls And she's got big balls But we've got the biggest balls of them all And my balls are always bouncing My ballroom always full And everybody cums and cums again If your name is on the guest list No one can take you higher Everybody says I've got Great balls of fire CHORUS Some balls are held for charity And some for fancy dress But when they're held for pleasure They're the balls that I like best My balls are always bouncing To the left and to the right It's my belief that my big balls Should be held every night CHORUS And I'm just itching to tell you about them Oh we had such wonderful fun Seafood cocktail, crabs, crayfish... \/\/illy
How about: "Long you'll live and high you'll fly; and smiles you'll give, and tears you'll cry. But all you touch and all you see; is all your life will ever be." -Pink Floyd Predictable or what... Here's a funny story. You know that little thing you get to put under your grad picture in your high school year book? I requested: "When I get to the bottom I go back to the top of the slide Where I stop and I turn and I go for a ride Till I get to the bottom and I see you again" Beatles, "Helter Skelter" I was told that I could not use that because Charles Manson had killed people because of that song. I was super pissed off! So, I asked for this: "You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to So that when they turn their backs on you You'll get the chance to put the knife in" It was also denied so I boycotted the yearbook and refused to let them print my picture that year. What a joke.

\/\/illy
In fact, since I'm at work and I hate it today, let me post this whole song. A brilliant piece of writing I must say: You've got to be crazy, you gotta have a real need You gotta sleep on your toes when you're on the street You've got to be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed Then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight You've got to strike when the moment is right without thinking After a while you can work on points for style Like the club tie, and the firm handshake A sudden look in the eye, and an easy smile You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to So that when they turn their backs on you You'll get the chance to put the knife in You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder You know it's gonna get harder, harder and harder as you get older Yeah and in the end you'll pack up, fly down south Hide your head in the sand Just another sad old man, all alone and dying of cancer And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around So have a good drown as you go down all alone, dragged down by the stone Gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this place Deaf, dumb, and blind--you just keep on pretending That everyone's expendable, and no one has a real friend And it sems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner Everything's done under the sun And you believe at heart everyone's a killer Who was born in a house full of pain Who was trained not to spit in the fan Who was told what to do by the man Who was broken by trained personnel Who was fitted with collar and chain Who was given a pat on the back Who was breaking away from the pack Who was only a stranger at home Who was ground down in the end Who was found dead on the phone Who was dragged down by the stone Pink Floyd, "Dogs"
MattyC
One of my favorites is this Dylan tongue twister. Half of the people can be part right all of the time, Some of the people can be all right part of the time. But all of the people can't be right all of the time. I think Abraham Lincoln said that. "I'll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours," I said that.
Jaimoe
One of the most beautiful songs of all time. Love the melody as much as the sparce lyrics. From the late great Nick Drake ( 1972 ): Pink Moon I saw it written and I saw it said- pink moon is on its way. None of you stand so tall, pink moon gonna get you all and it's a pink moon, yeah, pink moon. Pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon. Pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon. I saw it written and I saw it said- pink moon is on its way. None of you stand so tall, pink moon gonna get you all and it's a pink moon, yeah, pink moon. Kitari
The genre may be out of place on this board, but the lyrics really touch my hill-billy soul! I said I wanna touch the earth I wanna break it in my hands I wanna grow something wild and unruly I wanna sleep on the hard ground In the comfort of your arms On a pillow of blue bonnets In a blanket made of stars Oh it sounds good to me I said CHORUS Cowboy take me away Fly this girl as high as you can Into the wild blue Set me free oh I pray Closer to heaven above and Closer to you closer to you I wanna walk and not run I wanna skip and not fall I wanna look at the horizon And not see a building standing tall I wanna be the only one For miles and miles Except for maybe you And your simple smile Oh it sounds good to me I said It sounds so good to me - Dixie Chicks, Cowboy Take Me Away

arcane
Too many to list, and most of them lose a lot of their meaning and nuance when taken out of context, heard without the singer's inflection, and deprived of the colour imparted by the music. As well, my favourites tend to depend on what's going on at any given time. Right now, I'm fond of Pink Floyd's "Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit, I" (from "Learning to Fly"). It fits the theme of my avatar, in a downstream kinda way.
