Another random thought from last night. Never in my wildest imagination did I think I'd ever bear witness to a live version of Lick It Up > Won't Get Fooled Again > Lick It Up. Whoa.

It was also kind of random when Paul Stanley started playing Stairway To Heaven. That got a bigger reaction than many of the KISS songs.

also, I left at around 9:25 to catch a bus. On the way out, I held up my ticket and heard "HOW MUCH?".

I turned around and there was an 11 year old (or younger) with his brother and dad. Well, I could have said "for you kid? $20", but instead I just gave it to him and said "enjoy yourself". He said "FOR FREE!???" The look on his face was priceless. Mind you, I bet he sold it 30 seconds later.

Nice move. He'll remember it the rest of his life, I reckon.

I shouldn't be mixing up genres, of course, and they certainly didn't put on a half-assed show, kudos to them for that, so maybe I was wrong to diss them. Guess I'm spoiled by the bluesiness/funkiness of so many bands at the fest.

I was curious what the setlist for a Les Claypool show might look like and found this recent one. So yeah, looks like he is dipping into the Primus catalogue just a little bit.

07/04/09 (Sat) Rothbury Festival @ Double JJ Ranch - Rothbury, MI

Set 1: Rumble of the Diesel, Riddles Are Abound Tonight, Amanitas, David Makalaster I > Southbound Pachyderm > David Makalster I, Red State Girl, Precipitation, Drums, Drum and Whamola Jam, Booneville Stomp, Duchess and the Proverbial Mind Spread, D's Diner

Two things:

1) KISS was not great IMO. Tempo seemed off in all of the songs I saw and the volume was quite low- BUT The Skydiggers were fantastic and I had a blast there.

2) How on earth is Les Claypool going to fit in Saturday nights show?: His tour dates...

7/16 Ottawa, ON Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest

7/17 Atlantic City, NJ House Of Blues

7/18 Buffalo, NY Town Ballroom

7/19 Hampton Beach, NH Hampton Beach Casino

I cruised down on my bike to scope things out and potentially sneak in. Ended up scoring an extra off someone for $20 right by the ticket outlet and I was on my way in.

I'm with you Ollie, I thought the KISS show was epic through and through. I ate up the entire spectacle -- lights, massive screens, the elevating stages, the fireworks, pyrotechnics, fake blood, Paul Stanley floating over the crowd, Paul Stanley repeatedly yelling "OTTAWAAA! OTTAWAAA!", the ROCK! The crowd was great as well. I'd say averaged out the crowd had a good 6 beers into it and a good buzz going on. Loved all the painted faces. It exceeded my expectations by FAR!

Looking forward to tonight.. I'll be at Sharon Jones but sad to think that I'll be missing Les Claypool.

geezuz. tonight is retarded at 9:30.

I could stick around at any of those stages. Alan Parsons Proj on the Subway stage would be fantastic. But Les at the Hard ROck cafe stage? Get out! Then you have Sharon on the best stage.... Black Sheep.

Styx would be cool to check for the cheezy numbers that every knows and of course a reprise of Gowan's Criminal Mind.

I was able to take some photos at the stage and when I was done, I stayed until we HAD to leave. I found myself looking up at Les (his bass fingers were only a couple of feet from my face) who was playing at the far left of the stage, outside of the lighting while the vibe player was going apeshit. Well, Les was also going apeshit in his method of providing bass guitar.

He was doing some seriously insane shit, but without taking the spotlight. Fingers flying, thumbs slappin'.... he is amazing.
