Then in the 90s we learned it was a horrible word and it should never be spoken. Now it is back again. In the southern US it is still a common term. I remember the first Bonnaroo we went to the local newspaper headline read something like: "Senate to Debate Ethics of Execution for Retarded". I was shocked to see it in bold printed letters.
