Intrawest resorts are starting to institute new helmet rules:

The operator of the Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort wants helmets to become standard at its resorts in North America and has launched a campaign to persuade all skiers and snowboarders to wear the protective gear.

The changes include the Mount Tremblant resort in Quebec, where actress Natasha Richardson, wife of actor Liam Neeson, had a fall in March. She later died of a blood clot.

Starting this season, Intrawest will make helmets mandatory for all children and teens enrolled in ski and snowboard programs and will also include helmets in all rental packages.

Helmets will also be mandatory for on-duty Intrawest employees and for anyone using the freestyle terrain parks. The company also plans to upgrade its website and ads to feature helmet-wearing skiers and boarders.

Intrawest operates the Panorama resort in B.C., the Mount Tremblant resort in Quebec, and others in Colorado, Vermont and New Jersey. The new rules will be phased in at all the company's resorts over the next two seasons.

The Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort will host the alpine ski events and the sliding events for the 2010 Winter Olympics in February.

That's a bad way to think about it for a number of reasons - scientists have done tests that prove that falling on flats at a lower speed can be just as damaging to the head as falling at speed on a steeper decline. The key to that is when falling on a flat the energy of your fall gets absorbed by the body, rather than dispersed along the decline as you fall. (Heck, that study is probably cited somewhere earlier in this thread).
