Wedding Speech.. need help!

I've been asked to say a few words at a friend's wedding in a few weeks. A poem or song lyrics or something, about love and committment or whatever I want really. And I have NO IDEA what to say! Anyone got any suggestions for me?

I've done a few speeches including my own wedding speech and from what I could tell, they were well received. Go with your heart... and don't forget to add a few funny personal stories too. I don't recommend doing impersonal generic stuff. Be original.

that e.e. cummings had some slick:

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond

any experience, your eyes have their silence:

in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,

or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me

though i have closed myself as fingers,

you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens

(touching skilfully,mysteriously) her first rose

or if your wish be to close me,i and

my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,

as when the heart of this flower imagines

the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals

the power of your intense fragility: whose texture

compels me with the color of its countries,

rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes

and opens; only something in me understands

the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)

nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

probably best to leave any shared trips to the bordello out of the speech

I've spoken at a handful of weddings, and I've found that the best course of action to take is to be as specific as possible when talking about the bride and/or groom, whether you do it in describing them or telling anecdotes. The ol' "Matt's been a great friend and he and Heather are really in love, so here's to them" routine is fine, but things that could be said about any couple on the face of the planet aren't all that memorable.

I was the best (wo)man at my friend Don's wedding and I just mentioned a few of the nice things he's done and how Erica was making a really good choice marrying him. I talked about how he was my "seeing eye Don" when I lost my glasses at CTMF and how he helped me do everything from cutting my vegetables to driving me everywhere when I broke my arm, he was my right hand man. I thought it was clever, appropriate and nice. You just gotta vouch for your friend, right?

My mom's opinion is that this one is too sexual. lol!

I should've mentioned that I need to find a quote or reading because this is for the CEREMONY, not the reception. So it won't be story telling time.

The wedding is next Saturday and I still don't know what I'm gonna read! Maybe something by Kahlil Gibran, but that's just so obvious.

Talk all about love man.....there are other people (ie. the minister, if there is one) to talk about 'under the eyes of god' or 'the resposibility of marriage', so take it upon yourself to talk about how much these two cats love each other. Beatles quotes work, Ben Harper has a few quotable songs, and there's a ton more out there. Or, make something up yourself!

shit, now I feel like a sap....
