thatpatguy
so.. I listen to a podcast called Basscast (http://basscast.libsyn.com/) which is all about bass playing and people who love the bass..anyway.. this past podcast they went through their 20 greatest rock basslines ever and they are:01 - Another One Bites The Dust - Queen02 - Roundabout - Yes03 - Money - Pink Floyd04 - Super Freak Part I - Rick James05 - Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin) - Sly & The Family Stone06 - Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell07 - Dazed And Confused - Led Zepplin08 - Badge - Cream09 - Higher Ground - The Red Hot Chili Peppers10 - Taxman - The Beatles11 - Free Will - Rush12 - Brick House - The Commodores13 - Thela Hun Ginjeet - King Crimson14 - NIB - Black Sabbath15 - Good Times - Chic16 - Bernadette - The Four Tops17 - London Calling - The Clash18 - Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream19 - Jeremy - Pearl Jam20 - Ramble On - Led Zepplinpretty good list if you ask me.. though I don't know if I'd have Another One Bites The Dust as number 1.. it's hard for me to rank that higher than the bassline that inspired it, Good Times by Chic.Anyway.. your thoughts? do you agree? disagree? think some are ranked too high? some not high enough? bradm
"How Many More Times" by Led Zeppelin should be on there somewhere, as should "Groove Is In The Heart" by Dee-Lite (or whatever track inspired it).Aloha,Brad
StoneMtn
What about the theme to Barney Miller? I'm totally not kidding. That is some of the most kickass bass-playing I can think of, and the song has been covered by various little bands over time.
bradm
Hmmm...you're right, and I'd add the theme to "Night Court" in there as well.Aloha,Brad

bradm
timouse's Zappa quote in his signature makes me think of one that's not so much a greatest bassline per se, but a great bass performance: "Rubber Shirt" by Zappa (and O'Hearn and Bozzio). Zappa took a recording of Patrick O'Hearn playing bass (it was either a written piece of improvised; I can't remember which) and synced it up with a recorded Terry Bozzio drum solo (in 11/4). The recordings, however, were originally done separately, without being intended to be joined. The result is...interesting.Aloha,Brad
AD
as far as simple yet awesome basslines, the ending of The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. If they didn't use it it could've been one of the best hard-rock / heavy metal riffs ever.ad
kookycanooky
Why bother trying to make a list of something like this...Seems impossible. continuing with StoneMtn's addition, i nominate Spinal tap's "Rock and Roll creation", when he's stuck in the orb, he's playin' some mad lines! bradm
I think "Day Tripper" by The Beatles should be on the list, especially for the way it gets synced up with and doubles the guitar line.Aloha,Brad
Dr_Evil_Mouse
First thing I thought of that wasn't on the list was The Other One, especially the one from 19-08-89 (Greek Theatre) , where Phil does that run twice before the tune fully kicks in - feels downright gratuitous.
